Dachser at transport logistic

Kempten, March 18, 2015. Dachser will be exhibiting at transport logistic in Munich from May 5 to 8. In Hall B6, Booth 101/202, the family-owned company will be presenting the recent expansion of its international network, custom-tailored multi-channel solutions as well as new service offerings and trend-setting IT services.

At its two-level, 800-square-meter booth, Dachser will be showing its entire range of logistics solutions. The logistics provider has placed the subject of integration at the center of its trade fair presence: Dachser is integrating air and sea freight with overland transport and warehouse activities across all stages of the value chain.

Dachser is showing its entire service portfolio at its booth – from network expansions in all business lines, custom-tailored solutions and services, and integrated IT systems. “For us, the trade fair is an ideal opportunity to present Dachser as an integrated logistics provider with expertise in international supply chains,” explains Bernhard Simon, Dachser’s CEO.

Traditionally, the trade fair crew consists of international Dachser employees who relocate their regular workstation to the trade fair in Munich for a week, so there will be plenty of expert contact persons at the booth. This year, 92 employees from ten countries will be representing the company in Hall B6, Booth 101/202.

Dachser changes legal form to SE

Kempten, February 16, 2015

Dachser, one of Europe’s leading logistics providers, has changed its legal form to a Societas Europaea (SE) and has opened the way for the future. The family-owned company is not planning an IPO.

Image Trailer 2007

Dachser is now a Societas Europaea (SE). Dachser GmbH & Co. KG has transferred its major business fields Road Logistics (including the European Logistics and Food Logistics Business Lines) and Air & Sea Logistics to the 100%-owned subsidiary Dachser SE. Dachser GmbH & Co. KG itself will operate as a holding company called Dachser Group SE & Co. KG.

By providing a modern holding structure, the legal form of the SE offers the family-owned company an ideal framework in which to combine its corporate structure with subsidiaries in Germany and abroad. In the future, Dachser’s name in the German marketplace will be Dachser SE, but the various names of the country organizations outside of Germany will remain unchanged.

This legal conversion is not tied to any change in the shareholder structure. There will not be an IPO, nor will outside investors acquire any holdings. Dachser CEO Bernhard Simon said, “We have altered our legal form to fit our global growth strategy and have therefore opened the way for the future. Dachser is a successful family-owned company and will remain so in the future.”

The existing Administrative Board will also continue to operate as a supervisory board at Dachser SE with oversight functions.

Organizational and management structure: Customer proximity and decentralized decision-making process

Within Dachser Group SE & Co. KG, the Executive Board and the corporate positions reporting to it will carry out central management and control functions at the global group-wide level. The Executive Board includes Bernhard Simon (CEO), Michael Schilling (COO Road Logistics), who also serves as deputy head of the Executive Board, Thomas Reuter (COO Air & Sea Logistics), and Burkhard Eling (CFO).

Eight operating divisions, which are led by Managing Directors, will function at the level below the Board within Dachser SE. Aside from Dachser Food Logistics, which Alfred Miller will continue to manage, these units are divided up by region: Germany, North Central Europe, France & Maghreb, and Iberia in the Road Logistics business field, and EMEA, Americas, and Asia Pacific in the Air & Sea Logistics business field. “The eight operating divisions will reinforce our decentralized business strategy, giving us the ability to be even quicker and more flexible in our decision-making. And once again this will bring us closer to our customers,” said Simon.

Northampton, 22 January 2015.  International transport logistics service provider Dachser UK has confirmed its membership of the Chemical Business Association (CBA) underlining the Company’s commitment to the chemical supply chain sector in the UK.

The CBA is the voice of the UK chemical supply chain and Dachser is pleased to add its own brand of European transport, distribution and warehouse operations skills to the pool of professional expertise already represented by members of this prestigious association.

The CBA represents a wide range of businesses – from distributors and traders to manufacturers and blenders as well as logistics service providers. It delivers advocacy for members of the chemical industry in Westminster and Brussels; it offers key compliance information and advice on regulatory demands and other legal requirements and is an effective disseminator of supply chain best-practice through its seminars and workshops.

CBA’s Chief Executive, Peter Newport, said, “I would like to welcome Dachser UK into CBA membership and very much value its support for our work on behalf of the chemical supply chain.”

