Evergreen Marine Obtains Double Certification for its Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory

In order to implement the company’s environmental protection policy and carbon reduction goals, Evergreen Marine Corp. has completed a systematic inspection and calculation of greenhouse gas emission inventories for its business operations, including its global operating fleet, office buildings and container terminals in Taiwan. The methodology and results of the survey were recently certified by BSI (British Standards Institution) in compliance with ISO14064-1:2018 and the GHG Protocol in late July.

In view of the impact caused by climate change and the international community’s concerns on sustainability issues, governments around the world have proposed carbon reduction targets. The FSC (Financial Supervisory Commission) in Taiwan also launched its “Sustainable Development Roadmap for Listed Companies” in March this year, requiring companies to disclose their greenhouse gas emission inventories in stages.  Listed companies such as Evergreen Marine, with capital of more than NTD 10 billion must complete the survey of its greenhouse gas emission sources and inventories next year (2023), and obtain third-party verification by 2024. In addition, surveys and verification of its subsidiaries must be completed in 2025 and 2027, respectively.

To comply with relevant regulations and meet various information needs about greenhouse gas emission of customers and other stakeholders, Evergreen Marine established a task force responsible for the inspection of its greenhouse gas inventory and the design of a carbon footprint platform. Following a thorough inspection and verification of its greenhouse gas emissions for all business operations, the company simultaneously obtained the two international environmental protection standard certificates of ISO14064-1:2018 and GHG Protocol in July, ahead of the schedules required by the competent authorities.

Evergreen regards these measures as part of its responsibility as a “Guardian of the Green Earth”. The company is using advanced technologies to build a fleet of eco-friendly vessels, which comply with the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) regulations and enable best fuel efficiency, and continues to replace old ships with new ones. At present, 80% of ships in its operating fleet are less than ten years old. This young fleet allows the carrier to operate with maximum efficiency in providing transportation service with lower energy consumption.

Contributing to this efficiency, Evergreen’s investment in the 7th Container Center in Kaohsiung is expected to come to fruition with operations beginning in the 2nd half of next year.  The terminal will gradually replace current operations in the separated transit hubs of the fourth and fifth container centers located in different parts of the port. Consolidation of operations at the brand new transit hub will effectively reduce the shunting of transshipments between the two terminals and eliminate the carbon emissions arising from such transportation.

In order to fulfill its commitment to green shipping and sustainable operation, Evergreen has set proactive carbon reduction targets based on its levels of carbon emissions in 2008, including a 50% reduction of CO2 emission rate (g/TEU-km) by 2030; a 70% reduction in the emission rate by 2050, and a 50% reduction in overall emission volumes by 2050.

In looking to the future, Evergreen will continue to implement various environmental protection measures across its operations, periodically report its emission inventory, and monitor the progress of its carbon reduction efforts, with an aim to reach carbon neutral operation by 2050. If there are further advances in shipping technology and clean energy development in the future, Evergreen will also be committed to achieving its vision of realizing zero carbon emissions.

EVER GIVEN Successfully Refloated, Normal Transits of Suez Canal Resume

March 29, 2021 – Evergreen Line is pleased to confirm that EVER GIVEN has been successfully refloated within the Suez Canal at approximately 15:00 March 29 local time. In order for the Canal to resume normal operation, the vessel is leaving the grounding site with assistance of tugboats.

The chartered vessel will be repositioned to the Great Bitter Lake in the Canal for an inspection of its seaworthiness. The outcome of that inspection will determine whether the ship can resume its scheduled service. Once the inspection is finalized, decisions will be made regarding arrangements for cargo currently on board.

We are most grateful to the Suez Canal Authority and all the concerned parties for their assistance and support through this difficult and unfortunate situation. We would also like to express our deepest appreciation to the crew who remain steadfast in their posts as well as the salvage experts and dredging team for their professionalism and relentless efforts over the past 6 days toward securing this outcome.

Evergreen will coordinate with the shipowner to deal with subsequent matters after the shipowner and other concerned parties complete investigation reports into the incident.

EVER GIVEN is a 20,000 TEU-class container ship, currently leased by Evergreen Marine Corp. under a time charter agreement. The ship is deployed on a Far East-Europe service route.

