In introducing these bright young professionals FIATA President Babar Badat said, “Encouraging more young professionals to join the FIATA community has always been a priority for me. I am encouraged again to see these excellent candidates presenting dissertations that cover a wide range of logistic subjects, which demonstrate the challenges that forwarders face every day and the customized solutions they are able to offer. My sincere congratulations to the four regional winners who are ….”

Europe – Mrs Evgeniya Khokhlova Russia (FAR)

Africa/ Middle East – Mr Enos Chapra Zimbabwe (SFAAZ)

Americas – Ms Rachael van Harmelen Canada (CIFFA)

Asia Pacific – Mr Phillip Burgess New Zealand (CBAFF)

TT Club has had the honour to sponsor the competition throughout its twenty plus years of existence and Mike Yarwood, TT Club’s Senior Loss Prevention Executive and Chairman of the Award Steering Committee commented, “In the current challenging global trade environment, where supply chains are under increasing pressure to adapt quickly to regulatory, political and economic pressures, we at TT Club believe the training and professional advancement of young freight operators must be paramount.”

This award aims to contribute to the development of quality professionals and reward young talent.”

At the FIATA World Congress in Cape Town (1st – 5th October), hosted by the South African Association of Freight Forwarders, the four regional winners will be invited to

present their dissertations to the Award Steering Committee, the final judging will take place and the winner of the YIFFYA for 2019 will be announced.

The prize to be awarded to the winner principally consists of practical and academic training, including a week based at one of TT Club’s regional centres in London, Hong Kong or New Jersey plus a week in TT Club’s Head Office in London. Additionally, one year’s subscription to the International Transport Journal (ITJ) is provided to all four regional winners.

The entries this year were, as ever, of a high standard and drew from a wide range of dissertation topics. The work of the entrants demonstrated the complexity of processes carried out within the global supply chain and the logistics skills required to serve it. Both FIATA and TT Club wish to thank all those individuals who entered this year’s competition and also to acknowledge their employers and national freight forwarding associations for the enthusiasm and commitment they have shown to on-going training with the international logistics and freight forwarding sector.

Global Cargo Theft Intelligence Report for 2018 Issued

TT Club and BSI have issued the second edition of their report on global cargo theft, the first to cover a full year.  Highlighted findings include: theft from road vehicles once more accounts for the highest proportion at 84%; Slash and Grab the largest type of cargo theft at 26% globally but with significant regional variations; the combination of food, beverage, alcohol and tobacco making up the most common commodity group at 34% and South America topping the regional analysis of median value for each theft at $77,000

Leading international transport and logistics insurer, TT Club and global provider of supply chain intelligence, BSI produced their first regular Semi-Annual Global Cargo Theft Intelligence and Advisory Report late last year but this second edition is the first to cover a complete twelve-month (2018) period.

TT Club’s Mike Yarwood, explains the rationale behind the initiative, “Our report brings together threat and intelligence data from BSI’s supply chain security country risk intelligence tool, SCREEN and TT Club’s insurance risk management and loss prevention insights. It demonstrates the shared goal we possess of educating supply chain professionals in the threat of cargo theft across the globe. We aim to engage in a proactive approach in preventing cargo crime and also minimising the financial loss resulting from cargo crime.”

The report, which is available as a free download https://www.ttclub.com/loss-prevention/publications/tt-club-bsi-cargo-theft-report-2018/ analyses cargo theft by modality, theft type (modus operandi), commodities targeted and the value of losses across the major regions of the world.  Please refer to the Infographic attached.

While the research found a consistency across the regions in terms of the most common modality involved (road transport) and in the commodities targeted, there was some variation in the median value of the cargo affected.  This ranged from just under $19,000 in Asia, to around $60,000 in both Europe and North America to a high of $77,000 in South America.

The methods used in the majority of cases, however varied significantly across the regions.  The global aggregation resulted in Slash and Grab at 26% topping the list, with Theft from Vehicle (19%) and Hijacking (17%) making up second and third spot.  In North and South America Hijacking was the most common method at 37% and 52% respectively.  In Asia methodology was quite different with Theft from a Facility being the most common, at 43% compared with just 19% from Hijacking.

The report includes several pieces of loss prevention advice to counter the identified threats. The risk mitigation advisory sections have been co-authored by BSI’s Advisory Supply Chain Security team and the TT Club’s claims and loss prevention team.

Yarwood goes on to say “In particular we would wish to emphasise The Insider Threat.  As security measures become more sophisticated and widespread in practice, criminal organisations are increasingly recruiting employees of targeted companies to gain data, cargo information, delivery routes and destinations and access to IT systems. Due diligence in recruiting and managing staff is paramount. In general full or part-time salaried staff are less of a security risk than sub-contractors.

