GEODIS opens a new Parisian Distribution Centre serving the City of tomorrow

GEODIS has opened a new site in the 12th arrondissement of the French capital. After two years of construction, the new 15,000 m2 depot symbolizes the Group’s determination to strengthen and develop its position in the Paris region. The new facility also underscores GEODIS’ commitment to a cleaner urban distribution, achieved notably by developing the use of logistics bases located in different parts of the capital and using a fleet of electric vehicles.

After two years of preparation, GEODIS has opened its Paris-Bercy depot located several meters from the old site, in the 12th arrondissement near Porte de Charenton. GEODIS has invested in this new, more modern facility to have a distribution tool that is better adapted to the environmental expectations of the Paris city community.

Several objectives have inspired the project since its inception in 2011; responding to the customers’ growing demand with the resulting increase in volumes, modernizing an ageing site, and improving working conditions for employees. The aim was also to develop a new environment-friendly distribution model in the capital. GEODIS’ Paris operation relies on distribution bases, referred to as “blue-bases”, each one measuring 1,000 m2 and located in the city centre of Paris. These bases serve as distribution relay points from which clean vehicles adapted to last-mile logistics carry out local deliveries. Two blue-bases – Boulevard Ney in the 18th arrondissement and Bercy in the 12th – are already up and running. Three more – Forum des Halles in the 1st, Invalides in the 7th and Porte de Versailles in the 15th – will complete the strategy over the coming months.

Our new site is both one of a kind and doubly strategic,” says Olivier Melot, Executive Vice President, Distribution & Express, GEODIS. “One of a kind, because taking a clean slate and an empty warehouse, we have designed and implemented an unprecedented network, based on a blue-base system, which is located as close as possible to our Parisian customers. Strategic, because the new development strengthens our position to serve central Paris and validates our urban delivery solution, which will be that demanded by the cities of tomorrow. What’s more, we will be introducing 30 additional electric vehicles in the coming weeks.”

The new 15,000 m2 Parisian site also features two new sorting lines, an overhead line capable of sorting 2,500 parcels an hour and a ground line used for pallets, operating at a rate of 200 pallets an hour. With this new technical equipment, the depot is capable of initiating 3,000 deliveries a day, or 8,400 parcels.

In the long term, to continue boosting service quality, particularly with regards to recipient-customers, this system will be completed by new, environmentally respectful services, such as on-foot deliveries from blue bases, the implementation of a series of pick-up locations, and evening deliveries across the city.

GEODIS rolls out new Digital Solutions to simply Road Transport

26 OCTOBER 2017

LEVALLOIS-PERRET

Neptune enables real-time co-ordination of transport activity, reporting and analysis of key performance indicators, and document archiving.  Neptune is the new web portal which has been developed by GEODIS for its road transport-related activities in order to offer more transparency, agility and simplicity to all those working within the supply chain.

Neptune makes it possible for hauliers and customers to manage all their activities from a single platform in just a few clicks: scheduling collections/deliveries, planning resources, reporting incidents and faults, and accessing digitalised transport documents are all part of the functionality being introduced.

“GEODIS’ vision is to be a growth partner for our clients” explains Olivier Royer, Executive Vice President Road Transport. “In this context, the digitalization of our activities aims to simplify the daily life of our customers and our partners.”

The Neptune portal works within the framework of Zenith, the transport management system (TMS), which GEODIS has been developing since 2003 and into which the new mobile application, Zenmob feeds in real time. Available on Android and IOS platforms in 8 languages, Zenmob is available to the 18,000 GEODIS employees in Europe. By simply entering the delivery order reference, the application can immediately share the delivery status, report any faults, add images showing events of non-compliance, and will therefore significantly reduce the number of telephone exchanges or texts required involving parties in the transport chain.

“Modern technology has created a new dynamic to improve our methods of working”, states Olivier Royer. “The digitalisation of functions enables us to share intelligent transport data and so influence the better organisation of the entire supply chain. The combination of big data, artificial intelligence and geolocation are at the heart of our current and future thinking and aimed consistently at further simplifying our customers’ activities; guaranteeing them new sources of productivity.”

From the Neptune portal, customers can also access the new reporting tool, Scorecard, developed by the GEODIS design engineering department. Being fully-customisable, this tool enables the user to analyse all the relevant indicators in order to monitor the performance of GEODIS controlled transport activities. Finally, in order to meet the ever-increasing administrative and legal obligations of its customers, GEODIS has wholly digitalised the management of all transport documents, which are now also accessible through the Neptune portal.

