GEODIS Collaborates with Bastian Solutions on New Fulfillment Site to Deliver Highest AutoStore Throughput Globally

Global leading transport and logistics provider GEODIS today announced a partnership with Bastian Solutions to implement an AutoStore system into a new fulfillment site for a leading clothing retailer. The $48 million material handling equipment deal will deliver the highest throughput documented of an AutoStore system globally to support the retailer’s omnichannel capabilities, including e-Commerce and its more than 1,000 stores across the United States.

AutoStore is a pioneering goods-to-person automated storage and retrieval system that is the market leader in storage density. AutoStore Bins are stacked vertically in a grid and retrieved by Robots that travel on the top layer of the system, allowing the grid to be placed around columns and on mezzanines and multiple levels. This design allows bins of products to be stacked on top of each other in a condensed grid-style system, increasing storage capacity up to four times in the same footprint and performance up to 10 times without added workers.

GEODIS is estimated to move up to 270,000 order lines per day in service of both retail store and direct-to-consumer channels, making this the AutoStore system with the highest throughput in the world. GEODIS will use the AutoStore system to facilitate fulfillment for its customer’s retail and e-Commerce channels to deliver a truly omnichannel solution. GEODIS will also utilize the AutoStore technology to expedite e-Commerce returns, which continues to be an industry priority due to recent increases in online purchases. In addition to featuring the innovative AutoStore storage and fulfillment technology, the 400,000-square-foot facility will include robotic piece picking with five robotic arms, automated packing and carton closing, and more. Construction for the site is expected to begin in January 2022 and wrap in November 2022.

The facility extends GEODIS’ contract logistics capabilities in India to support the e-commerce boom with advanced warehousing solutions for retailers

GEODIS, a global leading transport and logistics services provider, today announced the upcoming launch of a new multi-user facility at the LOGOS Logistics Estate in Luhari, 60 kilometres north of Delhi.  This will support the rapidly growing needs of GEODIS clients within the retail sector. Developed by LOGOS, one of Asia Pacific’s top logistics property groups, the new purpose-built facility offers both a modern infrastructure and an extensive space that allows GEODIS to fully optimize its contract logistics offerings to the Indian market which is currently experiencing unprecedented demand.

The shift towards online shopping and omnichannel platforms, accelerated by the pandemic, has compelled retailers to seek logistics operators who can provide the sheer capacity to manage large merchandise inventory, along with the necessary tools to ensure both real-time and end-to-end visibility. The 26,654 sqm warehouse will have a state-of-the-art storage system consisting of both selective and very narrow aisle (VNA) pallet racks.  Equipped in this way, the new facility addresses retailers’ concerns regarding space availability and packing efficiency to ramp up order processing procedures.

GEODIS enhances its environmental policy with an eco-design approach to its logistics solutions

To help its customers reduce their environmental footprint, GEODIS has developed an eco-design approach that integrates the impacts of its logistics services. GEODIS is one of the first logisticians in the world to be audited. Its eco-design methodology has been validated by the French association for quality improvement and management (AFAQ[1]).

Implemented by GEODIS for its Contract Logistics line of business, the eco-design methodology aims to identify the environmental impact of a logistics service at all stages of its life cycle and propose areas for improvement. GEODIS provides its customers with a detailed carbon assessment as well as effective reductions in, or even avoidance of CO2 emissions. These options help to minimize energy consumption, improve waste management and optimize the use of buildings, equipment and transport flows. For one of its clients, GEODIS developed an approach to reduce CO2 emissions by 51%, i.e., approximately 2,250 tons of CO2 less over five years, using a system that combines the use of photovoltaic panels and LED lamps, recycling process, optimization of space and equipment, and a BREEAM-certified building.

This unique approach (only 21% of companies use the eco-approach to develop products and services according to ADEME[2]), addresses the entire life cycle of the logistics service. This is in line with the definition of eco-design, which “consists of integrating the environment from the design stage of a product or service, and during all stages of its life cycle” (AFNOR, 2004).

GEODIS’s approach is comprehensive. It incorporates CO2 emissions related to the total service life cycle.  From the initial sales and tender stage, it takes into account all the assets necessary through to the completion of the project, including the final site closure phase.

