GEODIS launches “GEODIS e-Logistics” to help brands grow their online sales

29 June 2020 – LEVALLOIS-PERRET

In response to the rapid increase in e-Commerce activity, GEODIS is offering brands a new level of end-to-end logistics support. Its goal? To help them offer their customers the same buying experience online as they do in-store. For this, GEODIS relies on its network of e-Commerce warehouses and transportation service at locations worldwide, and on its new digital platform for the processing of orders in real time.

“The current crisis has benefited e-Commerce, a fundamental sales channel that is experiencing profound accelerated growth, from France to China via the United States. Responding to this new consumer demand requires brands to be able to orchestrate both orders and inventories, while overcoming major logistical obstacles. This is why GEODIS e-Logistics has been developed. This new offering, based on the power of digital technology, is aimed at strengthening brand autonomy”, explains Marie-Christine Lombard, Chief Executive Officer of GEODIS.

Behind the scenes, once the consumer has validated their shopping cart in an online store, marketplace, or social media network, a race against time begins to deliver the order in accordance with the consumer’s choices. “Locating the available product closest to the consumer, wherever that may be, while optimizing the ‘time-cost’ factor, seems like common sense, but today it’s a challenge. Most brands are still struggling to achieve profitable growth via the e-Commerce channel and to provide a personalized customer experience,” explains Ashwani Nath, Vice President & Global Head of e-channel solutions of GEODIS.

GEODIS wants to enable brands to restore their decision-making power to meet consumer expectations while controlling their logistical costs. “Our solution is scalable and allows us to quickly, and easily connect brands’ e-Commerce protocols to our warehouse (e-Fulfillment) and transportation networks,” Ashwani Nath clarifies.

The platform provides a real-time overview of all available inventory, in-store, in warehouse or in transit, worldwide. It also provides for the management of orders no matter the sales channel, and determines the most appropriate supply source, delivery method and returns options.

With this new offering, GEODIS is positioning itself as a preferred logistics partner for brands looking to grow their direct online sales to consumers and retain effective control over their resulting orders. It reaffirms its own mission to be a partner in its customers’ growth.

GEODIS transports 50 million disposable medical gloves from China to Germany for the German Government

The international logistics provider GEODIS is ensuring the safe transport of the cargo from China to Germany. The Freight Forwarding unit of GEODIS in Germany won this major contract of 275 tons in a public tender from the German Government. Around 50,000 boxes of gloves will be transported in five shipments from Chengdu, in the Chinese province of Sichuan, to Frankfurt and Nuremberg by Airfreight and Rail.

The air and rail transportation solution, which GEODIS developed in close cooperation with all partners, includes the continuous monitoring of the shipments. Employees of the Chinese supplier watch over the dispatching and loading of the containers at the Sichuan Medicines & Health Products I./E. Corporation’s production facilities in Shendong, where the certified goods are manufactured. The GEODIS teams in China and Europe monitor transport from Chengdu to the destinations in Germany. So-called GEOtags are used for the containers, which enable live tracking via GPS.

The first airfreight shipment from Chengdu Airport to Frankfurt took place on May 19. This first partial delivery consisted of 2.5 million disposable gloves, packed in 2,500 boxes weighing almost 15 tons. In Frankfurt, GEODIS employees packed the goods on 40 pallets, cleared customs and prepared them for collection.

The first of the four shipments by rail departed from Chengdu to Nuremberg on May 21. Loaded in 40-foot containers, 9,000 boxes with around nine million gloves arrived last weekend. Four more containers left Chengdu on May 28 and June 4. New ones will follow on June 18, and 25. The final shipment is planned to arrive in Nuremberg on July 11.

With its combined transport solution, GEODIS guarantees maximum flexibility in order to be able to react quickly to changes in the supply chain.

