Evergreen Group hold Naming Ceremony for EVER LOADING

July 18, 2014

Evergreen Group today held the naming ceremony for EVER LOADING, the sixth of its L-type vessels to be built by CSBC Corporation in Taiwan. The ceremony took place at CSBC’s Kaohsiung shipyard and was officiated by Mr. Bronson Hsieh, Evergreen Group’s Second Vice Group Chairman. The official rope-cutting of the new 8,508 TEU vessel was performed by Ms. Michelle Nardulli, a member of the Board of Directors of Italia Marittima, Evergreen’s Italian subsidiary.

Mr. Hsieh said in his speech that the vessel’s name symbolizes Evergreen Line’s target for continued business success. He also mentioned that the L-type vessels are very flexible in fleet deployment.  With the smooth implementation of Evergreen’s fleet renewal program, such vessels have been widely deployed across the carrier’s service network, including trade routes from the Far East to Europe, Middle East and the US West Coast.

In the latest development, Evergreen recently made use of the 8,508 TEU ships to launch a new Asia – US East Coast service via Suez Canal with strategic partners.  Currently the L-class vessels are among the maximum size of containerships that can pass under the Bayonne Bridge and call at New York port.  Therefore, the service enables Evergreen to lower unit costs and enhance competitiveness in the Asia – US East Coast trade.

Owned by Evergreen Marine (UK) Ltd., EVER LOADING is 334.8 meters in length, 45.8 meters wide, with 948 reefer plugs. The L-class containership is fitted with alternative marine power, ballast water treatment system, electronic-controlled fuel-injection engine that supports slow steaming and many more eco-friendly designs. After her delivery on 29th July, the newbuilding will join Evergreen Line’s Asia – US West Coast route, replacing an older vessel.

In 2010 Evergreen Group commenced its current fleet renewal program, which in total includes 30 L-type vessels.  With the delivery of EVER LOADING, Evergreen adds the 26th such vessel to its operating fleet. The remaining four newbuildings are being built by CSBC and will be delivered by the third quarter of 2015.

Germany Honors Evergreen Group Chairman Dr Y F Chang Awards prestigious Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit

Taipei, Taiwan, March 13, 2014—Evergreen Group Chairman Dr. Chang Yung-Fa has been presented with the Federal Republic of Germany’s Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit in recognition of his contribution to the port of Hamburg; his achievement in the international transportation industry; his devotion to charity and promotion of education and cultural exchange. The award was presented on behalf of Mr. Joachim Gauck, the President of Germany, by Mr. Mirko Kruppa, Acting Director General of the German Institute, Taipei at a ceremony held at the Chang Yung-Fa Foundation in Taipei. Mr. Frank Horch, Senator of Economic Affairs of the City of Hamburg, travelled from Germany especially to present the certificate conferring the honor on Dr. Chang.

Nomination for the honor is mostly made on the recommendation of local government representatives and is approved by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany for achievements in the political, economic, social or intellectual realm.  Dr. Chang is the third Taiwanese honoree to receive the Cross of the Order of Merit but the first to be made a Commander.

Evergreen’s links with Germany date back more than 30 years.  In 1979, Evergreen Marine Corp, the Group’s shipping division, launched its Far East – Europe service, successfully breaking the then monopoly of the trade by the Far Eastern Freight Conference (FEFC). Hamburg was the first port of call of the inaugural voyage by EVER VITAL, the first Taiwan-built containership. In 1984, Evergreen Line launched an unprecedented round-the-world eastbound and westbound service. The first port of call on this service was also Hamburg.

Through its comprehensive service network, Evergreen Line continues to provide convenient links for German imports and exports. Furthermore, the carrier’s efficient feeder connections help boost the throughput of Hamburg port and enhance its position as one of the world’s major trans-shipment hubs.

Currently Evergreen Line operates three services to Germany, including two strings from the Far East and one Trans-Atlantic route. Through capacity swap arrangements with other carriers, the line offers a further seven loops serving Germany. In the ports of Hamburg and Bremerhaven, Evergreen’s annual throughput has exceeded 500,000 TEUs over the past decade, contributing more than 40 million euros to local container shipping interests, including port, terminal, rail and trucking companies, etc.

Evergreen Group established Evergreen Deutschland GmbH (now renamed Evergreen Shipping Agency Deutschland GmbH) in 1986 and built its own office building in Hamburg.  The company also has offices in Bremen, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich.

Evergreen Group also works closely with German aviation companies. EVA Air Cargo code-shares with Lufthansa Cargo on freight routes. EVA ordered 24 new A321-200 passenger aircraft that Airbus builds in Hamburg. The aircraft are outfitted with Recaro seats, made by a German company. And Evergreen Aviation Technologies (EGAT) selected Lufthansa Technik (LHT) to supply components EVA’s Boeing 747-400s and Airbus A330s and A321s.

In addition to his countless contributions to international transport growth and development, Dr. Chang is generous and tireless in his dedication to charity and social welfare. He founded the Chang Yung-Fa Foundation in 1985 to provide charitable aid and emergency relief.  The financial resources of this charitable fund are contributed mainly by Dr. Chang himself.

In recent years, numerous honors have been bestowed upon Dr. Chang in Taiwan and abroad for his remarkable achievements in global transportation and contributions to social welfare. Including the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit, Dr. Chang has to date received fifteen medals of distinction and eight honorary doctorate titles.

CKYHE Alliance to be established: Evergreen to join existing partners

COSCO, K LINE, YANGMING, HANJIN and EVERGREEN LINE are pleased to announce that the five parties have agreed in principle to establish a shipping alliance.  To be operational only on the trades between Asia and Europe, including the Mediterranean region, it will be called the CKYHE Alliance.

The lines intend to formally begin the new Alliance as of 1st March 2014 subject to compliance with the relevant regulations. The CKYHE will commence operations in mid April with six joint services operating between Asia and Northern Europe and four loops dedicated to the Asia-Mediterranean route.

The members of CKYHE have agreed to continuously review services on the Asia-Northern Europe and Asia-Mediterranean trades in order to optimize their efficiency and to enhance their service quality in terms of network coverage. The lines’ customers will benefit from a better quality of service in terms of transit times and service frequency.

Operational efficiencies will also strengthen the Alliance members’ effective environmental stewardship.  The lines have a commitment to cleaner shipping, which they understand their customers value highly.  The Alliance will continue to pursue measures to minimize bunker consumption via ‘eco-slow steaming’ and to reduce CO2 emissions.

At 14:00 that day EVER SUMMIT received a distress call from the BITU GULF, a Panamanian tanker, which was sinking.  The containership was on route from Shekou, China to Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia. The captain of EVER SUMMIT immediately ordered his crew to stand by for a rescue operation and made best speed to the location of the distressed vessel.

Upon finding the lifeboat of BITU GULF around forty nautical miles off the coast of Vietnam, the crew of EVER SUMMIT acted promptly and successfully rescued all sixteen seafarers of the tanker at 16:35 pm.

The rescued seafarers received care on board EVER SUMMIT as the ship continued its voyage to Tanjung Pelepas. On completion of the rescue operation, Evergreen notified Lilly Maritime Pvt. Ltd, the owner of BITU GULF, to take responsibility for their crew in Tanjung Pelepas and arrange their repatriation.

EVER SUMMIT is one of Evergreen Line’s「S」type vessels with a capacity of 7,024 TEUs.  The ship is currently deployed in the carrier’s Far East-Middle East Gulf (APG) service.

On November 28, 2011 the crew of Evergreen Line’s 1,164-TEU UNI- ASPIRE performed a life-saving mission south of Hong Kong and rescued a Korean seaman.
