Logistics with a green footprint

Dachser DIY Logistics interlinks sustainability and global growth

spoga+gafa 2014, 8/31 – 9/2, Cologne, Hall 6.1, Stand D001

Green footprints on the floor of the spoga+gafa hall – has someone stepped in a can of paint during preparations for the trade fair? No, the footprints at the entrance to Hall 6.1 at the Cologne DIY and Garden Fair lead directly to the Dachser stand, where trade visitors can use stickers to leave “footprints” of their own. It’s all in a good cause, because Dachser will be planting a tree for each footprint.  The logistics provider is cooperating with the “We plant trees” initiative of the German DIY, Construction and Garden Industry Trade Association, BHB e.V.

“How can you calculate the exact CO2 emission of a shipment, reduce it wherever possible and, at the same time, support customers in the DIY and garden industry in their logistics-intensive, global growth? Those are only a few of the questions that suppliers of logistics services are currently facing,” explains Ralf Meistes, Department Head DIY-Logistics at Dachser.

As Europe’s leading provider of groupage logistics, Dachser uses a computer tool to calculate the ecological footprint of a shipment. The program is automated and makes its calculations based on real transport data, such as loading capacity, vehicle type and distance actually covered. This system complies with both European standard EN16258 and French law (Decree 1336) on carbon emissions reporting requirements. In addition, Dachser has implemented a whole series of measures for reducing the environmental footprint of transport and storage as much as possible.

For information on this, see http://www.dachser.com/de/en/Ecology_49.htm

Worldwide activity serving the DIY and garden supply industries

In its fully integrated logistics network, Dachser collects goods from their producers, stores them when required, delivers them by truck to construction and garden supply stores and, where needed, actually puts them on the shelves. The goods flow continuously as required through the Dachser DIY supply pipeline, from supplier to point-of-sale and occasionally back again. As a result, all products are available on the market at all times and are never out of stock. In addition, Dachser also takes care of direct delivery to the end user of large and/or heavy goods from the DIY and garden inventory and thus supports the creation of multichannel distribution structures for customers in industry and trade.

Dachser’s internationally structured DIY Logistics solution provides its know-how to the DIY and garden supply industries. After all, the logistics firm delivers goods daily in a fixed timeframe to all 18,000 DIY and garden supply stores in Europe. The SynLOG consolidation concept reduces ramp contacts, and Quality Control in the Far East completes the concept. Dachser DIY logistics cooperates with the BHB industry association, the Haus & Garten manufacturers’ association, the IVG (garden industry association), the Global Home Improvement Network (GHIN), and GreenNet.

Dachser builds a European Hub for food in Erlensee

Kempten/Erlensee, July 25, 2014. Global logistics service provider Dachser is making a new investment in Erlensee (Main-Kinzig District of Hesse). The company is erecting a European Food Shipment Hub with a total surface of 70,000 square meters in Landendiebach. The total investment is some 25 million euros.

Dachser has been represented in Erlensee since 2012 by its Frankfurt-Ost logistics center, where groupage shipments are transshipped. With construction to begin in September 2014, Dachser Food Logistics will soon have a new facility, built at a former airbase in Langendiebach.

The new location is conveniently located near Highway A 66, and in the fall of 2015 it will take over from the facility located in Offenbach. “We are pleased that a majority of the 160 employees working for us in Offenbach will follow us the 19 kilometers to Erlensee. In the medium term, we will also create 40 new jobs,” says Branch Manager Mathias Oetter.

The Offenbach Branch Office is the Dachser Food Logistics base for the Rhine-Main district and also serves as a central national food transshipment platform. Domestic shipments travel through the hub to reach their goal within 24 hours. The Offenbach facility, however, has no room to grow. Erlensee will replace it with expanded capacity for the rising volumes of inbound and outbound shipments as well as serving as an expanded hub. The new building includes a double-spanned 8,500 square meter transfer hall, cooled to between +2 and +7 degrees Celsius. In a second phase, the usable area can be expanded by another 3,000 square meters. 87 trucks can be simultaneously loaded or unloaded. In addition, a 2,500 square meter office building, a filling station, and a truck washing facility are being built. By integrating truck parking spaces, public parking areas can be left free.

“With this new facility, we are expanding the existing transfer node for German branch offices into a European hub for trans-border food shipments by all partners of the European Food Network,” notes Alfred Miller, Managing Director, Dachser Food Logistics. The new branch office will thus not only be an important hub for Dachser’s European Food Logistics facilities but also a core component of the European Food Network founded in 2013 by twelve partners. By using the additional bays and transfer areas being constructed as part of the new platform, some 26 countries can now be interconnected and transfer procedures and shipping times shortened.

Dachser Wins Award for Outstanding Corporate Film

Kempten, May 20, 2014. Cut!, a corporate film by the Kempten-based logistics provider, wins the intermedia-globe Gold award at the WorldMediaFestival in Hamburg. The film is one of the 14 best international submissions from a field of over 700.