Ever Given Situation Report

As of 07:00 Egypt time Thursday 25th March Evergreen can confirm the following:

After 48 hours of proactive efforts to re-float Ever Given, the time chartered vessel’s grounding situation has not been resolved.

The shipowner confirms that the crew, ship and cargo are all safe, and no marine pollution has materialized. There had been no black out resulting in loss of power prior to the ship’s grounding.

The shipowner has appointed two maritime professional rescue teams from the Netherlands (Smit Salvage) and Japan (Nippon Salvage) to attend the ship. These teams will be working with the Captain and the Suez Canal Authority to design a more effective plan for refloating the vessel as soon as possible.

Evergreen Line will continue to coordinate with the shipowner and Suez Canal Authority to deal with the situation with the utmost urgency, ensuring the resumption of the voyage as soon as possible and to mitigate the effects of the incident.

As the vessel is chartered, the responsibility for the expense incurred in the recovery operation; third party liability and the cost of repair (if any) is the owners.

A further up-date on the situation will be made as material information becomes available.

Evergreen joins the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative

August 3, 2020 – Evergreen Marine Corporation (Taiwan) Ltd. has become a signatory to the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative (SRTI) in order to share its aged vessels’ green recycling policy. The move is part of Evergreen’s avowed commitment to plan a completely sustainable life cycle for its vessels from design, construction, operation and ultimately to decommissioning.

The SRTI, hosted by the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, is an online platform via which members report information on their ship recycling policies and activities against a set of predefined disclosure criteria. In the interest of transparency, Evergreen and other participating shipowners can share their approach to this critical component of environmental and socially responsible ship operations. Cargo owners and financial stakeholders, in turn will have access to this information in order to make their own informed decisions.

Evergreen F-type vessel ‘Ever Faith’

In announcing its decision to join SRTI, Evergreen said “We have had a long-standing commitment to ‘Clean Oceans’. Embodied in this goal is a mission to ensure responsible and sustainable operations wherever they touch the environment, whether at sea or on land, and to care for the people we employ and the communities we serve.”

When planning its current fleet renewal strategy therefore, Evergreen not only requires strict recycling standards for those vessels being disposed of, but also incorporates state-of-the-art design into its newbuildings so as to minimize the impact of container shipping operations both on marine life, on port communities and on humanity worldwide.

In this regard Evergreen invests in measures that go beyond environmental regulations, for instance, the new 12,000-TEU class F-type vessels, of which the 1st in the series is already in service network since March of this year, are equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) reactor system. Such technology ensures that the vessels meet MARPOL nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission Tier III standards, which is above the current Tier II requirements. In addition, Evergreen voluntarily ensure that all newbuildings and the ships already in service, no matter on which service trade they will be deployed, will be provided an Inventory of Hazardous Materials Part 1 (IHM Part 1) for Class approval and SoC for certification.

Such consideration of the environmental impact of a vessel’s operation throughout its life-cycle is the driving force behind the latest SRTI move. “When a vessel is decommissioned and recycling is planned, not only can valuable and reusable resources be recovered but potentially dangerous waste and pollutants must be processed properly.” Evergreen goes on to say. “Recycling operations with the highest standards of safety available must be utilized. “We are therefore pleased to share our recycling policies by joining SRTI and helping lead a growing industry initiative to demand more responsible ship recycling in the future.”

In a statement welcoming Evergreen, Andrew Stephens, Executive Director of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative said, “Evergreen Marine joins a growing SRTI family that includes like-minded shipowners who are holding themselves to account before key stakeholders, including clients, investors and the wider public. This includes an increasingly diverse range of stakeholders engaging on the topics of data and transparency, circularity, and the role of financial stakeholders in sustainable and responsible ship recycling in the absence of global regulation.”

True to both its name and the corporate philosophy established by group founder and chairman Dr. Y.F. Chang, Evergreen recognizes its ecological obligations and will continue to maintain the best possible care in sustaining an ‘ever green’ global environment.

Evergreen Opens Four New Offices in Latin America

January 14, 2019 – In view of the growth potential in Latin American trade, Evergreen Line is continuing to establish its own offices at main service locations in the region. The move will strengthen the effectiveness of the line’s operations, improve its capability to react to market opportunities, optimize the efficiency of its network routing and enhance its competitiveness in the area.