The international law firm Berg & Moll, which is specialized in projects for the Belt and Road Initiative, is responsible for contract execution and project monitoring. The transport of medical protective clothing currently involves high risks. Reduced transport capacities, short-term cancellations or changes in modes of transport, strict quality controls and purchasers who do everything they can to intercept goods while they are in transit make the whole process difficult. Claudia von Selle, partner at Berg & Moll, praised the effective teamwork: “Thanks to the great commitment of our Chinese partner and the GEODIS teams in China and Europe, all hurdles were quickly overcome.”

In Germany, the team around Antje Lochmann, Managing Director of GEODIS Freight Forwarding Germany, is coordinating all the activities involved in the contract. “As a response to the new requirements and demands, GEODIS has developed a dedicated concept for transportation of medical protective clothing, and we are particularly pleased to be able to support the German Government with this know-how.”

GEODIS supports rising medical company LabMed to supply health protection goods to Europe and North America

The Singapore based enterprise LabMed has entrusted global logistics company GEODIS to support the company’s growing activity in new markets by delivering urgently needed PPEs from Asia to the COVID-19 ‘hot-spots’ of Europe and North America.

GEODIS is providing LabMed with customs brokerage, short-term storage solutions and transport management services from LabMed’s factory in China via a distribution hub in Singapore to a wide array of international destinations including India, Malaysia, Germany and the United States.

“In terms of fulfilling our multi-faceted needs, GEODIS has been well up to the task,” says Wilson Ang, LabMed’s Regional Managing Director in Singapore. “The close attention and efficiency of the GEODIS staff has been impressive, from the local service in China to the performance at our many destinations.”

The partnership between LabMed, a family owned subsidiary of Kin Seng Hong Pte, and GEODIS began in early May 2020, with the immediate need to swiftly react to fast-changing market demands and devising flexible end-to-end supply chain solutions. LabMed has been called upon to significantly increase its production of surgical masks, sanitising gel and other PPE at its own plant in Dong Guan, Southern China. From initial small shipments of 10 tons of sanitizer to India to bulk supplies of millions of masks to Germany, LabMed’s pipeline of PPE has grown rapidly to include other parts of South-East Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States.

“In Asia-Pacific, GEODIS has a strong focus on enabling Asian based SME businesses to grow their markets”, comments Rene Bach-Larsen, GEODIS’ Sub-Regional Managing Director, ASEAN. “While GEODIS is a trusted partner to global multinationals, we also function as the lifeblood of regional economies through the services we provide.”

“During the current pandemic, we are even more intimately involved in the business of local customers who partner with us. As an essential service, we continue to fast-track their growth, using for instance, specially arranged weekly scheduled flights to many destinations and locating the necessary carrier capacity, whatever the mode. Our GEODIS colleagues at delivery locations around the world enable a truly door-to-door service for vital supplies to reach frontline workers and protect many more.”

The current crisis has required innovative responses from logistics professionals to achieve their customer’s delivery goals. Unprecedented demand peaks on certain trade routes, widely variable carrier capacity across transport modes, critical time constraints, staffing issues and communications challenges have blighted almost all international supply chains.  In providing such response, the application of ingenuity and tailored solutions benefit greatly from the ability of supply chain management to be controlled by one entity.

GEODIS delivers 13 Million Masks to the US with the help of an Antonov AN-124 Aircraft

GEODIS, leading global supply chain operator, has transported 13 million masks from China to the U.S. utilizing an Antonov AN-124, the world’s second largest aircraft. This shipment of personal protective equipment (PPE) arrived at Hartsfield – Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) at 4 p.m. last Friday (22nd May) and is the largest delivered to the airport during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With the help of an Antonov AN-124, GEODIS has been able to make sure millions of essential workers receive the masks they need to stay safe and healthy during these unprecedented times,” said GEODIS Americas President & CEO Randy Tucker. “Our team at GEODIS and our partners, including the Hartsfield – Jackson Atlanta International Airport, that helped make this happen so quickly are supply-chain heroes. We are proud to serve on the front line in partnership with our clients to keep essential materials moving across the globe and business running at a time when the world needs us most.”