TT Club announces excellent financial results for 2018 and A.M. Best affirms A- (Excellent) rating

TT Club, the leading internationaltransport and logistics insurance provider, today announces its financial results for the year ended 31 December 2018, and A.M. Best affirms its A- (Excellent) rating

Highlights:

  • $195.0 million gross earned premiums (2017: $181.8 million)
  • $16.5 million surplus for the year (2017: $7.3 million)
  • Total assets of $619.3 million (2017: $597.6 million)
  • Total surplus and reserves $209.5 million (2017: $193.1 million)
  • 2018 financial year combined ratio of 87% (2017: 97%)
  • A.M. Best affirms financial strength rating  as  A- (Excellent)

Chairman of TT Club, Ulrich Kranich, said:

“It has been a good year for the Club, although 2018 was another difficult year for the insurance industry. The global broker Aon has assessed the 2017 and 2018 years as the costliest back to back years for insured losses. Such levels of losses have not had the expected positive impact on pricing. This, coupled with the continued availability of capital, has impacted the pricing of risk, the ability of insurers to recover their outgoings and balance their books to the required level of profitability.

“Major hurricane-related industry loss events in 2017, did not significantly impact the Club and I am pleased to say this was repeated in 2018. The Club was involved with two large events ‘Maersk Honam’ and Hurricane Michael. The gross cost of Hurricane Michael to the Club is just over US$ 5 million, which should be extremely reassuring to Members as an insight into the Club’s management of its exposures.

“In spite of the premium environment being on the whole challenging, the Club’s premium income grew in 2018. The volumes declared by Members were higher than in recent years, new business was good and retention remained high. Notably, premium growth was achieved without the addition of single large accounts and the balanced growth targeted and achieved in recent years has continued.

“The growth in the number of policyholders, reducing average premiums per policyholder, has resulted in a good level of financial stability enabling the Club to focus on providing service to Members and brokers and assisting the industry with loss prevention.

“Claims performance generally, aside from the major events, was as expected for the 2018 policy year. Claims for the prior years performed significantly better than expectations. The Board manages the Club’s finances prudently, particularly in setting claims reserves. The expectation is that claims levels overall will improve as they develop. Positive development in 2018 exceeded expectations and is the major cause of the result of this year.

“For investment markets, 2018 was a challenging year, particularly in Q4 when equity markets fell substantially. The Club was budgeting to make a return of 2%, which was up on recent years and predicated in interest rates in the US increasing. The Club returned 1.32%, which, while below budget, was a good return given the Club’s portfolio contains a portion of equities in order to maintain the right balance between risk and return.

“The Club’s surplus for the year is US$ 16 million, and the Club’s total surplus and reserves have broken through the US$ 200 million barrier and stand at US$ 209 million. As announced on 23 May, the AM Best A- rating has been maintained, which is testament to the Club’s financial performance as well as the Board’s strategic vision and prudent management.”

An official announcement from A.M. Best outlined TT Club’s rating reflected the “balance sheet strength” which “is underpinned by risk-adjusted capitalisation that is at the strongest level”, as well as “prudent reserving practices and a conservative investment strategy”. The announcement also stated TT Club “recorded a strong underwriting result” in 2018.

ICHCA invites submissions for 3rd TT Club Innovation in Safety Award

ICHCA International, the global cargo handling NGO association, has launched the 3rd TT Club Innovation in Safety Award and invites submissions from all involved in cargo handling and logistics who has shown a demonstrable improvement in operational safety

20 May 2019 –  The Award will be presented to the winning entrant by Heike Deggim, Director of the Maritime Safety Division at the International Maritime Organization at ICHCA’s international conference in Malta this November. The Award aims to highlight the importance of safety at a time of increased operational demands on cargo handling infrastructure and operations worldwide. The Award champions and celebrates the many companies and individuals around the world who are 100% dedicated to ‘making it safe’ every day. Equally, it acknowledges and fosters innovation to improve safety in cargo operations and logistics.

The 2nd Award was won in 2017 by Hapag Lloyd for its Cargo Patrol system.  This innovation is an industry-leading attempt to reduce fraudulent cargo declarations that obscure the true identity of dangerous goods transported around the globe. Entries for the 2017 award were numerous and varied, and the judges were pleased also to award a ‘Highly Commended’ prize to Safety Ammo for its RFID-based safety solution, developed with DP World Brisbane, to minimise the dangers faced by workers who physically handle twistlocks on the underside of containers on the waterfront.