Dachser UK is also a member of The Hazchem Network, linking regional logistics companies that specialise in dangerous goods, via a hub and spoke transport system that provides fast, secure and reliable distribution throughout the UK. Dachser secures software development

Certification of Corporate IT in accordance with ISO 27001 renewed and enhanced

Kempten, January 14, 2015. Information security in accordance with DIN ISO/IEC 27001 is not a snapshot event, but a continuous improvement process. In keeping with this principle, Dachser not only arranges for annual audits of its Corporate IT, it currently is also having TÜV Süd review its entire software development process.

For over 25 years now, Dachser has relied on the complete in-house development of its core applications, DOMINO and OTHELLO (management software for overland transport services as well as air and sea freight, respectively), MIKADO (warehouse management) and EDI (Electronic Data Interchange). In addition, there are the Web-based eLogistics tools (including those for order acceptance, or tracking & tracing). All of these applications are developed, rolled out, and updated at weekly intervals at Dachser, on a centralized basis for the branch offices and country organizations. Of the total 280 employees at its head office in Kempten, 100 currently are engaged in software development.

“Our core systems are highly integrated, can be flexibly adapted, and reflect the state of the art everywhere; that is a unique selling proposition in the logistics industry,” comments Christian von Rützen, Team Leader IT-Security at Dachser. “With the ISO 27001 certification, we are issuing a clear statement on efficiency, quality, and professionalism in operating, security, and software development processes.”

Electronic data exchange needs secure IT processes

Customer data in safe hands: that is the motivation behind ISO 27001 certification for Dachser’s central IT system. Indeed, electronic data exchange has clearly picked up pace over the last few years—and inherently, the demands on IT security as well. Today, 80 percent of all orders at Dachser are already processed electronically; more than 13,000 customers have linked their systems to the Dachser EDI Center, and more than 16,000 use the eLogistics tools.

“These companies know that their own global supply chains depend on the constant availability of their logistics supplier’s systems, and therefore insist on commensurate security infrastructure in tenders and audits,” von Rützen clarifies. “Considering this environment, we are in a superb position for the complete ISO 27001 certification of our central IT system.”

Dachser had its Corporate IT certified according to ISO 27001 in December 2011—one of the first logistics providers to do so. In the process, a host of aspects of information security were examined, such as the protection from cyber attacks, security of Internet applications, IT risk management, fail-safe performance, emergency planning, and confidentiality regulations.  For annual audits, advancements and improvements based on preceding audits are integrated into the evaluation.

Dachser expands capacity in Belgium

Kempten, October 13, 2014. With its move to a new and larger property in Willebroek, Belgium, international logistics provider Dachser is boosting its presence in the Benelux region. New construction took five months, with the new logistics center launching its operations on October 6th. Construction included a 7,000-square-meter transit terminal with 68 gates and a three-story office building that measures 2,300 square meters.

“In recent years, we have experienced strong growth in Willebroek, and our capacity in the old facility had reached its limits. The newly added capacity will help us continue to develop new opportunities together with our customers,” says Aat van der Meer, Managing Director Dachser Benelux.

Willebroek is a strategically favorable location between Brussels and the port of Antwerp. As a result, this branch office has excellent connections to the most important European and international economic regions. Dachser Belgium has been at this location since 1995 and currently employs a staff of 90 people. The newly built facilities are less than five kilometers from the former premises, which will be closed once the move is completed.

The new transit terminal is a state-of-the-art facility that has an underfloor conveyor chain for convenient and safe transport of shipments. Furthermore, at 37,800 square meters, the new property’s size provides ample room for expansion.

The commissioning of the newly constructed facilities in Willebroek is yet another milestone in Dachser’s development in Belgium. “We have maintained a presence in the Belgian market since 1975 and since then, we have significantly expanded our network,” says Michael Schilling, COO Road Logistics at Dachser. “By dovetailing overland freight services with air and sea transport, we can provide our customers with seamless access to international markets.”

Dachser adds new investments in Asia

Kempten/Mumbai, September 18, 2014. International logistics provider Dachser continues to expand its Asia operations, taking over its partner’s shares in three countries. As a result, the family-owned company is now the sole shareholder in the company’s ventures in India and Thailand and a majority shareholder of the joint venture in Bangladesh.

The collaboration between Dachser and AFL Pvt. Ltd., one of the leading Indian logistics companies, began in 1996 and successfully evolved into a strategic partnership. The two companies—both of which are family-owned—jointly developed the regional markets in India from 2007 to date by founding a joint venture in India, and they also established additional country organizations in Bangladesh and Thailand, making them part of Dachser’s globally linked logistics network. In 2011, the company was renamed Dachser India.

