The 2015 best thesis award was presented at Tilburg University during the graduation ceremony of the new “Masters in Supply Chain Management”. The first prize went to Maik van Vugt for his paper about ‘Reducing Supply Chain Costs by Optimizing the Inbound Logistics’. In welcoming guests, Menlo’s Bianco said, “In a way Menlo’s development in Europe has come full circle. We started operations here, not far away in Eersel some twenty years ago and just as the Netherlands and the Benelux region as a whole have risen to prominence as Europe’s premier logistics hub, so Menlo has followed a similar path. Today, we lay the foundation of our seventeenth facility in Europe at a location which is ideal for us to continue increasing the scope of our logistics capabilities.”

The logistics center is located at the Acht industrial park in Eindhoven adjacent to the A2/N2 Eindhoven ring road, which offers direct access to Belgium and Germany, as well as Amsterdam to the north. When completed, it will be one of the largest build-to-suit projects in the region. “This transaction reflects the strong demand for Class-A facilities in Tilburg, Eindhoven and Venlo and further strengthens Prologis’ presence in this market,” said Bram Verhoeven, country manager, Prologis Benelux. “We are pleased to further our global partnership with Menlo in the development of strategic industrial real estate properties that provide high-value logistics services for local, regional and global businesses.”

Commenting on the development of the new investment, Menlo’s managing director in Europe, Tony Gunn, said, “As a multi-client, multi-discipline facility, Eindhoven will become our flagship location for the wide range of logistics services we provide to customers across the seven primary industries we service in Europe. These include high-tech, healthcare, retail and consumer, manufacturing and e-commerce. It will also provide jobs for over 200 people and is an ideal match for the needs of our strategic growth plans in the Benelux, as well as Europe as a whole.”

Menlo Logistics Wins National Business Success Award

SAN FRANCISCO and AMSTERDAM — August 3, 2015 — Menlo Logistics (Menlo), the global logistics and supply chain management unit of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), has won the 2015 National Business Success Award for Logistics, presented by the Dutch Nationale Business Succes Award Instituut in Rotterdam.

This accolade is part of the largest annual business awards in the Netherlands, which are also the only awards with their own weekly television program featuring the winners. An award nomination designates a company as one attaining the highest professional standards, and an award winner is distinguished even further in terms of business success.

Menlo secured this year’s award in the Logistics Service Providers category, with the nomination committee commenting, “We see Menlo Logistics as a stable, progressive company that is expected to achieve many more successes in its market sector in the future.”

Menlo impressed the judging committee with the breadth of its services, including storage/warehousing, value-added logistics services, transport management, product logistics, 4PL and supply chain engineering. In particular, the company excelled in its innovative approach to continuous improvement. This stems from the embracing and adoption of the Lean philosophy that underpins Menlo’s corporate culture and that has the full commitment of all Menlo employees.

Customers benefit significantly from this inclusive, “whole value chain” approach to identifying improvements and savings. Menlo continually asks the question “Why do we do it this way?” thereby determining which act in any supply chain process fails to add value.

Many customers have benefited from Menlo’s Lean expertise, including global corporations such as New Era Cap, Physio-Control and Fox Head, as well as small to midsize manufacturers and retailers seeking to expand their market reach.

In accepting the award, Tony Gunn, managing director of Menlo in Europe, said, “We are delighted to receive this award and thank the Instituut for the honour. This award acknowledges the dedication of our staff throughout Europe. Menlo prides itself on being a proactive partner for its customers. We think and work with them to tackle the challenges presented by their dynamic and ever-changing marketplaces. We have formulated clear values and carry out our activities in a way that always assumes our responsibility towards the environment and the community in which we operate.”

Diebold Recognizes Menlo Logistics with 2014 Platinum Award for Supplier Excellence

Amsterdam – June 08 2015 – Menlo Logistics, the $1.7 billion supply chain management subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE:CNW) announced today that it has been honored by Diebold, Incorporated, with the 2014 Platinum Award for Supplier Excellence.

Diebold is a global leader in providing innovative financial self-service, security, software and service solutions to financial, commercial, retail and other markets. Menlo was one of only two Diebold suppliers — and the only logistics company — to be awarded the Platinum designation, which is Diebold’s highest accolade for superior performance delivered by their suppliers. More than 100 suppliers attended the awards ceremony.

Menlo has been a global supply chain partner of Diebold since 2007 and had previously won the company’s Silver Award six times. Menlo won the Platinum Award on the strength of its integrated logistics solutions for Diebold, which incorporate strategic 4PL supply chain engineering and network optimization services with functional, day-to-day third party logistics (3PL) services.

These services include transportation procurement and management through three global transportation “control tower” centers in Auburn Hills, Michigan, Budapest, Hungary, and Shanghai, China, as well as traditional 3PL services such as warehouse design, management and fulfillment. The solutions include a Diebold-dedicated warehouse operated by Menlo in the U.S. that supports assembly, staging and distribution of finished products as well as component materials to Diebold plants globally.

“Menlo has consistently provided Diebold with outstanding global logistics solutions that meet our strategic and tactical supply chain operation needs,” said Linda Parcher, Diebold vice president and chief supply chain officer. “During the past eight years, through Menlo’s leadership in Lean continuous improvement methods, we have realized substantial improvements in our supply chain operating systems and process innovations that have elevated supply chain performance. Diebold awarding Menlo with a Platinum Award for Supplier Excellence is reflective of the value Menlo has provided during our partnership.

