Dachser UK

DACHSER UK goes daily to Iberia

14 October 2015

Dachser Ltd in the UK has begun a daily direct road trailer service to and from San Sebastian (Spain) in co-operation with Azkar Dachser Group, the Dachser SE BUCK_Northampton_Y0C9502_2Group’s subsidiary organisation in Iberia.

Azkar Dachser Group’s San Sebastian hub acts as one of its key gateways for import and export freight distribution to and from the Iberian peninsula, connecting with a comprehensive network of over 69 locations throughout Spain and Portugal.

Dachser acquired the privately-owned Iberian logistics provider in early 2013, following a close working partnership with the company since 2008, during which time freight volumes grew significantly and an increasingly wide portfolio of customers across various industry sectors was served. That growth continues today, as the Iberian and European networks of the combined organisation become ever more closely integrated.

The new direct service from and to the UK will further improve lead times, and will provide a focal point for on-going business development between the two organisations.

“Our customers know very well that the promise of fast transit times means little without consistent reliability ‘, points out Nick Lowe, Managing Director of Dachser UK. ‘Our direct and daily co-operation with Azkar Dachser Group is an important development for us providing a seamless extension to our well-established, high-quality European network services and representing a strategic approach to the incredibly important Iberian market.’

‘Our export customers expect a high quality service throughout the whole of Europe, and the new daily direct connection between Iberia and the UK complements our extensive range of reliable logistics operations’, said Alfonso Hostaled, General Manager for Azkar Dachser Group’s Central & North region.

The logistics provider is also welcoming 28 students who are taking advantage of the dual educational system to prepare for their career. The family company is currently training 1,341 logisticians at 78 locations throughout Germany.

Logistics is a peoplebusiness—how logistics performs always depends on the performance of the people who provide it. That is why training has an especially high priority at Dachser. In Germany, the vocational training rate has been constant at ten percent for years. Throughout Germany, the family-owned company from Kempten in the Allgäu region is preparing its trainees for a career in logistics in seven vocational professions. It offers training in business, IT, technical, and industrial professions. “The combination of theory and practice prepares our trainees and students for a demanding career in logistics,” says Martina Szautner, Corporate Director Corporate Human Resources. “We need people, who in addition to their professional qualifications, thrive within a team and develop their profile. Looking beyond the horizon of their own responsibilities is an absolute necessity for a position in a company that operates internationally.”

Martina Szautner is also very pleased about the 58 professional drivers who are now beginning their training at Dachser. Last year, there were 45. “Our commitment to training professional drivers through Dachser Service und Ausbildungs GmbH is being well received,” says the head of HR. In September, Dachser Service und Ausbildungs GmbH is starting five continuing education modules as well as basic and partial qualifications in collaboration with DEKRA.

The logistics provider is also training future logisticians outside of Germany through the Dachser Education Program along the lines of the dual education system. The company is training 58 trainees as Dachser forwarding and logistics specialists in Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Poland, and Hungary.

DACHSER opens two new branch offices in Greater Paris

DA_WB_Quelle Dachser

Kempten, August 25, 2015. International logistics provider DACHSER is repositioning itself in Greater Paris with two new locations in Wissous and Pantin. Paris Wissous, located near Paris-Orly International Airport, serves as a transshipment point for industrial goods. The new Pantin location, northeast of the French capital, is in charge of supply to downtown Paris.

“With our new Wissous and Pantin locations, we are integrating Greater Paris into our seamless network in an ideal way, and at the same time putting ourselves in the most strategic position for city logistics,” explains Michael Schilling, COO Road Logistics at DACHSER.  DACHSER already has a presence in the region through branch offices in Cergy-Pontoise, Villeparisis, and Vemars at the edge of the city. In addition, there are three warehouses and a branch office of the Air & Sea Logistics Business Field at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Gateway to European markets

A 7,000-square-meter, 70-dock transit terminal and 1,500 square meters of office space have been available in Paris Wissous since June. With approximately 100 employees, the terminal is located near several long-distance transit axes that head south or are near the Paris Ring highway. Approximately 170 tons of goods enter the DACHSER network every day from Wissous. In the medium term, the volume is expected to rise to 280 tons, with a strong focus on goods export. The new branch office is replacing the former Vitry-sur-Seine location, which had reached the limits of its capacity.

In Greater Paris equipped for the future

The new branch office in Pantin lies in direct proximity to the city’s “boulevard périphérique” freeway. The company now has a 5,800-square-meter, 39-dock transit terminal there with 542 square meters of office space. The Pantin site is taking over supply to all of downtown Paris, and replaces the former Paris-based Aulnay/Unic and Sentier locations. Pantin employs a staff of 45 workers.

