Amsterdam – September 19 2014 — Menlo Logistics (Menlo), the global logistics subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), has illustrated its ongoing support of academic advancement in the field of supply chain management and logistics services by once more sponsoring the Best Thesis Award for graduates of the Supply Chain Management Masters degree programme at Tilburg University in the Netherlands.
The award, which is designed to inspire students to excel in the logistics arena, was presented earlier this month to Koen Gerrits for his thesis on ‘Improving Transportation Performance Using Supply Chain Collaboration: A Case Study of Transportation in the Plant Network of FrieslandCampina’.
FrieslandCampina* is a prominent supplier of dairy produce in the Netherlands. Tilburg University’s Dr. A.A.C.J. van Oijen, who headed the panel judging the Best Thesis, praised Koen’s research work for its “thorough analysis but also for its practical recommendations”.
Commenting on Menlo’s support of the award, Gert Jan van Sluis, the company’s European HR Director said, “The judges were impressed by Koen’s exploration of the impact of cooperation on the performance of the transport function and how key such collaboration can be for increasing efficiencies in the future.”
Continued van Sluis, “At Menlo we are constantly looking for process improvements across all aspects of the supply chain. Both support for this sort of research and the encouragement of higher education standards in the logistics sector complement Menlo’s business philosophy. We are delighted to sponsor Tilburg University’s Best Thesis Award.”
Menlo actively advocates for professional training in the logistics field throughout the world. In addition to sponsoring the Tilburg scholarship, the company also supports academic research and education at two major universities in the USA, and underwrites a scholarship and work internship program for students pursuing logistics degrees at Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore.
The Tilburg Best Thesis Award also recognised two runners-up; second place was awarded to Inga Gjebinschi for her thesis on the effect of lean logistics on business performance and third place went to Marlou Thomas for her work on sales forecasting at BIP, the Dutch candy and novelty toy producer.
*Royal FrieslandCampina provides millions of consumers all over the world with dairy products containing valuable nutrients. With annual revenue of 11.4 billion euro, FrieslandCampina is one of the world’s five largest dairy companies.