Evergreen Line has just opened its own agency in Colombia following the establishments of other offices in Peru, Chile and Mexico over the past few months. In setting up these offices Evergreen confirms its continued commitment to serving the trade and economy of Latin American west coast region. The dedicated personnel at these locations will have responsibility for local marketing and sales, customer service, shipping documentation, ground transport and port operations.

In order to expand the container transport options for its customers in Far East – Latin American west coast trade, Evergreen has teamed up with partners to add two more trans-pacific services; these are in addition to the two currently operated by Evergreen. As a result the range of direct ports of call on offer via, the now four weekly services, has been expanded to Pusan (South Korea), Qingdao and Xiamen (China) and, in Latin America, Ensenada (Mexico) and Lirquen (Chile).

Although Latin America has an abundance of natural resources, a variety of common consumer goods are imported. The pattern of economic trade with East Asia is consequently complementary. The latter has a fully developed manufacturing industry base and, at the same time a requirement for the mineral resources, as well as the fruits, seafood and other agricultural products in which Latin America is so rich. The opposing seasonality of southern and northern hemispheres enhances this symbiosis and extends further the choices for Asian consumers.

Among the Latin American countries, Chile, with the longest coastline of any country in the world stretching to more than 4,300 kilometres, has an extraordinary range of climate patterns which endows it with a vast array of natural produce from both the land and the ocean. In response to customer demand for exporting such commodities, Evergreen has adjusted its service routings, greatly cutting down the transit time for Chilean exports to East Asia and therefore assisting local fresh produce exporters to take advantage of business opportunities.

Evergreen Line is committed to providing efficient shipping transportation throughout its global service network. In addition to an on-going fleet renewal program, the line has also expanded its regional operations in recent years. As of today, Evergreen Line has established its own agency offices in more than 30 countries around the world in the belief that this commitment will provide superior transport services for its customers.

“Full Steam Ahead” into the future180901 Evergreen Group Celebrates 50th Anniversary (Image 1)

Taipei, Taiwan (01 September, 2018) – Evergreen Group celebrates its 50th Anniversary today at the Chang Yung-Fa Foundation, home of the charity set-up by Evergreen Group Founder and Chairman Dr. Y.F. Chang. In addition to senior executives and employees of the Group’s businesses, the event was also attended by public officials, customers and business agents from both the shipping and airline industries as well as representatives of supply chain partners from more than fifty countries. The celebration commenced with a performance by the choir of the Yihsing branch of Jiahsing Elementary School from Hsinchu County. The choir was a gold medal winner at the 31st Franz Schubert Choir Competition in Vienna this June and their sublime singing reflected Evergreen’s passion and enthusiasm to connect the world and enrich people’s lives.

Evergreen’s gratitude for its past success and expectations for a more prosperous future are fully demonstrated within the design of the event banner. The green waves cross the 50th anniversary insignia and the rhythmic lines show the magnificent energy of the ocean, symbolizing Evergreen’s continuous breakthroughs and innovative achievements through its development. The compass represents the corporate philosophy of Evergreen Group Founder Dr. Chang, guiding the group’s employees to adhere to the company’s values and to conquer obstacles along the way, sailing full steam ahead into the future. The pulsating dots, meanwhile signify the vitality of each business entity under Evergreen’s banner.

Mr. K.H. Chang of Evergreen International Corp. delivered the welcome address. He thanked business partners and all employees for working hand in hand with Evergreen Group for the past 50 years and expressed his gratitude to the general public for the support and encouragement, which helped Evergreen to achieve the scale of its business today.  He encouraged all Evergreen staff to remain true to Dr. Chang’s values, keep pace with the times, and work together toward achieving the next milestone – a centennial anniversary. He also looked forward to getting together with all the guests once again to celebrate Evergreen’s 60th birthday in ten years’ time.

Taiwanese Minister of Transportation and Communications, Mr. Wu Hong-Mo, noted in his remarks that Evergreen Group builds a comprehensive shipping network and international flight routes, providing quality transportation service to facilitate world trade and serve the general public. In addition to its core businesses, Evergreen Group is also devoted to charitable activities and giving back to society.  He wishes Evergreen Group a prosperous development and long-lasting future.