In August 2014, Dachser acquired all of the shares in India and Thailand owned by Indglobal, an affiliated company of AFL, and a majority of its shares in Bangladesh.

“This was an important step toward strengthening our intercontinental network and toward being able to work even more closely with our customers in these promising growth markets,” says Thomas Reuter, COO Air & Sea Logistics at Dachser. In India, where the local head office is headquartered in Mumbai, the logistics provider maintains a seamless presence with around 500 employees at 27 locations. Its core business revolves around air and sea freight services as well as contract logistics. In Bangladesh, Dachser has a presence at two locations, while in Thailand, its office in Bangkok takes care of Dachser customers.

In recent years, Dachser has made huge investments in the Asia Pacific region, establishing subsidiaries in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia and expanding its activities in Greater China and Korea.

Dachser welcomes a record number of trainees and students

Kempten, September 11, 2014. As the new training year begins, the logistics provider Dachser is welcoming 589 trainees and students in Germany—a new record. They include 45 professional truck drivers. Dachser is now training 1,378 up-and-coming logistics experts.

Top quality training is the required foundation for a career in logistics— traditionally a top priority at Dachser. At this family-owned company, the logistics experts of tomorrow will find a wide variety of responsibilities and opportunities in an international setting. “We welcome employees who are interested in other countries and cultures, who respect people and the environment, and who want to work independently, creatively, and with a sense of responsibility,” says Bernhard Simon, Dachser’s CEO, describing the demands placed on the junior logisticians. Simon is always pleased when young people make a conscious decision to start their career at Dachser. “Our high percentage of trainees, which averages ten percent in Germany, shows that we are considered to be an attractive employer and also illustrates the importance of training at Dachser,” adds Martina Szautner, Corporate Director Human Resources.

Seven different training tracks are available to junior staff: commercial, industrial, IT, and technical job training or dual courses of study focused on freight forwarding/transport/logistics.

An international training program, the “Dachser Education Program,” based on Germany’s successful dual model, which the logistics provider has put in place in five European countries, is bearing fruit. In 2013, 14 trainees completed their training as Dachser forwarding and logistics specialists in various European countries. In 2014, new logistics trainees will be starting their courses of study in the Netherlands, Great Britain, Poland, Hungary, and France. “Our human resources policy is international and is geared toward the long term with the purpose of enhancing our performance capability,” says Simon.

DACHSER magazine wins the Gold Fox Award

Munich/Kempten, September 9, 2014. The company magazine published by the global logistics provider Dachser wins the gold award for the industry sector “Transport/Logistics.” The jury of the efficiency award in corporate publishing pays tribute to the magazine’s editorial concept, linguistic craftsmanship, and the opportunities for additional information that it provides.

According to the jury, logistics is characterized by very technical and economics-/business-related aspects on one hand, but on the other customer and employee relationships based on trust are necessary for its operational business activities. There are only a few industries where responsibility and customer contacts are as widely delegated as in the transport sector. “The magazine combines these two different levels,” the jury states in its explanation for choosing to bestow the Fox Award on the DACHSER magazine.

“The appeal of our corporate magazine to different target groups is the result of that special integrative understanding of networks and networking that has made Dachser one of the leading logistics companies worldwide,” says Dr. Andreas Froschmayer, Corporate Director Corporate Development, Strategy & PR at Dachser. “We are delighted that the jurors also found this approach persuasive.”

The DACHSER magazine is published four times a year in German, English, French, and Spanish and provides information about current developments and trends in the logistics industry. Its 55-year history makes it one of the oldest continuously published corporate publications in Germany. Its factually accurate background articles on transport and logistics are accompanied by a mix of other journalistic formats on science, culture, and business and industry. The publication’s target groups include customers, employees, and other interested readers all over the world.

The Fox Award was presented for the first time in 2011 and is the first efficiency award in corporate publishing. Jurors from the sciences and the media evaluate corporate media (both internal and external communications) with regard to quality, dialogue skills, sales quality, and brand conformity. The gold award honors “a media concept that demonstrates above average efficiency performance according to all criteria and that can therefore be viewed as an inspiring role model,” said the event organizers. Well-known companies and agencies submitted a total of 422 articles this year.