The Antonov, which GEODIS chartered on behalf of its client, is an aircraft specially designed for transporting large quantities of cargo. It has the added benefit of allowing freight to be rolled on and off the plane, making loading and unloading operations easier and faster.

Experienced in this critical element of the global supply chain response to COVID-19, GEODIS established an air bridge between China and France to transport PPE for the French Government as early as March. Involving multiple flights over the subsequent weeks, and employing two Antonov AN-124s, the consignments will consist of several hundred million masks.

GEODIS and DELTA DRONE launch “GEODIS Countbot”, an innovative warehouse-inventory solution

A very innovative solution, “GEODIS Countbot” is a stabilized automated system that includes a drone and is able to do inventory and inventory control. Inventory can be done in real time, without human intervention other than a supervising operator and without any special equipment.

“GEODIS Countbot” is the result of over three years of R&D and testing to create a reliable automated inventory service that does not require any additional stationary equipment inside the warehouse and is totally safe, protecting both people and property.

Built by both DELTA DRONE, specialized in civilian drones for professional use, and GEODIS, international leader in transport and logistics, this new service revolutionizes warehouse inventory: “Inventory is a time-consuming activity and can be risky for humans, requiring operations to be shut down and the rental of personnel lifts. With “GEODIS Countbot,” inventory can now be carried out quickly, automatically and safely,” explains Romain Cauvet, global Engineering director, Supply Chain optimization, GEODIS.

In terms of performance, the first assignments performed in real time, in a 10 000 m2 warehouse, allow us to estimate inventory time at under three hours instead of the one to two days it used to take.

The solution combines a robot, a telescopic mast that can reach up to 10 meters and a drone that ensures the stability and therefore the quality of the images collected. It has been the subject of several patent applications.

16 high-resolution cameras are positioned along the mast. The unit moves automatically through the aisles, following trajectories entered beforehand in the robot’s memory thanks to an initial full mapping of the site. As it moves, the cameras photograph the pallet barcodes end detect anomalies, if any. All the data are then reported to the WMS (Warehouse Management System).

From an operational and commercial standpoint, the partners plan to deploy the solution progressively to many warehouses throughout the world, whether or not they are GEODIS warehouses. In Europe, sales of the systems will benefit from the support and existing network of Ott Ventures, Delta Drone’s new reference shareholder, representing close to five million square meters in warehouse space and industrial sites located in various countries, in particular, the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands and Russia.

GEODIS Supports Improved Diversity in Logistics

In an industry which most would characterize as lacking women representation, GEODIS, the leader in global logistics, wants to prove that diversity and inclusion is key to delivering innovative solutions. With the program it is conducting in the Asia Pacific region, GEODIS enables women to open the door on the world of logistics wider than ever before.

The recently celebrated International Women’s Day drew additional focus to the issue of gender equality.  The IWD slogan, ‘An Equal World Is An Enabled World’ encapsulates the thrust of the on-going campaign, which fits perfectly with key elements of GEODIS’ culture.

“Alignment between the aims of the IWD organization and ourselves at GEODIS lies particularly in championing a hiring process where the most appropriate person gets the role, regardless of gender, because we are focused on delivering what is best for the business and for our customers”, illustrated Anne Tan, Head of HR in APAC.

“Additionally, we are committed to celebrating our women and men who lead others towards a more equal workplace, distinguishing GEODIS from its competition in an otherwise male dominated logistics industry.”

Onno Boots, GEODIS’ CEO for APAC reflected, “Women now constitute a third of our management board in APAC; up from zero just a little over a year ago,” he said. “It shows our commitment to diversity and inclusion. It is also strong evidence of the range of talented women who are now attracted to the world of logistics.  At our country management level across the region, 40% of the team are women.”

Logistics and the global supply chain it serves are going through a period of rapid transformation.  This time of change is challenging for an industry where the push to digitalise processes is complicated by how interconnected and cross border the global business environment now is. In this context GEODIS believes that a culture of diversity, crucially with an equal commitment to inclusivity, are key to achieving dynamism, creativity and fresh approaches to problem solving that are required to react to such a need for change.

