“K” Line to Provide Relief for Victims of the Typhoon Hagibis

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. announced that it will provide a monetary donation in the amount of 5 million yen toward relief efforts in the areas damaged by the Typhoon Hagibis last week. In addition, the “K” Line Group is now organizing fund-raising activities among officers and employees.

We would like to express our deepest sympathy to those in the disaster areas and sincerely wish for the earliest recovery from this most unfortunate event.

Edoardo Podestá takes the helm of Dachser Air & Sea Logistics

Dachser appoints Edoardo Podestá as the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the Air & Sea Logistics business field

The long-standing Managing Director of the Asia Pacific region now heads Dachser’s global air and sea freight business.

Kempten, October 10, 2019. Dachser appoints Edoardo Podestá as the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the Air & Sea Logistics business field. Podestá replaces Jochen Müller in this position.

Dachser and the current COO Air & Sea Logistics, Jochen Müller, have mutually agreed not to extend his contract when it expires in 2020. Jochen Müller will stop working for Dachser with immediate effect.

In recent years, Jochen Müller was responsible for developing the air and sea freight business into a network company with operations worldwide, thereby putting in place the foundations for globally integrated supply chain solutions for our customers. It is thanks to his commitment that the structures to support the future expansion of the air and sea freight business could be further cemented. Dachser is grateful to Jochen Müller for all his hard work over the years and for the mutual trust upon which it was based, and wishes him every success in his personal and professional life in the future.

The job of heading up the global air and sea freight business is going to Edoardo Podestá, a seasoned Dachser manager. The 57-year-old Italian joined Dachser back in 2003 as part of the management team for the Züst Ambrosetti Far East Ltd. joint venture after Dachser had taken full control. In recognition of his successful expansion of the air and sea freight business in Asia, he was appointed Managing Director of the Asia Pacific business unit in 2014.

NEW YORK, 8 OCTOBER, 2019:  The American Club has released its latest loss prevention guidance, Bunkering – A Compendium, together with website access to a comprehensive approach to loss prevention initiatives demanded by new regulations and generally by supplying guidance on operations and management.

The Compendium is intended to give guidance not only in respect of issues arising from the new MARPOL regulations coming into effect on January 1, 2020, but also in regard to best practice generally in the conduct of bunkering operations.

GEODIS and Arkema test the future border system intended for Brexit

GEODIS, a global expert in transport and logistics, partnered Arkema, the French leader in chemicals, to take part in the dry runs organized by French Customs to test the future customs arrangements that will be implemented in the event of a “no-deal” Brexit. GEODIS is now ready to support its customers for customs and transport operations involving the United Kingdom, whatever the Brexit scenario.

In the context of the restoration of a border between the United Kingdom and the European Union, the French customs authorities have developed a computerized system known as the “smart border” which automates the border crossing for freight vehicles. Since September, French Customs have been organizing a series of full-scale simulations with all the players concerned – including transporters, loaders, customs representatives and customs clearance software providers – to test the new system under the most realistic conditions possible.

GEODIS and Arkema jointly participated in operational trials of the “smart border” on 24 September. The two companies coordinated to organize a shipment of goods from the Arkema plant in La Chambre, south eastern France, to the United Kingdom under the conditions of a post-Brexit export operation. GEODIS and Arkema had to evaluate the advance transmission of customs documents, the coordination of logistics, the matching of customs data with that of the vehicle, and the actual crossing of the border. All of these tests were successfully achieved, enabling the shipment to cross the border safely and smoothly.

Young Freight Forwarders Honoured at FIATA World Congress

For over twenty years both FIATA and TT Club, the specialist insurer for the freight and logistics industry, have championed the development of young professionals in freight forwarding.  Now in its twenty-first year, the Young International Freight Forwarder of the Year (YIFFY) Award has been supported by both organisations in order to promote this mission.  The winner of this year’s award, announced on Friday at the FIATA World Congress in Cape Town, is Mrs Evgeniya Khokhlova, who represents the Russian association (FAR) and is a Specialist in Project Logistics for SVH-Freight.

Each year, four regional finalists are selected from multiple entrants located across the world.  They are invited to attend the FIATA World Congress, providing each finalist with invaluable learning and networking opportunities.

The candidates are required to submit a 6,000 word dissertation outlining the pertinent details of an import and export shipment from their native country. The four finalists then present their dissertations in person to a panel of judges at the Congress where the overall winner is selected.

TT Club is proud to have sponsored the award throughout its history and Mike Yarwood, TT Club’s Senior Loss Prevention Executive and Chairman of the Award Steering Committee, together with FIATA President, Babar Badat presented the award to Evgeniya at the Cape Town Congress.  As the winner Evgeniya will receive two, one week training sessions with TT Club at one of its regional headquarters in London, New Jersey or Hong Kong.

The FIATA Congress, organised in partnership with the South African Association of Freight Forwarders, welcomed over 1,000 participants from around the world.  Attendees at the Gala Dinner also offered their congratulations to the other three regional finalists:

Commenting on the outstanding quality of the work presented to the judges this year, Yarwood said, “I would like to congratulate all four finalists for their polished presentations and especially, of course our winner. The current global trade environment is particularly challenging and the forwarder’s role in adapting to the regulatory, political and economic pressures on themselves and their customers is consequently more crucial than ever. In these circumstances the training and professional advancement of our young professionals must be paramount.”

FIATA’s President Badat said, “The prestige of the YIFFY Award has long been recognised.  FIATA values highly the operational excellence that the award represents. “K” Line – Commencing Joint Research and Analysis and Market Conditions with artificial intelligence (AI)

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha., Ltd. (hereinafter, “K” Line) has reached an agreement with Hiroshima University, the National Institute of Maritime, Port and Aviation Technology (hereinafter, “MPAT”) and Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter, “Marubeni”) to jointly work on research and analysis on maritime logistics and shipping market conditions using AI (hereinafter “The Research”).

In recent years, it has become possible to use comprehensive, chronologically ordered ship movement and static data, such as position (coordinate information), speed, direction, port of call and drafts, for ships with over 300 gross tonnage traveling internationally. This data is being applied in a variety of ways. Additionally, AI is making remarkable progress with improving machine learning and deep learning technology, and there is much research and practical application of this technology that is being used to find patterns hidden in big data and to make predictions. The purpose of The Research is to estimate maritime logistics by combining data and technology, and to explore the possibility of developing predictive models with high accuracy.

The shipping market is one of the more difficult economic indicators to predict because it fluctuates greatly under the influence of various market and social conditions, and sometimes market sentiment as well. The method developed by The Research is expected to enable more accurate and transparent business decisions.