Logistics with a green footprint

Dachser DIY Logistics interlinks sustainability and global growth

spoga+gafa 2014, 8/31 – 9/2, Cologne, Hall 6.1, Stand D001

Green footprints on the floor of the spoga+gafa hall – has someone stepped in a can of paint during preparations for the trade fair? No, the footprints at the entrance to Hall 6.1 at the Cologne DIY and Garden Fair lead directly to the Dachser stand, where trade visitors can use stickers to leave “footprints” of their own. It’s all in a good cause, because Dachser will be planting a tree for each footprint.  The logistics provider is cooperating with the “We plant trees” initiative of the German DIY, Construction and Garden Industry Trade Association, BHB e.V.

“How can you calculate the exact CO2 emission of a shipment, reduce it wherever possible and, at the same time, support customers in the DIY and garden industry in their logistics-intensive, global growth? Those are only a few of the questions that suppliers of logistics services are currently facing,” explains Ralf Meistes, Department Head DIY-Logistics at Dachser.

As Europe’s leading provider of groupage logistics, Dachser uses a computer tool to calculate the ecological footprint of a shipment. The program is automated and makes its calculations based on real transport data, such as loading capacity, vehicle type and distance actually covered. This system complies with both European standard EN16258 and French law (Decree 1336) on carbon emissions reporting requirements. In addition, Dachser has implemented a whole series of measures for reducing the environmental footprint of transport and storage as much as possible.

For information on this, see http://www.dachser.com/de/en/Ecology_49.htm

Worldwide activity serving the DIY and garden supply industries

In its fully integrated logistics network, Dachser collects goods from their producers, stores them when required, delivers them by truck to construction and garden supply stores and, where needed, actually puts them on the shelves. The goods flow continuously as required through the Dachser DIY supply pipeline, from supplier to point-of-sale and occasionally back again. As a result, all products are available on the market at all times and are never out of stock. In addition, Dachser also takes care of direct delivery to the end user of large and/or heavy goods from the DIY and garden inventory and thus supports the creation of multichannel distribution structures for customers in industry and trade.

Dachser’s internationally structured DIY Logistics solution provides its know-how to the DIY and garden supply industries. After all, the logistics firm delivers goods daily in a fixed timeframe to all 18,000 DIY and garden supply stores in Europe. The SynLOG consolidation concept reduces ramp contacts, and Quality Control in the Far East completes the concept. Dachser DIY logistics cooperates with the BHB industry association, the Haus & Garten manufacturers’ association, the IVG (garden industry association), the Global Home Improvement Network (GHIN), and GreenNet.

Dachser builds a European Hub for food in Erlensee

Kempten/Erlensee, July 25, 2014. Global logistics service provider Dachser is making a new investment in Erlensee (Main-Kinzig District of Hesse). The company is erecting a European Food Shipment Hub with a total surface of 70,000 square meters in Landendiebach. The total investment is some 25 million euros.

Dachser has been represented in Erlensee since 2012 by its Frankfurt-Ost logistics center, where groupage shipments are transshipped. With construction to begin in September 2014, Dachser Food Logistics will soon have a new facility, built at a former airbase in Langendiebach.

The new location is conveniently located near Highway A 66, and in the fall of 2015 it will take over from the facility located in Offenbach. “We are pleased that a majority of the 160 employees working for us in Offenbach will follow us the 19 kilometers to Erlensee. In the medium term, we will also create 40 new jobs,” says Branch Manager Mathias Oetter.

The Offenbach Branch Office is the Dachser Food Logistics base for the Rhine-Main district and also serves as a central national food transshipment platform. Domestic shipments travel through the hub to reach their goal within 24 hours. The Offenbach facility, however, has no room to grow. Erlensee will replace it with expanded capacity for the rising volumes of inbound and outbound shipments as well as serving as an expanded hub. The new building includes a double-spanned 8,500 square meter transfer hall, cooled to between +2 and +7 degrees Celsius. In a second phase, the usable area can be expanded by another 3,000 square meters. 87 trucks can be simultaneously loaded or unloaded. In addition, a 2,500 square meter office building, a filling station, and a truck washing facility are being built. By integrating truck parking spaces, public parking areas can be left free.

“With this new facility, we are expanding the existing transfer node for German branch offices into a European hub for trans-border food shipments by all partners of the European Food Network,” notes Alfred Miller, Managing Director, Dachser Food Logistics. The new branch office will thus not only be an important hub for Dachser’s European Food Logistics facilities but also a core component of the European Food Network founded in 2013 by twelve partners. By using the additional bays and transfer areas being constructed as part of the new platform, some 26 countries can now be interconnected and transfer procedures and shipping times shortened.
