“K” LINE’s Participation in Joint Study to Explore Ammonia as Marine Fuel in Singapore

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (hereinafter “K” LINE) is pleased to announce that, effective as from today, we have participate in the feasibility study jointly conducted since March 2021 by and among A.P. Moller – Maersk, Fleet Management Limited, Keppel Offshore & Marine, Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, Sumitomo Corporation, and American Bureau of Shipping (*1), with the aim to establish a ship-to-ship based ammonia bunkering at the Port of Singapore, the largest bunkering port in the world (hereinafter “the Study”). Memorandum of Understanding was executed by and among the 8 companies, including Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore who has also decided to participate in the Study, at a ceremony held today during the occasion of Singapore Maritime Week 2022.

Emitting zero CO2 when combusted, ammonia has been considered as one of promising options among various alternative marine fuels to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the shipping industry, which is in line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) strategy to achieve reduction of GHG emission by 50% in 2050 compared to the levels in 2008.

The Study aims to cover the entire end-to-end supply chain of ammonia bunkering, design of ammonia bunkering vessels, as well as related supply chain infrastructure. Relevant government agencies and experts in Singapore will be engaged in working towards the standardization of safe operation and regulations. Each partner will contribute to the Study within the scope set in line with their business domain.

We have long experience in handling of ammonia on board the vessel through technical management of ammonia carriers. In addition, we have know-how and expertise in the ship management service of bunkering vessel conducted within the regulatory framework and guidelines in Singapore which has been acquired through the management of Singapore’s first LNG bunkering vessel.

We believe that our engagement in the Study on the grounds of these expertise embodies the initiatives designated under our long-term environmental guideline – “K” LINE Environmental Vision 2050 (*2) – including “decarbonization of “K” LINE” and “promoting and supporting decarbonization of society”; hence we decided to participate in the Study. While watching trends in the development of international regulations concerning ammonia as marine fuel, we are planning to study ammonia-fueled vessels in more detail.

“K” LINE Group Open its First Finished-Vehicle Terminal Operation in Japan

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) and Daito Corporation will launch “K” LINE Group’s first finished-vehicle terminal in Japan,at Yokohama Daikoku C-4 Terminal from April 2022.

“K” LINE Group leases the terminal from Yokohama Port Terminal Corporation (YPC) and operates it at Yokohama port, which handles one of the largest volumes of finished vehicles in Japan. The terminal is capable of handling a wide variety of products, including new and used vehicles, construction machineries, and break-bulk cargoes, and can also be used as a transshipment base for finished vehicles to meet a variety of needs. Thus, the new terminal will contribute to optimize the handling of vehicles in Yokohama port as a whole by welcoming vessels other than those operated by “K” LINE.

We also aim to create an environmentally friendly terminal by introducing LED lighting for night time operation, EVs for terminal vehicles, and the use of electricity generated from renewable energy sources. At the same time, we will strive to improve safety, the environment, and quality, which are important issues for the Group, by making active use of digital technologies such as AI and IoT, including the automation of entry and exit gates and the introduction of advanced terminal management systems, and by creating a high value-added terminal.

“K” LINE has Joined an International Think Tank “Global CCS Institute”

~Promoting the development of CCS-related businesses to realize a carbon-neutral society~

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) has joined an International Think Tank “Global CCS Institute” (GCCSI). GCCSI is advancing worldwide deployment of CCS (Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage) technology which is necessary for the realization of a carbon neutral society.

CCS is a series of technologies for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from power plants, refineries, and factories instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. The captured CO2 is then injected deep into the ground at a carefully selected and safe site, where it is stored. The CCS is a climate change technology that can achieve significant CO2 emission reductions thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions which is key to the realization of a carbon neutral society in 2050.

“K” LINE is actively promoting CCS-related businesses. In the demonstration test of an onboard CO2 capture system, “K” LINE successfully separated and captured CO2 from the exhaust gas emitted from the vessel for the first time in the world. The result of the demonstration was achieved with the planned performance. (Note 1) In addition, “K” LINE is participating the demonstration project on CO2 ship transportation by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization(NEDO) and conducting research and development that will contribute to the long-distance and large-scale transportation of CO2 in the future. The liquefied CO2 carrier for the demonstration test is being built as the world’s first demonstration vessel for the CCUS project, and “K” LINE is participating in the development of CO2 shipping technology by utilizing our technology and knowledge of safe operation and safe cargo handling of liquefied gas carriers which we have cultivated over many years. (Note2)

GCCSI was established by the Australian government in 2009 to promote the use of CCS technology worldwide, and currently has members from all over the world, including government, industries, and research organizations. GCCSI conducts surveys on the latest trends in CCS business and technology and holds subcommittee meetings to discuss the launch of international CCS projects in the future.

“K” LINE will keep abreast of the international CCS development and will accelerate its consideration of participation in CCS related business by joining GCCSI. We will continue to contribute to the realization of a carbon neutral society based on the “K” LINE Environmental Vision 2050 (Note 3).

Global CCS Institute Outline
