Evergreen Line has added new functions to its on-line e-commerce system in response to the unexpected service disruption caused by Hanjin Shipping, a CKYHE alliance member, which has entered rehabilitation proceedings. The service disruption has caused delay to Evergreen Line’s cargoes previously loaded on the Korean carrier’s vessels.

Evergreen’s new functions enable customers to update the status of their cargoes and Hanjin’s vessel positions, including information about anchorage at or sailing to a particular port.  Besides, Evergreen has developed detailed service plans within its own network as an effective substitute to cover the affected services operated by Hanjin.

In addition to the e-commerce enhancement and substitute service solutions, Evergreen Line is conducting fleet adjustment to meet customers’ demand for reliable service.  Evergreen is also working with alliance partners, port authorities, terminal operators and other service providers in the transportation service chain to offer necessary assistance to the customers impacted and endeavor to complete onward carriage where possible.

Evergreen Line has been honored with an environmental protection award by the Port Authority of Los Angeles.  The award has been conferred in recognition of the carrier’s excellent performance in the 2015 Vessel Speed Reduction Program initiated by the largest port in North America.

The program rewards vessel operators’ compliance with a policy of reducing vessel speeds to 12 knots or less within 40 nautical miles of Point Fermin (near the entrance to the Los Angeles harbor). The aim is to minimize the emission of greenhouse gases and thus reduce their influence on air quality in the port community.

In 2015 Evergreen Line’s vessel fleet called 138 times at the port of Los Angeles. The carrier’s voluntary effort to reduce speed is estimated to have lowered emissions by : 4,657 tonnes of CO2; 156 tonnes of NOx; 87 tonnes of SOx and 8 tonnes of particulate matter.

Evergreen Line is committed to safeguarding the environment of marine ecosystem and of port communities within which it operates.  Over the years, the carrier has worked with government agencies, scientific research institutes, cargo owners and relevant parties in the supply chain on various environmental protection programs. In a move designed to significantly enhance its service on the China–Indian Subcontinent trade, Evergreen Line is teaming up with K Line, COSCO, Wan Hai and PIL to offer two new joint services from early September.  Both will provide direct calls at Karachi and Mundra and will improve current transit time.

The PMX (Pakistan Mundra Express) service will utilise six ships of 4,200 TEU and call at Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Singapore, Port Klang, Karachi, Mundra, Colombo and Singapore once more before returning to Qingdao. The first sailing on the Evergreen Line’s service is scheduled to depart from Qingdao on the 4th of September.

The PIX (Pakistan India Express) will employ five ships of 4,200 TEU.  This service is scheduled to commence with a sailing from Jiangyin (Fuzhou) on the 8th of September and call at Hong Kong, Nansha, Shekou, Singapore, Port Klang, Colombo, Karachi, Mundra, Port Klang and then back to Jiangyin.

In addition to providing efficient shipping service between China and Northwest India as well as Pakistan, the pair of regional services will also further expand Evergreen Line’s global service network by improving connectivity via its transhipment hubs in Singapore, Port Klang and Colombo.

Evergreen Group’s Colon Container Terminal, S.A. (CCT) held a ceremony yesterday to mark the completion of its newly built Berth No. 4. The President of Panama, Juan Carlos Varela, Administrator of Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), Jorge Barakat Pitty, and a number of government officials joined the company’s chairman Captain Yen-I Chang for ribbon cutting. Many dignitaries from shipping and related industries were present at the event to witness the grand opening of the new facility.

CCT is located on the Atlantic side of Panama Canal and enjoys a dominant strategic location as a transit hub for North America, South America and the Caribbean.  In light of the demand for expanded terminal facilities for large vessels following completion of the Canal’s expansion program, Evergreen has planned, designed and built the new Berth No. 4 to upgrade its terminal services.

Berth No. 4 is 16.5 meter in depth and is equipped with three super post-panamax gantry cranes capable of handling 23 rows of containers.  Together with Berth No. 3, the facility offers an overall quay length of 640 meters, which can accommodate larger container ships of up to 14,000 TEU.