GEODIS experiments Connected Glasses in its Warehouse in Cologne

171019 Pick by Vision IMG_4092

GEODIS is implementing augmented reality solutions for its logistics operations in its warehouse in Cologne. The implemented solution, based on the Picavi’s “Pick-By-Vision” technology, aims at easing order preparation processes for the warehouse’s employees.

Equipped with data glasses, employees receive visual information into their visual field. This solution thus provides employees with all the information they need for order picking or loading. GEODIS has initially equipped twelve employees with this system.

The data glasses use visual displays to guide the order pickers through the current picking order. They inform the pickers in advance of the loading unit (pallet or carton) which need to be taken along, refer to the units to be picked as well as the item level and the storage location. If required, images of the products can be imported into the field of view. At the end of the picking run, the data glasses guide employees to the correct storage location in the outbound area and the picking order is automatically completed in the warehouse management system (WMS).

The use of data glasses gives employees more freedom to move compared to the use of handheld scanners while providing more detailed information on the type and appearance of the units to be picked. This increases the productivity and eliminates potential sources of error. The data glasses can be used for taking pictures of the loaded pallets after the order has been completed, which ensures a complete loading documentation. Thanks to the precise and strict process, the team achieves high picking performance, better quality and complete documentation. A simple and very flexible parameterizing process- linked to the WMS – enables the solution to easily adapt any changes in the warehouse’s organization.

In addition, Pick-by-Vision delivers another added value: “The scope and presentation of the relevant information is easily scalable. This means that even new employees without previous knowledge can be trained very quickly. This ensures high quality, even in peak seasons”, says Christian Müller, Area Manager FMCG at GEODIS for Contract Logistics in Germany.

This solution also represents a very good news for our customers which will see an increase of productivity -estimated up to 12% – and will thus benefit from the use of this innovative technology in their supply chain” declares Bernhard Heimann, Director of Operations at GEODIS for Contract Logistics in Germany.

After conducting several tests with different solutions, GEODIS has chosen the Pick-by-Vision technology developed by Picavi. If the expected results are confirmed, GEODIS plans to deploy Pick-by-Vision at other locations in Germany.

GEODIS highly rated for its Corporate Social Responsibility approach (CSR)

The collaborative platform EcoVadis has awarded GEODIS a score of 68/100, after analyzing its entire Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. EcoVadis assesses companies on environmental, social, ethical and supply chain issues. With this score, it has placed the Group among the best in its overall rankings.

The EcoVadis report describes the GEODIS’ CSR approach as “Advanced”.  It also considers the strategy adopted by GEODIS to be based on “a structured CSR approach, quantified commitments, tangible action on all issues, detailed information on the implementation of these actions and precise CSR reporting, as well as use of performance indicators”. The score obtained this year is the highest ever obtained by GEODIS since its first voluntary participation in the EcoVadis assessment. This result underlines a continuous improvement in its CSR processes and actions. It also reflects the success of extensive work conducted over several years on CSR topics within the Group.

“GEODIS develops innovative responses to environmental and social challenges through the collective day-to-day efforts of its employees.  These efforts promote sustainable development and are rooted firmly in the business ethics of our Lines of Business, their processes and organizations,” says Marie-Christine Lombard, CEO of GEODIS. “Our ambition is to position ourselves as the sustainable growth partner of our customers.”

“The assessment by EcoVadis is a voluntary undertaking that we adopted in order to satisfy our customers, who were seeking a clearer picture of our CSR approach,” continues Régis Lesieux, Business Excellence & CSR Vice President, GEODIS. “Just as we ask our suppliers to have their CSR policies assessed, we want to provide our customers with a precise indicator of our own performance in this field. The fact that our CSR approach has been praised by EcoVadis – particularly with respect to our commitment to fighting climate change – is a real source of pride for us and underlines the commitment of our workforce.”

The EcoVadis assessment is based on 21 criteria covering four areas of activity: environment, social issues, ethics/fair business practices and supply chain. The assessment of the GEODIS’ approach can be broken down as follows:

Environment: In this area, EcoVadis highlighted the level carbon reporting provided by GEODIS for its customers and the regular renewal of its fleet and fleet equipment along with initiatives to reduce environmental impact (CO2, noise, waste, etc.).