As an international competition for communications media, the WorldMediaFestival is one of the most important industry events. The festival’s independent jury, made up of members from around the world, viewed over 700 submissions from 34 countries before awarding the prize. From the large number of films, the jury members selected 14 Gold winners, among them Dachser’s entry in the category of ‘Public Relations: Recruiting.’ The relevant criteria were artistic creativity, technical quality, video and soundtrack design, comprehensibility, credibility, and overall impression. “This prize is a real team effort,” says Birgit Kastner-Simon, Corporate Director of Corporate Marketing at Dachser. “Our film makes logistics into something tangible, something experienced. I’m very pleased that the festival jury has recognized this approach with a Gold award.“

The five-and-a-half minute long corporate film illustrates Dachser’s global services portfolio in the blink of an eye: A movie shoot in China comes to a halt because the set – an alpine hut – is missing. The prop is flown in from Tyrol, and the director returns the favor with some typical Chinese cuisine, which goes by sea and land to reach its recipient. “We deliberately gave the script an unusual and unconventional concept,” explains Birgit Kastner-Simon, who received the prize on May 14 at a gala event in Hamburg. “By alluding to well-known film genres, we were able to take perfect advantage of the possibilities of film as a medium. Also, elements like the alpine hut refer to our company’s origins.” The film was created in cooperation with PI_spirit Filmproduktionsgesellschaft based in Cologne. The premiere took place at transport logistic 2013, the leading international trade show of the transport and logistics industry.

Dachser’s Northampton Logistics Centre officially opened

Northampton/Kempten, June 3, 2014. On May 30th, Dachser Ltd in the UK  opened its new integrated logistics centre in Northampton. The new facility occupies a 7.4 hectare site and represents an investment of EUR 26 million by the company.

Customers, suppliers and representatives from local business, industry and government were present at the opening ceremony. “Our new logistics centre is a great example of how Dachser has grown in the UK in tandem with its customers,” stated Bernhard Simon, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dachser, at the opening. “With this new logistics centre, we will satisfy the demands for global integrated supply chains. We are continuing our growth. Over the long term, we can enlarge the new transit terminal when we identify new potential.”

Located on the Brackmills industrial estate to the south of Northampton, the new facility houses the logistics centre for the Northampton branch as well as the UK Head Office. It comprises a 5,948 sq m transit terminal, a 10,560 sq m contract logistics warehouse which can accommodate up to 20,000 racked pallet positions, and a 1,954 sq m two-storey office building. The solid growth of Dachser’s UK country organisation, and in Northampton especially the flourishing European export business as well as contract logistics and value-added-services, made the new investment an essential strategic step for the organisation.

Environmental factors played an important part in the design of the premises, which conform to the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standard. BREEAM is the world’s leading design and assessment method for sustainable buildings.

“The Northampton Logistics Centre is connected to the global Dachser network with daily direct freight services,” explains Nick Lowe, Managing Director, Dachser UK. “With this new construction, the Northampton location is evolving into an important hub within Dachser’s European network,” Lowe continued.

Dachser UK has been established in Northampton since 1975, and also has branches in Dartford (2005) and Rochdale ( 2010).  Ensuring that the new facility remained within Northampton was an important consideration in order to look after the interests of the company’s workforce, and the location is anyway optimally situated from a logistics viewpoint in the heart of England, with excellent connections to the national trunk road and motorway network. Dachser UK currently employs a total of 302 people, 157 of whom are based in Northampton where the company expects to create another 40 jobs over the next five years.

Dachser: Internationalization Fuels Growth

Kempten, Munich. April 9, 2014. A strong second half-year and the successful integration of the two Spanish acquisitions, Azkar and Transunion, boosted Dachser’s revenue in 2013. The logistics service provider was able to increase its gross revenue by 13.2 percent, to 4.99 billion euro. When investment income is included, the company exceeded the revenue milestone of five billion euro for first time this past fiscal year.  Dachser pushed into a new dimension of internationalization also in regard to figures for employees, locations, and shipments.

Here is an overview of the most important key indicators for 2013:

  • 13.2 percent increase in gross revenue, to 4.99 billion euro
  • 24,900 employees, 3,250 more than last year
  • 471 locations in 42 countries
  • 69.6 million shipments (up 19 percent)
  • 119 million euro invested in tangible assets

At a press conference in Munich, Dachser CEO Bernhard Simon expressed great satisfaction with the integration and business progress of the Spanish companies Azkar and Transunion, which were acquired in January 2013.  “Azkar consistently focused on international business and thereby generated the expected network effects, most notably in conjunction with our reinvigorated French country organization.

Transunion not only strengthened our sea freight business and the transatlantic routes, but also completed the integration in record time: The company has already been doing business under the Dachser name since 1/1/2014.”