Evergreen Group evolved from its operation in marine transportation. Evergreen Group Founder and Chairman Dr. Y.F. Chang, established Evergreen Marine Corporation on the 1st of September 1968. In the early years, the company encountered numerous hurdles, such as the fire that ravaged Ever Island, a lack of lending support from financial institutions and competitive monopoly of freight conferences. All these obstacles were overcome under Dr. Chang’s leadership and with the ‘Evergreen Spirit’ embodied in all his employees.

In 1972, Evergreen launched Taiwan’s first Far East-Middle East liner service, helping local shippers transport their cargoes to the fast-developing Middle East region. In 1979, it opened the Far East to Europe full container service as an independent carrier, breaking the monopoly of the Far Eastern Freight Conference. In 1984, Evergreen launched the unprecedented two-way, round-the-world container services. This turned a new page in the history of the global marine transportation, establishing Evergreen as the world’s largest container shipping line in 1985. Today, Evergreen remains one of the leading brands in the global shipping industry.

After building a solid foundation in shipping industry, Dr. Chang sought to expand Evergreen’s transportation service into the airline industry. On the 20th anniversary of Evergreen Marine, he announced his plan to invest and build the first privately owned airline in Taiwan, EVA Air. Dr. Chang once said, “Although it will not be possible for EVA Air to grow to be the biggest airline in the world due to the restrictions of air traffic rights, EVA has to be the safest and best airline in the world, following the example of Evergreen Marine in the shipping industry.”

Dr. Chang made huge investments in the establishments of EVA Air, including training centres, maintenance facilities and software systems, to make sure that its flight safety and service quality met the most stringent standards.  In spite of numerous difficulties, including adverse smearing campaigns, the fledgling airline successfully took to the sky in 1991.  In just a few years, EVA expanded route network to many cities across Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. The pace of EVA’s service expansion had been rarely seen among newly-established airlines at that time.

The airline owed much of its successful growth to Evergreen Group’s experience in marine transportation. At an early stage of EVA’s development, Evergreen Marine transferred many of its skilled employees to provide the professional talents needed to build the airline.  EVA was able to obtain many of its air traffic rights thanks to Evergreen Marine’s business relations and economic contribution to the relevant countries.  In the succeeding years, EVA has always been at the forefront of international airlines and has won much prestigious recognition for flight safety and service quality.

In addition to marine and air transportation, Evergreen Group has developed into a global conglomerate across sea, land and air, expanding its business scope into aviation technologies, international hotel chains and steel production. Within each and every one of Evergreen Group’s business entities, the astute management of their executive team keeps their business moving forward.  The dedication remains to continue efforts to provide better service for customers and the community at large.  Looking to the future, Evergreen Group will continue to embrace Dr. Chang’s corporate philosophy of generating profit, caring for employees and giving back to society as it heads into the next 50 years.

New Joint Asia – Australia Service Beefs Up Evergreen’s Offering

June 14, 2018 – Evergreen is expanding its container transport choices for customers between Asia and Australia by teaming up with Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and APL to provi180614 Ever Blissde a new weekly Central & South China-Australia Express (CAE) service. Five classic Panamax ships with capacities averaging 4,600 TEU will be deployed on the new service, two will be operated by Evergreen Line and the remaining three by HMM and APL. The first sailing is scheduled around mid-August, with regular port calls at Ningbo, Shanghai, Yantian, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

CAE will augment the line’s two current weekly services (NEAX and CAT) that call at ports in China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Australia. The expansion in service offerings is in response to the increasing trade demand on the route. Australia’s economy is reported to have entered stable growth. The rising population, mainly from robust immigration, has not only promoted the expansion of the consumer and housing markets, but also the development of public infrastructure – all stimulating cargo demand on this trade.

In addition to strengthening the current Asia-Australia network coverage, the expanded capacity also provides shippers with more reliable service. Evergreen Line has long cultivated the Australian shipping market, establishing ‘Evergreen Shipping Agency (Australia) Pty. Ltd.’ in 2002. From its base of three offices located at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, the line will continue to assist shippers to enhance their market competitiveness in the region.