– Social:  The Group primarily owes its good results in this field to its many initiatives to promote employee health and safety: OHSAS 18001 certification, regular training for drivers on health and safety in the workplace and regular health checks.

Business ethics: EcoVadis underlined the significant measures deployed by GEODIS in the field of IT security in order to protect its data. It also praised the updating of the GEODIS Code of Ethics, the quality of whistle-blowing procedures and the internal audits relating to the fight against corruption.

– Supply chain: EcoVadis identified a number of strong points manifested by GEODIS, primarily the inclusion of environmental and social criteria in contracts, as well as supplier assessments, particularly with respect to vehicle acquisition.

EcoVadis is the first collaborative platform providing sustainability ratings and performance improvement tools for global supply chains. Over 20,000 companies use EcoVadis to reduce risk, drive innovation and foster transparency and trust within business partnerships.

GEODIS transports Siemens turbines across the Andes mountains

Siemens has engaged GEODIS to transport some 400 heavy loads from three different continents to Bolivia. This involves transits through the Panama C170913 SIEMENS BOLIVIA (1) FINALanal and over the Andes mountains under extreme weather conditions and at altitudes of up to 4,680 meters. The loads include Siemens combined cycle power generation equipment intended for three Bolivian thermo‑electric plants located in Del Sur, Warnes and Entre Rios. GEODIS’ scope of services includes ocean freight, port handling, vessel loading and discharge, transit documentation and road freight, including all permits.

The first two turbines were loaded in April and originated in Sweden, where they were manufactured at the Siemens’ Finspang Industrial Turbomachinery facility. Weighing 170 tons in total, they were embarked on a heavy-lift ship at Norrköping for the 14,000 kilometers sea voyage to the port of Arica in Chile. All materials arrive there, including turbines, heat recovery steam generators and generator sets.

After discharge in Arica, the equipment from Siemens is transported by road to the sites in Bolivia; specially arranged trucks hauling the material over 1,800 kilometers to their destination. In total, GEODIS will manage 94 heavy lifts of up to 160 tons each by the time the project is completed in April 2019. The poorly developed road network between Chile and Bolivia, rough terrain and extreme weather conditions are the main challenges for the GEODIS teams managing the operation.

According to Peter Anetsberger, GEODIS Regional Segment Leader for Power at Industrial Projects in Europe, “this mission has a variety of challenges for our experts to tackle. The project has a tight delivery schedule and the teams have to deal with a wide range of shipments originating in Germany, Sweden, Czech Republic, Italy, Indonesia, Brazil and China. Plus, we had to undertake roadway construction on the transit route through the Andes. Despite these constraints, we are confident of overcoming the challenges and achieving the target set by Siemens.

In total, GEODIS will transport 14 industrial gas turbines, 11 steam turbines and further power plant equipment to convert the three plants for combined cycle operation. As a result of the complex reconstruction project, Siemens will increase the power generating capacity of Bolivia’s National Interconnected System by 66 percent or more than one gigawatt. The project will provide reliable energy supply for the local population and lay the foundation for possible electricity export to neighboring countries in the future.

GEODIS intern program promotes innovation

SEPTEMBER 21, 2017

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY

Launched by the Poughkeepsie (NY) office, the global internship program during summer 2017 was aimed at promoting continuous innovation. By launching this project, the leadership team of GEODIS fostered innovative ideas for the company while giving the opportunity for local interns to collaborate with their colleagues around the world.

During the summer, a team of six interns in Poughkeepsie hosted video conferences with similar teams in Guadalajara (Mexico), Endicott (NY) and Berlin (Germany). Each team worked on an innovative project to be considered for implementation at the conclusion of the internship program.

Kick-off for this think tank type “innovation lab” in Poughkeepsie took place earlier in spring 2017, via a video conference with a GEODIS team in Guadalajara (Mexico) and Luca Silipo, Chief Economist who runs GEODIS’ World Lab based in Berlin. Preliminary discussions on industry trends and current innovations being developed with GEODIS took place.

The Poughkeepsie team completed mini projects throughout the summer based on professional development, business excellence and corporate values. The interns, along with members of the leadership team, also had visited a ‘fabrication lab’ to develop their practical management skills.