DACHSER operates in France with a total of 72 locations and has approximately 3,000 employees. In 2014, revenues from DACHSER France totaled approximately EUR 793 million.

DACHSER UK has been granted full Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status

Northampton, 5th August 2015

On 21st July 2015, Dachser Ltd was granted AEO(F) status by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). The full certification (Type F) recognises that the company’s organisation and processes are secure, and its customs controls and procedures are efficient and compliant.

The introduction of the Authorised Economic Operator is a key element in the EU security concept which facilitates trade whilst making supply chains more secure and controlled from origin right through to final destination. AEO is also part of a world-wide initiative to secure international supply chains and benefits from mutual recognition with other countries such as the USA.

Nick Lowe, Managing Director, DACHSER UK

Nick Lowe, Managing Director, DACHSER

In order to obtain AEO(F) status, a series of stringent audits are conducted to demonstrate a company’s ability to handle customs goods competently, safely and securely. These include compliance with customs requirements, reliability, financial solvency and fulfilment of the relevant legal and safety regulations.

Authorised Economic Operators enjoy a number of privileges and the AEO certificate also leads to indirect benefits due to improvements in safety and security standards within the company.

Benefits of AEO status include:

  • greater access to customs simplifications
  • priority clearance
  • reduced administration
  • higher transparency through internal control systems: traceability of flows of goods, increased transport security, fewer delays in despatch; improved security between supply chain partners.

Nick Lowe, Dachser’s UK Managing Director, is very enthusiastic about the company’s AEO accreditation. ‘Our successful completion of the very stringent audit process by HM Revenue & Customs is a great achievement and very motivational for the whole team. For our customers, our AEO(F) status provides a clear endorsement of our credentials as secure and reliable logistics partner in respect of international trade.’

Dachser awarded for outstanding reliability

Kempten, July 7, 2015. Lufthansa Cargo honored Dachser Air & Sea Logistics in the Europe and Africa regions with the 2014 Lufthansa Cargo Quality Award for Europe & Africa. The award recognizes the logistics provider’s superior input quality. Thus, Dachser has the highest level of reliability for bookings out of all other shipping and logistics companies participating in the competition.

150707 Dachser_LH_Cargo_Award

Katja Wichmann, Head of Global Account Management Europe/Africa at Lufthansa Cargo, and Thomas Krüger, Regional Manager North Central Europe at Dachser Air & Sea Logistics.

To Lufthansa Cargo, one key criterion for the award is the provider’s “‘flown as planned’ performance.” This metric specifically includes booking quality, minimal no-show rates, and meeting the Cargo 2000 RCS indicator (“ready for carriage” shipment received from forwarder). Lufthansa Cargo measured these criteria each month, and is now recognizing the three partners with the best performance records. In the shippers and logistics providers category—for which at least 200 air waybills had to be flown with Lufthansa Cargo in the Europe/Africa sector—Dachser Air & Sea Logistics reached the peak position. Germany is excluded from this, because Lufthansa Cargo bestows a separate award there.

“At Dachser, the issue of quality gets top priority,” states Thomas Krüger, Regional Manager North Central Europe at Dachser Air & Sea Logistics. “This award proves that we have done our homework.” On behalf of all employees, Krüger accepted the award at a ceremony that was part of the Lufthansa Cargo Forum for Europe & Africa 2014.

Dachser grows with global supply chains

Consolidated revenue increases by 5.2% to EUR 5.3 billion

A 4.4% rise in shipments to 73.7 million

Tonnage grows by 5.1% to 35.4 million tons

Kempten, Munich. April 14, 2015. In fiscal year 2014, Dachser generated 5.2% in additional revenue. Including revenue from corporate holdings, the two Business Fields* Road Logistics and Air & Sea Logistics grew by 5.0% and 8.0% respectively. “A lively spring was followed by an extraordinarily strong fall,” says Bernhard Simon, CEO of Dachser, in summarizing the year’s events. “The trend toward outsourcing internationally complex logistics tasks in particular has made a contribution to the organic growth.”

Simon considers integrated supply chain solutions for multinational customers to be one of the major sources of growth in upcoming years: “Our efficient European groupage network, customized contract logistics solutions in Europe, Asia, and the U.S., as well as our own air and sea freight network allow us to create complete supply chains.” According to Simon, growth through expansion of networks is finished except for enhancements here and there. Dachser will now be able to leverage its interlinked logistics services to achieve particularly sustainable growth.