Evergreen Opens New office in Cambodia

April 03, 2018 – Evergreen Shipping Services (Cambodia) Company Limited was established this month in response to both customer demand for increased service in the country and the potential for trade growth boosted by an average rise in GDP of 7% during the past several years.

The opening of this office will continue the line’s cultivation of the shipping market in Cambodia, matching transportation demands with convenient shipping services, assisting cargo owners to seize business opportunities and enhance their market competitiveness.

After joining the economic confederation of states in Southeast Asia (ASEAN) in 1999, Cambodia’s open economy policy have attracted foreign investment, and has enabled the successful development of its manufacturing industry. This has resulted in significant growth in both import and export volumes.

Evergreen currently delivers cargoes to/from Cambodia by common feeder, via trans-shipment over the Vietnamese port of Cai Mep and Singapore, where long haul vessels connect into Evergreen’s global network across 115 countries.

To further strengthen the development of local business, Evergreen will utilize two containerships of 1,618 teu to launch a new weekly China-Vietnam-Thailand (CVT) service. The first sailing of the service will be from Shekou on April 25 and call at Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh, Sihanoukville, Laem Chabang, Haiphong and back to Shekou.  Evergreen looks forward to providing more efficient and reliable transportation service for the future development of the Cambodian economy.

Evergreen Launches New Electronic Documentation Function in Partnership with Bolero International

Evergreen Line introduces paperless Bill of Lading (B/L) and dispatch documentation via its ShipmentLink digital portal, enhancing connectivity for exporters and importers with banks, insurers, regulators, customs and port authorities. Evergreen is the first container carrier to integrate with Bolero’s proven electronic Bill of Lading (eBL) solution.

March 01, 2018 – Evergreen, in line with its avowed mission to deliver the highest standards of customer service through continual improvement, has introduced two new Intelligent Services – the intelligent i-B/L (Bill of Lading) and i-Dispatch, a solution that delivers documents associated with such transactions.

These new services, provided in partnership with Bolero International, will lower shippers’ costs while making data transfer more accurate, efficient, reliable and secure. Accessed via the line’s established ShipmentLink portal, the ability to achieve paperless data exchange among all parties concerned in a shipment will significantly simplify supply chain linkages.

Bolero’s eBL technology has been integrated into Evergreen’s ShipmentLink customer portal, delivering the benefits of almost 20 years’ experience of proven, secure and accepted electronic transfer of Bills of Lading (B/Ls) in the shipping community.

The advantages of this new integration for Evergreen’s container shippers start with the rapid issuance and transmission of the i-B/L. This is helpful in all cases but particularly for short-sea shipments when a paper Bill of Lading can sometimes arrive later than the vessel, making it difficult for importers to pick up cargo on a timely basis.

However the advantages of i-B/L do not end there. The paperless environment allows reviews and alterations to be undertaken online and speeds up cash-flow by avoiding the delays associated with traditional documents. Carriers can release goods and banks can release payment to shippers far more quickly.

With Bolero’s assistance, the new i-Dispatch function facilitates electronic exchange of the wide range of documentation associated with shipments in addition to the B/L, including packing lists, commercial invoices, certificates of origin and other customs-related credentials, licenses and inspection reports. This avoids the dangers of loss, fraudulent copying and errors associated with paper documents and where necessary, transmission can be in an encrypted form.

Evergreen is pleased therefore to add i-B/L and i-Dispatch to its existing suite of electronic functions, including shipment booking and tracking, for the use of customers via Evergreen ShipmentLink. Partnership with Bolero, introducing new digital functionality, marks the expansion of the established online portal into high-volume container trades.

Ian Kerr, CEO of Bolero, said: “We are delighted that Evergreen, such a major global container carrier, is partnering with us to help transform an industry on which world trade depends. Bolero’s eBL platform has already been proven in bulk cargo trades and initial container-based transactions by corporates such as Cargill, BHP Billiton and Reliance Industries, but now with Evergreen we are taking a very significant next-step in the digitization of world trade by putting our technology at the disposal of a wider community of container shippers and NVOCCs.”

Evergreen Line remains committed to bringing technology to the aid of its customers wherever and whenever possible. Whether in the realm of digitalization, environmental sustainability or efficiencies in transport operations, the line will continue to be at the forefront of innovation and the extension of service capability.