The GEODIS engineers in charge of designing logistics offers are all trained in the eco-design approach to anticipate CO2 emissions before a project even begins. GEODIS customers have access to a comparison between a standard logistics offer and the “eco-designed” proposal, which they can use in their own carbon assessment.

The methodology, based on GEODIS’s expertise and data in sustainable development, has been audited by an external auditing firm and validated by AFAQ.

GEODIS expands its range of eLogistics services with the addition of returns management

As part of a dedicated range of e-Commerce services, GEODIS now offers a complete product returns management service. Thanks to GEODIS, retailers and e-merchants will be able to benefit from an end-to-end technological and logistical solution covering the entire value chain, from order orchestration to product returns management, available throughout Europe.

In response to the growing popularity of online shopping and a substantial increase in product returns, GEODIS has developed an integrated range of reverse logistics services that combine the power of digital technology with its international transport network and its expertise in logistics (managing 8.7 million m2 of warehousing space worldwide). This turnkey GEODIS solution is designed to relieve retailers and e-retailers of the operational management of product returns. It includes the declaration of consumer returns, product collection and identification, and delivery of the items back into stock.

Using this platform, the consumer selects the product to be returned and the reason for the return and chooses the method of pick-up. GEODIS services are responsible for collecting products and transporting them to the warehouse, as well as the entire process of control, sorting, repackaging for dispatch and where appropriate recycling, according to the principles of the circular economy. All these logistics operations are prescribed in accordance with the return policy defined beforehand. Both retailers and consumers can track the progress of the return request and the status of the refund in real time.

For merchants connected to such e-Commerce platforms as Shopify, Woocommerce, Wizishop or Prestashop, among others, the digital platform can be integrated instantly.

Global logistics player eyes strong growth in Asia Pacific (APAC) through strategic expansion of its fixed schedule network

GEODIS, a global leading transport and logistics services provider, is extending its AirDirect service with the addition of a twice weekly flight routed London Stansted (STN)/Amsterdam (AMS)/ Hong Kong (HKG)/STN/AMS. With the new schedule coming into effect from October, GEODIS’ APAC customers will have access to almost 80 percent of European destinations within 24 hours. This new investment underscores the company’s enhanced focus on the APAC region and its commitment to serve a greater range of business verticals in Asian markets. GEODIS will in part use its new A330-300 full freighter aircraft to operate this rotation between Europe and Asia.

As manufacturing in Asia continues to be the backbone of several key European business sectors, the requirement for exporters to secure reliable and well-priced freight forwarding services has become even more critical through the disruption brought about by the COVID-19 outbreak. The new route launch comes on the heels of the introduction of GEODIS’ Shanghai to Guadalajara flight in March this year, which has improved cargo connectivity to the West Coast of the Americas. GEODIS also continues with its dedicated service from Hong Kong to Guadalajara.

The new flight will also help expand GEODIS’ operations in Asia with increased connectivity, aiming to build on its existing customer base consisting of pharmaceutical, high tech, and retail clients. The new service will offer all the existing AirDirect options of AirFast, AirFlex, and AirSave services with much needed guaranteed capacity.

GEODIS invests in building a sustainable 130,000m2 Logistics Campus in The Netherlands

Global leading supply chain operator GEODIS is acquiring 21.5 hectares of land at Trade Port Noord from Greenport Venlo. Here, GEODIS plans to build one of the most sustainable logistics facilities in the Netherlands: a 130,000m2 contract logistics site servicing customers from various vertical sectors and designed to accommodate the current growth in e-commerce.

The Venlo region is one of Europe’s prime spots for logistics activities, located near the Dutch border with Germany, acting as a link between the nearby air and seaports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp with the major industrial markets of the continent.

“Trade Port Noord has excellent connections to the European multimodal infrastructure via road, river, rail, ocean and air. This makes it the ideal location for GEODIS to operate cargo flows for international clients, and to manage their warehousing and logistics needs utilizing our European distribution network – and to expand our Benelux-Germany-Poland corridor at the same time”, says Marie-Christine Lombard, CEO of GEODIS.

The construction of the new facility will start in 2022. GEODIS is committed to protect the environment and ensure the well-being of its employees.This new build will be designed to standards aimed at a BREEAM “outstanding” certification, and a WELL Silver certification. BREEAM is a world-known sustainability assessment method for buildings[i]; WELL is an international standard for creating spaces that enhance human health and well-being[ii].