Bronson Hsieh, Evergreen Group’s Second Vice Group Chairman said, “The current expansion of the Panama Canal is an epochal milestone in the history of maritime transportation.  It will have revolutionary consequences in terms of  influence on the future development of international transportation. After the expansion project is completed, the Canal will be able to accommodate vessels of around 13,000 TEU, a significant increase on the 5,000 TEU ships which are currently the largest to transit .”

Hsieh added, “CCT is an important container hub catering for the whole region and offers trans-shipment services to many international shipping lines.  Evergreen’s investment in upgrading the terminal facility indicates our commitment to the smooth and efficient operation of the whole international supply chain.”

Berth No. 4 is undergoing various system tests and is scheduled to commence operation in the first quarter of 2016.  The overall handling capacity of CCT is expected to increase from its current level of 1.5 million TEU to 2.4 million. Besides, CCT is continuing with the next stage of expansion program to further increase the quay length of Berth No. 3 and Berth No. 4 to 780 meters.  After its expected completion around the first quarter of 2017, the facility will be able to handle two large vessels of 12,000 – 14,000 TEU simultaneously.

COSCON, Yang Ming, Hanjin Shipping and Evergreen Line are to implement winter service adjustment to NUE3 (AWS) service.

In response to seasonal market demand, COSCON, Yang Ming, Hanjin Shipping and Evergreen Line will suspend NUE3 (AWS) service effective from December 3, 2015.

The last voyage of NUE3 (AWS) would be week 47, M/V Nagoya Tower Voy. 0012E/W (Ningbo ETA November 19, 2015) and Week 48 is implemented void sailing.

Meanwhile other AWE services will continue to provide high service quality to customers.

CKYHE alliance will still be providing one of the most comprehensive service coverage in the market even after this adjustment.

September 11, 2015 – Evergreen Group has signed an order with Japanese shipbuilder Imabari for ten 2,800 TEU class B-type vessels yesterday.  These are in addition to the order for ten similar vessels announced last month from CSBC in Taiwan.

The latest contract was signed by EMC Chairman Mr. Anchor Chang and Imabari Shipbuilding President Mr. Yukito Higaki. The first ship is planned to be delivered during the first half of 2018 with the completion of the series due by the first half of 2019.  All twenty newbuildings are planned to be deployed in the intra-Asia trade.

Evergreen’s B-type vessels will be 211 meters in length, 32.8 meters wide, and have a design draft of 10 meters with a capacity of around 2,800 TEU. The ships are designed to load 13 rows of containers on deck, which is within the span of existing gantry cranes in the major ports on the intra-Asian trade. The hull design of the vessels is wider in comparison to ships of a similar capacity. Such design enables the ships to navigate in the shallower ports encountered in the intra-Asia trade and to enhance their cargo carrying capability. The ships can cruise at a speed up to 21.8 knots, enhancing their on-time performance and competitiveness.

Vessels operating on regional trades, such as intra-Asia, often sail in coastal areas.  With frequent port calls, these ships operate in close proximity to human activity and the living environment.  To reduce their impact on port communities and eco-systems, Evergreen has imposed stringent eco-friendly criteria on their operation.  The B-type vessels are equipped with various environmental protection devices and the latest technology to safeguard the sustainable development of the marine environment. The ships are also to be equipped with an electronic-controlled fuel injection engine, which meets the IMO Tier II standards for NOx emission and the requirements of Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), and can reduce emissions by around 20% in comparison with vessels of traditional designs.

Founded in 1901, Imabari Shipbuilding is Japan’s largest shipbuilder. The agreement for B-type vessels is the third project in which Imabari will participate in Evergreen Line’s fleet renewal program. Evergreen has signed agreements with Shoei Kisen Kaisha, the ship owning arm of Imabari Shipbuilding Group, to charter five 14,000 TEU containerships to be delivered in 2017 and eleven 18,000 TEU containerships to be delivered in 2018 and 2019.