The full report from the 2017 Award, including details of all entries submitted, has been published and is available to download for free here.

Both ICHCA International and TT Club have a fundamental commitment to risk reduction throughout the supply chain and, in particular, to safety within cargo handling operations. Promoting such safety advice is paramount to the philosophy of the two organisations and the Award reflects this commitment.

In announcing the opening of the Award entry process for 2019, TT Club Risk Management Director Peregrine Storrs-Fox said, “TT Club has always emphasised the critical nature of loss prevention in its role as a primary supplier of liability and property insurance to those operating in the freight supply chain industry.  As such, we remain dedicated to encouraging safety awareness and are delighted to maintain our support of this joint initiative with ICHCA.   This award aims to tease out and profile equipment, systems or processes that result in improvements in safety – effectively helping to ensure that workers can return home night by night.  We look forward to examining the wealth of safety innovation that will once more be encouraged by this Award.”

The Award is open to anyone – an individual, team or company – involved in cargo handling or logistics.  Entrants are required to show that a product, idea, solution, process, scheme or other innovation has resulted in a demonstrable improvement to safety.

The deadline for entries is 31 August 2019 and full details of the entry process and judging criteria can be found here.

The Award Ceremony takes place on Tuesday 12 November in Malta after day 1 of ICHCA International’s 20/20 Cargo Vision Conference & Exhibition and is a principal part of the evening’s programme. ICHCA’s flagship event promises to bring together the most influential professionals in cargo handling to discuss the best ways to improve as an industry. Tickets are reduced by 25% for those who book before 25 June here.

TT Club to Present a Way Forward in the Search for a Safer Supply Chain

The Global Liner Shipping Conference to be held over the next two days in Hamburg provides a good opportunity for international freight transport insurer TT Club to continue with its mission to improve the poor safety conditions presently afflicting the shipping of hazardous materials

London & Hamburg, 14th May, 2019

TT Club’s Risk Management Director, Peregrine Storrs-Fox will join with Craig Neame, Partner in global law firm HFW in suggesting a path to improved safety amid the complexity of a container supply chain currently experiencing a serious ship fire, on average every sixty days.

“A lack of understanding of regulations and good practices in the classification, packing and declaration, handling and transport, of dangerous goods pervades all stakeholders within the multimodal environment, through which such high volumes of containers move around the world,” comments Storrs-Fox.  “Increasing awareness of the risks involved in the freight supply chain, strengthening training in good practices and engendering compliance through appropriate enforcement will not be achieved quickly but are tasks that must be faced.  TT Club welcomes the challenge as part of its Cargo Integrity campaign and encourages all in the industry to weigh in.”

At the Conference Craig Neame will outline some of the incendiary incidents that have occurred not just at sea but also in terminals and at berths, both locally in the port of Hamburg as well as around the world.  Consequences of dangerous mishandling can range from explosions, fires and gas clouds to serious injury, loss of life, cargo and assets.

Storrs-Fox will suggest some solutions that are already being employed and the direction that others might take.  These will include the Hazcheck Portalˡ, which seeks to bring information on transport restrictions and regulations together in one place, Cargo Patrol, an attempt to identify undeclared and misdeclared dangerous goods before they are shipped on board and the potential of blockchain technology to eliminate errors in data transmission and interpretation.

Full details of the Conference Agenda over Tuesday and Wednesday 14th and 15th May can be found here Global Liner Shipping

Campaign for Greater Container Safety Must Focus First on Dangerous Goods

The recent reports of container ship fires has once more focussed those in the container supply chain on safety issues related to the incorrect processing of dangerous goods.  The nascent Cargo Integrity campaign initiated by the international transport and logistics insurer, TT Club has as a consequence gained renewed impetus.

20 March, 2019

The recent fire aboard ‘Yantian Express’, details ofthe final judgment on the  ‘MSC Flaminia’ explosion in July 2012, and the ongoing investigation of the ‘Maersk Honan’ fire are currently making headline news.  Then just days ago news has come in of ‘Grande America’ sustaining a container fire in the Bay of Biscay and subsequently sinking.  These perilous incidents not only frequently cost lives, millions of dollars in cargo losses and ship damage, but also significant delays in cargo supply chains amounting to major disruption across numerous industries in these ‘just-in-time’ days.

Yet these incidents are merely the tip of a failing safety iceberg.  Taking the maritime segment of global supply chain, it is estimated that a major container ship fire at sea occurs on average every 60 days, albeit that there have already been four major cargo-related fire incidents in 2019.  Furthermore TT Club’s records indicate that across the intermodal spectrum as a whole, 66% of incidents related to cargo damage can be attributed to poor practice in the overall packing process; that is not just in securing but also in cargo identification, declaration, documentation and effective data transfer. The calculated cost of these claims in the Marine Aviation & Transport (MAT) insurance sector is in excess of USD 500 million a year.