“This summer’s think tank demonstrated a real commitment to innovation and disruption, not only did it give the interns an opportunity to share their perspective and experiences but it also instigated a change in our culture – where we embrace new ideas and assess the future of supply chain” said Eric St. Amand, Vice President, Americas for the Supply Chain Optimization Line of Business.

Premium Car Manufacturer trusts GEODIS to manage in Korea one of its largest Distribution Centers in the World

In April 2017, BMW Korea opened a new Regional Parts Distribution Center for BMW, MINI and motorcycle spare parts in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, 70 kilometers south of Seoul. GEODIS was entrusted with the logistics of this over 50,000 sqm site, one of BMW’s biggest Regional Distribution Center in the world.

On this new site, GEODIS annually manages over one million order lines and handles up auto parts deliveries across South Korea. The Group deals with thousands automotive parts stored, more than twice the volume compared to the previous facility.

According to Mark Ellis, Automotive Market Line Director for GEODIS: “We were chosen for our automotive and warehousing expertise and our flexible logistics solutions. The facility aims to satisfy the Korea’s BMW vehicle owners with timely auto parts delivery across the country.”

The new distribution center is within two hours’ drive from Incheon International Airport (airfreight inbound). The seafreight arrives at Busan port. Furthermore, it is also close to highways, which is expected to shorten the auto parts delivery time. The center is made up of several buildings, including a main warehouse and two warehouses for inflammables and explosives.

GEODIS manages out-of-gauge refinery modules the multimodal way for Kinetics Technology

Lotos Refinery DSC_7316
The Industrial Projects activity of GEODIS is managing out-of-gauge shipments for a major oil & gas project for the international process engineering contractor Kinetics Technology (KT), part of the Maire Tecnimont Group.

This oil and gas sector project involves shipments of oversize columns from across Europe to the Lotos Refinery in Gdansk, Poland where they will be assembled. GEODIS’ Industrial Projects team in Italy secured the contract for the project early this year and started operations in May. The final shipment which completes the project is scheduled for the summer.

One of the principle components of the overall move is a 310-ton column which was transported by barge on the Ems River in Germany to Rotterdam. From there it was trans-shipped onto a coastal vessel, making its way to the refinery’s jetty in Gdansk; here it was unloaded with the aid of a floating crane.

“This was a great example of intermodal transport success, demonstrating close collaboration between our network of teams in Italy, Germany and Poland.” commented GEODIS’ Project Manager, Mario Scannapieco.

Further shipments by break-bulk vessels are now in progress, once more arranged by the GEODIS team in Italy.  Three large columns originating in Northern Italy and Spain on arrival at the Port of Gdansk will be transferred to barges for on-carriage to the Lotos refinery.

GEODIS unveils its 2017 Supply Chain Worldwide survey

Through this initiative, GEODIS shares the latest insights about Supply Chain challenges that face market stakeholders and shows where they feel potential for improvement can be found. The survey’s findings were presented at the 2017 Transport Logistic trade fair in Munich during a GEODIS conference entitled: “Insights to Supply Chain Trends, Challenges & Innovation”.

In the wake of globalization and rampant digitalization, commercial trade flows have evolved dramatically. Both the volume and the scope of services managed within Supply Chain have reached unprecedented levels.

In this context, 70% of the survey’s respondents say their Supply Chain is either ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ complex. They also emphasize the strategic position it has reached in their overall organization. Supply Chain has become more customer-focused and mostly considered as a lever to win competitive advantage. The survey also confirms that achieving extended visibility of their Supply Chain is one of the major objectives of respondents in order to efficiently manage it.

Moreover, the GEODIS’ 2017 Supply Chain worldwide survey offers a broad assessment of the solutions identified to tackle future challenges, such as organizational best practices, technology trends, KPIs monitoring and outsourcing behaviors. For example, it is noteworthy, that the best performers, in terms of EBIT, have positioned Supply Chain management at Board level or at C-level.

Overall, the survey offers clear testimony that companies know where the pain points are and the objectives they wish to attain but the pathways to success are still many and long.

Scope and methodology of the GEODIS’ 2017 Supply Chain worldwide survey

The insights documented in this survey are based on the responses of 623 professionals in 17 countries from various functions (Supply chain, Finance, Operations, Marketing, Strategy, Information Technology…) and management levels (C-level, Top management executives, Directors…). All the respondents have a direct link with Supply Chain operations and issues on a regular basis.