Business development in detail

In the Dachser European Logistics (EL) Business Line within Road Logistics, in addition to the traditionally strong performance of the ‘EL Germany’ Business Unit, the consistent export strategy of the European subsidiaries has paid off. For example, the ‘EL North Central Europe,’ ‘EL France & Maghreb,’ and ‘EL Iberia’ Business Units made significant contributions to the 5.3% growth in revenue. Shipping figures increased by 5.5%; tonnage rose by 6.3%.

The second Business Line of Road Logistics, Dachser Food Logistics (3.7% growth in revenue), profited from such factors as strong use of capacity in consumer goods contract logistics. In addition, rising demand for cross-border food shipments in the European Food Network had a positive effect.

Finally, the Air & Sea Logistics Business Field also continued its global growth trend in 2014. The positive trend in sea freight was the decisive factor in the successful fiscal year.

Focus on agility and process orientation

Dachser started off 2015 by changing its legal form to an SE (Societas Europaea). “By taking this action, we have created maximum legal security for our future growth as an international company and at the same time secured our independence as a 100% family-owned company,” explains Simon. The new management structure, which was created in the process, has eight operational Business Units under the globally active Executive Board. This reinforces our decentralized business strategy, which gives us the ability to make decisions flexibly and quickly. “In this way,” continues Simon, “we can ensure proximity to our customers, and write the next chapter in our success story.”

* About the terms “Business Field,” “Business Line” and “Business Unit”:

Along with the change in legal form to a Societas Europaea (SE), Dachser has reorganized its management structure, changing the designations in the process. The company provides transport logistics, warehousing, and customized services within two fundamental Business Fields: Dachser Air & Sea Logistics and Dachser Road Logistics. Road Logistics is further divided into two Business Lines: Dachser European Logistics (industrial goods) and Dachser Food Logistics. With the Business Lines, Dachser emphasizes the three pillars on which the company’s business model is based.

At the organizational level, Dachser has created eight operational Business Units: In addition to Dachser Food Logistics, there are the regional units European Logistics (EL) Germany, EL North Central Europe, EL France & Maghreb, and EL Iberia, as well as Air & Sea Logistics (ASL) EMEA, ASL Americas, and ASL Asia Pacific.

Dachser changes legal form to SE

Kempten, February 16, 2015

Dachser, one of Europe’s leading logistics providers, has changed its legal form to a Societas Europaea (SE) and has opened the way for the future. The family-owned company is not planning an IPO.

Image Trailer 2007

Dachser is now a Societas Europaea (SE). Dachser GmbH & Co. KG has transferred its major business fields Road Logistics (including the European Logistics and Food Logistics Business Lines) and Air & Sea Logistics to the 100%-owned subsidiary Dachser SE. Dachser GmbH & Co. KG itself will operate as a holding company called Dachser Group SE & Co. KG.

By providing a modern holding structure, the legal form of the SE offers the family-owned company an ideal framework in which to combine its corporate structure with subsidiaries in Germany and abroad. In the future, Dachser’s name in the German marketplace will be Dachser SE, but the various names of the country organizations outside of Germany will remain unchanged.

This legal conversion is not tied to any change in the shareholder structure. There will not be an IPO, nor will outside investors acquire any holdings. Dachser CEO Bernhard Simon said, “We have altered our legal form to fit our global growth strategy and have therefore opened the way for the future. Dachser is a successful family-owned company and will remain so in the future.”

The existing Administrative Board will also continue to operate as a supervisory board at Dachser SE with oversight functions.

Organizational and management structure: Customer proximity and decentralized decision-making process

Within Dachser Group SE & Co. KG, the Executive Board and the corporate positions reporting to it will carry out central management and control functions at the global group-wide level. The Executive Board includes Bernhard Simon (CEO), Michael Schilling (COO Road Logistics), who also serves as deputy head of the Executive Board, Thomas Reuter (COO Air & Sea Logistics), and Burkhard Eling (CFO).

Eight operating divisions, which are led by Managing Directors, will function at the level below the Board within Dachser SE. Aside from Dachser Food Logistics, which Alfred Miller will continue to manage, these units are divided up by region: Germany, North Central Europe, France & Maghreb, and Iberia in the Road Logistics business field, and EMEA, Americas, and Asia Pacific in the Air & Sea Logistics business field. “The eight operating divisions will reinforce our decentralized business strategy, giving us the ability to be even quicker and more flexible in our decision-making. And once again this will bring us closer to our customers,” said Simon.