Peregrine Storrs-Fox, TT Club’s Risk Management Director, is leading the Cargo Integrity charge, “We are endeavouring to focus all direct and indirect stakeholders on recognising and doing the right thing,” he states. “One particularly critical aspect of this is the correct declaration and handling of dangerous goods (DG).”

All types of cargo can be mishandled, however wrongly classified, labelled, packed or simply inaccurately identified dangerous commodities bring the greatest potential risk of disaster.  Estimating the degree of failure to comply with best practices in this regard is not straightforward.  ICHCA International, the cargo handling operatives association has calculated that of the 60 million packed containers moved each year, 10% or six million are declared as DG.  Information from published government inspections (which are invariably biased towards declared DG loads) suggests that 20% of these are poorly packed or incorrectly identified.  This translates into 1.3 million potentially unstable DG containers traveling around the world each year.

Storrs-Fox emphasises that this scale of risk is elevated when undeclared or misdeclared DG consignments are considered.  “In these cases an estimate of volumes is more obscure. An indication has been given through the work of one container carrier, Hapag-Lloyd, developing a profiling algorithm to search its booking system for potential misdeclaration of commodities.  Results from Cargo Patrol, when extrapolated to the carryings of all the lines, concludes a reasonable estimate in excess of 150,000 volatile containers in the supply chain each year.”

Container lines in particular are making efforts to mitigate the problem.  The Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS), in which many of the top lines participate, has been active for a number of years and has successfully identified a number of commodities that commonly cause problems during transport – not always limited to those formally identified as dangerous.  TT Club has additionally promoted, together with UK P&I Club and Exis Technologies, the Hazcheck Restrictions Portal, which is designed to identify and streamline the complexity of regulations and protocols imposed by carriers and ports around the world in relation to transporting declared dangerous goods.

However, as Storrs-Fox concludes, “There is very much still to be done in achieving true Cargo Integrity. Our diverse campaign is seeking significant cultural and behavioural change to say the least.  Certain elements may require legislative action, enforcement and inspection and there are great challenges in the field of technological development.  Above all there is a need for all involved in the supply chain to have a realistic perception of risk and a responsible attitude towards liability.”

Best Journalistic Newcomer Award Supported by TT Club

1218 Peregrine Storrs-Fox, TT Club presenting Seahorse Newcomer of the Year to Joseph Stewart, The Naval Architect

Peregrine Storrs-Fox, TT Club presenting the Seahorse Newcomer of the Year Award to Joseph Stewart, The Naval Architect

London, 10th December, 2018

Leading international transport and logistics insurer, TT Club has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Seahorse Club Journalist Awards for some years. The Awards are specifically for media professionals active in the maritime, air cargo and logistics arena. At the 2018 Awards presentation last week, TT Club again sponsored the category that encourages and celebrates new talent in the press ranks of freight transport. The Newcomer of the Year was announced as Joseph Stewart of The Naval Architect.

TT Club’s Risk Management Director, Peregrine Storrs-Fox presenting the award explained the Club’s thinking behind its support for the Award, “Effective communication through the media is an important priority in all walks of life. In this supply chain sector, TT Club wants to recognise and nurture those who have recently chosen to work in related media.”

The award entries were judged by a panel of international media and marketing communications professionals after editors of media outlets in the sector were asked to nominate journalists with no more than two years’ experience who show out-standing potential, demonstrating a clear understanding of the salient issues facing the modern freight transport industry. Furthermore, the editors were urged to identify candidates producing consistently high quality content, providing an informative read and a balanced view on the subject at hand.

This year the calibre of nominees’ writing was extremely high. The judges commented, “The scoring was very close, with the other short-listed entrants being Kate Jones of Carmar Media and Michael Juliano, who writes for Tradewinds quarterly, TW+. However, Joseph really shone as a clear winner. His article encompassed a very rounded discussion of a complex topic, presented with great understanding and a mature writing style.”

Joseph only joined The Naval Architect as Editorial Assistant last December, previously working on books about Lego for Dorling Kindersley, but has quickly developed a firm understanding of the complex issues that dominate discussion in the maritime industry.

As Storrs-Fox concluded, “We are keen to encourage young, enthusiastic and well trained journalists to thrive in the sector. I’m delighted to say that the standard of entrants for the Newcomer category was outstanding and their level of professionalism and balanced reportage was very impressive.”