In terms of practical initiatives employed to advance this policy, GEODIS emphasizes education of its staff about gender neutral policies, localized provision of family care and flexible working hours. A great example is the establishment of an active GEODIS’ Women Network where women (and men) come together to learn about how diversity and inclusion create a better work environment and growth for all aspects of the business and organisation.

In addition, for the whole of March, internal initiatives took place to underscore the messages of IWD and those of GEODIS’ policies.  These included various employee activities in countries where the staff gathered to demonstrate their personal support; upholding the commitment to, and learning about the collective journey GEODIS is on to build an equal and inclusive workplace.

GEODIS establishes additional Air and Rail Services to assist customers hit by Coronavirus distribution

GEODIS has established a number of air charter services to assist customers with urgent shipments during the ongoing Coronavirus crisis. In addition, rail alternatives are being offered to/from China.

Whilst ocean freight continues to be disrupted and air cargo options severely restricted by established carriers cancelling scheduled flights, GEODIS is providing alternative means to move customers’ cargoes between China and Europe as well as on Transatlantic routes.

The first of the air charter services departed from Frankfurt (Germany) on a one-way to Shanghai on the 12th February. In order to facilitate the resurgence in westbound freight out of China, GEODIS quickly followed up on the 21st with the first round trip service departing from Liege (Belgium), again with the destination Shanghai Pudong International.  As of the 28th February weekly round trip flights were established from Frankfurt, with Shanghai departures each Tuesday.  This schedule will remain in place throughout the month of March when consideration of a further extension will be made and is being complemented by flights from Hong Kong to Europe.

GEODIS has continued with its newly introduced direct, dedicated service from Hong Kong to Guadalajara, Mexico, through March.  The next flight will depart Hong Kong on the 22nd.

GEODIS also maintains its offering of rail solutions from major cities in China. Two options are scheduled from Xi’an and Chongqing to the German destinations of Hamburg and Duisburg.  The standard services have an 18 day transit time and from Xi’an to Hamburg an express, 12-day solution is provided.  Return routings are also available.

Immediately following the decision by US authorities to close its borders to visitors from Europe and to prepare for the consequent sharp decrease in commercial cargo capacity, GEODIS established a return air charter program linking Amsterdam and Chicago on a four flights a week schedule. The first flight from Amsterdam will be on the 21st March.

Eric Martin-Neuville, GEODIS Executive Vice President of Global Freight Forwarding explains: “On the current global situation, our priority is to provide reliable and secure transport solutions to our customers to ensure connections between China, Europe and America.”

To further assist customers during this period of disruption, GEODIS is issuing a daily Advisory Bulletin on the Coronavirus Outbreak. This can be found on GEODIS’ website here.

GEODIS recognized for its actions to mitigate climate impact

CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) has awarded GEODIS an “A-” rating for 2019. The Group is now categorized as a ‘Leader’ in environmental care.

This result recognizes the global logistics provider as a Leader that implements the relevant actions to effectively reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, reflecting outstanding environmental management. The achievement is encouraging given that only 6% of companies assessed by CDP from around the world have been rated “A –“ or higher.

“This score demonstrates that GEODIS places climate and carbon issues at the focal point of its business strategy. Our group has set itself the objective of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 and supports its customers in the implementation of solutions that are every more respectful to the environment.” says Marie-Christine Lombard, Chief Executive Office of GEODIS.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy and its commitment to control and reduce the impact of its operations on the environment, GEODIS has responded to the CDP Supply Chain Program questionnaire each year since 2014. CDP is an international, non-profit organization that manages the largest environmental disclosure system for companies and cities. Through respondents’ self-reported declarations, it evaluates practical measures undertaken, such as reporting processes or greenhouse gas emissions reductions programs in the supply chain and rates the companies accordingly.