“Health and safety of our employees have always been our first priority – already before the COVID 19 pandemic, and still today”, says Marie-Christine Lombard. “In the same spirit, the GEODIS logistics campus in Venlo will be one of the very few logistics buildings in the world with a WELL certification.”

To ensure all standards for the desired certifications will be in place, GEODIS has involved real estate services and investment company CBRE, advising on the land acquisition and project management.

GEODIS offers its customers sustainable fuels for air and sea transport

Already utilized in its road freight operations, GEODIS is now offering customers the opportunity to benefit from alternative fuel solutions in the air and at sea, all around the world. The objective: to contribute to the reduction of the CO2 emissions of their shipments.

The development of biofuel is one of the strategic paths being pursued by GEODIS to meet the challenge of carbon neutrality. With these new solutions for air and sea freight, we offer our customers an additional way to decarbonize their entire supply chain,” says Marie-Christine Lombard, GEODIS Chief Executive Officer.

The aviation (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and maritime (Sustainable Marine Fuel) fuels, derived from non-fossil sources, are produced using food and agricultural waste (mainly cooking oil). Their use allows for a massive reduction in CO2 emissions over the cycle from production to fuel consumption; at least 80% for air and 90% for sea transport, along with a reduction in other pollutants.

“Biofuels are currently the most effective way to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of transport activities,” says Philippe de Carné, GEODIS Executive Vice President Business Development, CSR & Innovation.

These alternative fuel sources are classified as ‘insetting’ or ‘integrated carbon reduction’ because they occur within the means of transport’s own value chain, unlike conventional carbon offsetting, such as solar panels, wind turbines and tree plantations, which are not involved directly in the operational sphere.

“These ‘insetting’ solutions offer our customers the ability to directly impact the global carbon output linked to their shipments by reducing it significantly,” adds Philippe de Carné. Using a ‘Book & Claim’ approach, each customer can opt for a as high a level of contribution as they wish, covering up to 100% of the CO2 emitted by the transport of their shipment.”

First GEODIS Aircraft is Taking Off

GEODIS upgrades its AirDirect services between Europe, the United States and Asia with its own leased A330-300 full freighter aircraft. Operating between Amsterdam, London, Chicago and Hong Kong, and proudly flying under the GEODIS brand, the aircraft will also serve the China – Europe route for the peak season. The first flight will take off in September.

The Freighter, which GEODIS is leasing for several years, will be integrated into the GEODIS AirDirect global schedule. Initially, it will fly three times per week between Amsterdam/London and Chicago (AMS/ STN–ORD) and will additionally be deployed on weekly rotations connecting Amsterdam and Hong Kong (AMS–HKG). GEODIS is offering the entire range of its air freight products–GEODIS AirFast, AirSave and AirFlex–on the AirDirect flights. The Freighter will also provide the opportunity and flexibility to operate dedicated full capacity flights for its customers when required.

Our AirDirect service has operated more than 650 air charter flights so far across Asia, Europe, North and Latin America in order to secure capacity for our customer shipments worldwide. The experience gained from these operations has led to the decision to charter our own GEODIS Freighter. DELPHI Technologies renews its trust in GEODIS for another 6 years

DELPHI Technologies (a brand owned by BorgWarner Inc.) and GEODIS in Poland have extended their collaboration until 2027. This new agreement that includes the expansion of warehouse space in Wrocław (Poland) will allow an increase of 50% in volumes handled.

Delphi Technologies is providing products for sophisticated vehicle systems with leading service solutions for the aftermarket. With new markets, in addition to the existing ones served in Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and North Africa, Delphi Technologies needs a partner to support its growth. The agreement with GEODIS provides an increase in warehouse space in Wrocław by 5,000 square meters by 2027, resulting in a total of 20,000 sqm.

GEODIS in Poland will also continue to provide DELPHI Technologies Aftermarket additional support covering logistics optimization, customs services, return logistics, consumables purchasing, master data updates (part dimension scanning), as well as labelling or packing to meet specific legal or customer requirements.

The five-year old cooperation between GEODIS and the DELPHI Technologies’ Aftermarket business began with the launch of a regional distribution center in Wrocław in 2017. The productive relationship over the period, combined with the quality of the service and the prime location of the warehouse facility, contributed to DELPHI’s decision to extend the contract.