Internationalization as the key driver of growth

While Food Logistics achieved an 8.2 percent increase in revenue on its own, European Logistics and Air & Sea Logistics grew primarily as the result of acquisitions. At the group level, Dachser achieved organic revenue growth of 2.3 percent. Dachser CEO Simon in this regard: “For about two years now, we have only been seeing marginal growth in the major logistics markets such as Germany. In the future, dynamic growth will be driven by international, cross-border freight services. This applies to the groupage business with industrial customers, to contract logistics, and also to food logistics, which has traditionally been set up on a regional, rather than national basis. With the start-up of the European Food Network, consisting of twelve partners in 21 European countries, we have forged a pioneering alliance in this regard—one that has greatly resonated with customers.

Because shipping volumes are no longer increasing as sharply as in the past, Dachser’s substantial investment in the physical logistics infrastructure in Europe can be somewhat curtailed in the future. In 2013, 119 million euro were invested in tangible assets, primarily in new construction and expansion of branches such as in Langenau, Schönefeld, Northampton, and Lyss, Switzerland near Bern. The amount budgeted for 2014 is 110 million euro. Simon: “For the upcoming five-year period, we are budgeting an adjusted investment volume of about one billion euro.”

Many new records

Dachser set many new records in 2013. The number of employees reached 24,900 by the end of the year, with 48 percent of the workforce employed outside of Germany. The number of shipments soared to 69.6 million (a 19 percent gain), thanks to Azkar’s strong market position in the industrial parcels business. The group’s tonnage, not counting TEU, increased to 32.9 million tons (a 9 percent gain). Dachser has a network of 471 branches at its disposal and is now represented by facilities of its own in 42 countries around the world (5 more than before).

Good prospects for 2014

Bernhard Simon was optimistic about Fiscal Year 2014. Aided by the mild winter, the momentum from the 4th quarter of 2013 carried over into the new year. “Sustainable growth based on expansion of international traffic and valuable contract logistics services outside of Europe as well.” That’s the focus for 2014, as stated by Simon. “Last year, Dachser definitely matured into a worldwide company. Our task now is to strengthen local management under the umbrella of the global organization. Because consistent proximity to our customers is essential in order to keep Dachser on the path of growth in the future as well.”

Dachser UK Honoured by BIFA with Staff Development Award

Northampton, 29 January 2014

BIFA Awards 2013 - Staff Development (Nicky Holdcroft)

Caption: (l-r) Julia Bradbury; Nicky Holdcroft, HR Manager, Dachser UK; Cliff Atkinson, Albacore Systems

Dachser UK is proud to have been honoured by the British International Freight Association at its annual awards ceremony held in London on 16th January.  The award, sponsored by the Albacore Group and presented by TV presenter Julia Bradbury, is for Staff Development.  The judges commented that “Dachser showed outstanding commitment to staff development with numerous schemes. These included setting up its own training facility and monitoring progress every step of the way”.

Dachser UK is part of the German head-quartered Dachser organisation, a global logistics provider. Dachser views itself as a ‘learning organisation’ and is committed to the on-going development of its staff. This philosophy led the group to invest in the Dachser Academy in 2008.  Located in Cologne, the Academy provides a selection of initial and advanced training for employees.  It also helps to support and communicate the development programme.

HR Manager for Dachser UK, Nicky Holdcroft, who accepted the BIFA award on behalf of the UK organisation, explains how the development programme works in the UK. ‘It ensures that each employee understands the business plan and is able to actively contribute to the achievement of the Company’s business. There is a focus on the conduct expected of employees in a work environment that fosters growth and personal, as well as corporate development,” she noted.

Among other training initiatives, in 2010 and in partnership with The Real Apprenticeship Company, Dachser UK implemented its Apprenticeship Programme to attract and develop entry level recruits into the business.  Debbie Shandley of The Real Apprenticeship Company outlines the scheme, “The two-year programme is an Advanced Apprenticeship, within which each participant receives a foundation for future development, spending time in all departments learning the business in all its aspects.  The result is an industry-recognised Level 3 qualification in Logistics Operations Management.”

Dachser also provides opportunities for suitably qualified employees to take a Bachelor Degree in Logistics at the Berlin School of Economics; a course fully developed and supported by Dachser.  The aim of this scheme is to train future leaders, rounded in their knowledge and experience of logistics and fully equipped to support business growth plans in the future.

Georgia Sunderland of Dachser in Rochdale is currently midway through the three-year course in Berlin and also attended the BIFA awards ceremony. “I’m really pleased that Dachser has been recognised by BIFA as a company that provides superior training options for the development of its staff.  I personally am benefiting tremendously from the opportunity to study in Berlin and to gain excellent practical experience via placements at various facilities throughout the Dachser network,” said Georgia.