“True collaboration and commitment to continuous improvement are about recognizing and accepting the need for change . . . and change is hard,” said Robert L. Bianco Jr., Menlo’s president. “What I’m most proud of is that over the eight years we’ve had the privilege of being a Diebold supplier, we still sit down regularly and examine what we do and why, and we have the fortitude to ask the hard questions and not settle for the status quo. Our team is still innovating, still applying Lean methods to find new opportunities to create value and reduce costs.”

In other news, Menlo Logistics is also planning to certify its Lean processes at an in-plant truck assembly operation in Rudrapur in Uttarakhand state — which began operations in 2014 — for another major automotive company.

Menlo manages all aspects of logistics and storage for the chassis line, engine line, cowl line and post-body operations, and this includes frames, engines, axles, leaf springs, bumpers, fuel tanks, canopies, spare parts and fasteners.

“We have a deep understanding of the complex supply chain requirements of our automotive customers in India, and we are investing in building our capabilities and solutions across the country in this dynamic industry,” said Desmond Chan, Managing Director, South Asia, Menlo Logistics.

Menlo Logistics’ India operations have grown to 18 sites in 2015 from five in 2007, and the employee base has increased to 700 full-time and part-time staff. The company’s gross revenue in India has increased by five times in 2014 when compared to 2007.

“We have also increased our presence in other vertical markets such as health care, heavy engineering and high-tech — with strong footprints in the automotive sector,” said Dhingra.

Menlo Logistics opened a regional office in Pune in Maharashtra state, which is India’s leading automotive and IT hub. The head office is in New Delhi.

Menlo Secures ISO 13485 Status for Specialist Handling of Medical Devices

Amsterdam – March 2nd 2015  – As further evidence of its proficiency in the medical device sector, Menlo Logistics, (Menlo), the global logistics and supply chain management unit of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) has achieved ISO 13485: 2003 for its Eersel (Neth.) facility.

The International Standard sets specifications for a quality management system where an organization demonstrates its ability to manufacture or control and handle inventory management of medical devices and related logistics services while complying with applicable international regulations governing the supply and distribution of medical devices, and consistently meet customer requirements.

Menlo’s Eersel site in the south of the Netherlands provides logistics and supply chain management services to two divisions of the Getinge group, which is a leading global provider of equipment and systems to the healthcare and life sciences industries. ArjoHuntleigh, the division specializing in medical equipment for those with reduced mobility and its corporate sibling Maquet, also a producing of high-end medical devices, both benefit from Menlo’s professional abilities dedicated to the specific supply chain needs of sophisticated healthcare medical supplies.

Commenting on the attainment of the ISO 13485 standard Menlo’s Senior Director of Business Development, Arthur van Gerven said, “Both quality assurance and regulatory compliance are essential for a logistics company offering supply chain services to the medical device sector. Therefore, we are pleased with the ISO accolade.  Menlo, however, believes success in this sector also involves a sharing of similar cultures with our business partners.  In the case of our Eersel customers this includes a mutual dedication to Lean continuous improvement practices as well as a commitment to quality and compliance.”

Menlo Presents Guidance for Specialist Supply Chain Management in the Medical Device Sector

Amsterdam – December 5th 2014

Menlo Logistics, (Menlo), the global logistics and supply chain management unit of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) is emphasising the specialised nature of the Medical Device (Medtech) supply chain in Europe.  Menlo is particularly keen to outline the particular skills and capabilities required by a 3PL to manage the unique requirements of medical device manufacturers and the hospitals and health systems that make up the majority of consumers.

A detailed review of the sector, including consultation with a number of leading global suppliers in the sector, has lead Menlo to conclude that five key attributes of a 3PL/supply chain service provider are essential to deliver an effective service.

Speaking at the Life Sciences Supply Chain Summit in Amsterdam yesterday, Arthur van Gerven, Menlo’s Senior Director of Business Development in Europe said, “We are finding that the introduction of a centralised warehousing and distribution model, replacing national level networks, is being increasingly employed in Europe by medical device manufacturers; the process is most often assisted by a 3PL with global capabilities.”

During a panel session which included leading suppliers supporting his view, van Gerven continued, “However, once the ‘big picture’ re-engineering of a complex supply chain has been completed, the incumbent 3PL must have the necessary skills and capabilities to continue the job within the re-aligned infrastructure.”

The five key attributes that Menlo believes are essential to fulfil customer expectations in the medical device sector are outlined in the diagram below.

Menlo is at pains to stress that a commonality of culture is the dominant factor in the mix. “You need the right culture, a shared mindset between people in both organisations to implement a structured and continuous improvement process,” said van Gerven at the Summit.  Menlo’s own solution to this need is to employ the Lean concept, applying the well-established waste-reduction technique to logistics.  “While this shared culture is the most difficult of the five to achieve, it is the most important, as it is also the driver of quality,” he emphasised.  The other three elements, while critical, are easier for a 3PL to put in place.

In addition, van Gerven’s Amsterdam comments drew on the contents of a soon to be published White Paper by Menlo entitled ‘Rationalising the Medical Device Supply Chain’*.  The five key 3PL attributes are described in detail within the White Paper along with results of other research into the European Medical Device market, estimated to be worth €100 billion.  The sector employs 575,000 people, working for around 23,000 companies, 95% of which are SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises).

The aim of the White Paper is to summarise the current challenges to producers, suppliers and consumers in optimising their supply chains and contains examples of how the players, including their logistics service providers, are responding in order to design supply networks and work processes that are more refined, efficient, effective and environmentally friendly.

*Pre-publication advanced copies of the White Paper are available for review by the media on request
