GEODIS opens a new site for eLogistics in the United Kingdom

GEODIS announces the opening of a new eLogistics platform in the UK. GEODIS eLogistics, which was launched in 2020, supports e-retailers in outsourcing their logistics operations. It offers a complete logistics solution for order preparation and personalisation, inventory optimisation, transport organisation and returns management.

In April 2023, a new GEODIS eLogistics platform opened up in Coventry, United Kingdom. This 7,000 m2 site is located in a strategic area allowing rapid distribution of products thanks to good transport links. It has the capacity to store more than 500,000 SKUs and to process up to 5,000 orders per day.

GEODIS’ eLogistics solution allows e-commerce companies of all sizes to efficiently outsource their logistics without the need for a large financial investment, thanks to shared multi-client warehouses and a more flexible contractual commitment. GEODIS eLogistics integrates seamlessly with the leading CMSs, ERPs and marketplaces. As soon as a buyer places an order online, the eLogistics teams take over the preparation and shipping of the order and any returns. E-merchants can track the progress of their business and their orders in real time thanks to the Visibility Portal, a digital platform at their disposal.

GEODIS now operates a total of six eLogistics platforms, located in the United States, France and the United Kingdom, with space also available in Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. A total of 40,000 m2 of warehousing is dedicated to this offering.

Jean-Pierre Juteau, head of GEODIS eLogistics Europe, said: “The eLogistics offering is the latest innovation from GEODIS. The opening of this new eLogistics facility in the UK will allow new webshops, marketplaces and other kinds of e-commerce platforms to develop their businesses in a new geographical zone close to local markets.”

The attached video gives a behind the scenes view of the eLogistics solution.

GEODIS Scores Another Win with ARKEMA’s Customs Brokerage Contract in Europe

A leader in Specialty Materials, ARKEMA has extended its partnership with GEODIS, signing a Standalone Customs Brokerage contract to provide both import and export customs clearance services across 15 countries in Europe.

One of the key objectives set by ARKEMA was to centralize the management of customs operations at European level with “best in class” customs processes. GEODIS responded with its digital customs solution which enables to improve trade compliance and security of ARKEMA’s Supply-Chain through its web portal, IRIS.

The resulting contract confirms both parties’ intention and mutual trust in building a long-term relationship reports Jérôme Chadeau, SVP Vertical Market Industrial at GEODIS. “The centralization of our client’s customs brokerage practices in Europe will contribute to improve regulatory compliance and operational efficiency in all the countries where ARKEMA’s subsidiaries, business units and production sites are located. This model allows for better control over customs activities across Europe, simplified and flexible customs operations management, and increased capability to monitor compliance and efficiency of customs operations” he said.

ARKEMA is structured into 3 complementary, resilient and highly innovative segments dedicated to Specialty Materials – Adhesive Solutions, Advanced Materials, and Coating Solutions – accounting for some 91% of Group sales in 2022, and a well-positioned and competitive Intermediates segment. The blending of these operational divisions helps create strong in-house synergies in terms of innovation.

Jean-Marc Viallatte, VP Supply Chain Group at Arkema explains the advantages of this corporate approach: “It offers us an outstanding ability to serve our customers in an attractive and diverse growing market. We have built on and continue to exploit our unique expertise in materials science to design materials addressing the ever-growing demand for innovative and sustainable materials. We therefore require a logistics partner who can provide flexible yet comprehensive customs brokerage services that are intelligent enough to adapt to the multi-faceted and ever-changing regulatory environment we see in Europe.  With GEODIS, we are sure we have found such a partner.”

GEODIS’ customs brokerage solution offers fast and secure customs clearance processing for ARKEMA’s international shipments, with 360° visibility and control of customs flows.  Through its IRIS digital platform KPIs, dashboards and customized reports on compliance topics tailored to ARKEMA’s specifications are shared on a dedicated SharePoint.

Planned development of the partnership include plans to achieve the smooth integration of electronic data interchanges (EDI) into Arkema’s transportation management system, which will reinforce existing real-time tracking tools.

The awarding of this contract in Europe follows the recent celebration by GEODIS on receiving the ‘Strategic Carrier of ARKEMA China Award’ in 2023.  This was granted in recognition of concerted efforts by GEODIS to reinforce the client’s supply chain strategy in the region in 2022 and marks the third consecutive year in which GEODIS has been honored in such a way.

Recent GEODIS investments and new certification underlines its growth in the Chinese market

Certification of regional headquarters in Shanghai coincides with redevelopment of GEODIS’ Center of Excellence in Shenzhen and an award for performance at Zhengzhou Airport.

A global leader in the provision of logistics services, GEODIS has been growing its capabilities in Asia-Pacific recently, and in China particularly.  As an economic powerhouse, the Chinese market is of critical strategic importance to GEODIS and will continue to be a lynchpin of the logistic Group’s expansion in the most important locations globally.

GEODIS’ continued development in China was underlined last month when its Shanghai headquarters were certified officially by the local Government as one of twenty newly recognised ‘Regional Headquarters of a Multinational Company, the only one in the Jing’an district of the city.  This status will afford GEODIS local government assistance in terms of trade facilitation, talent introduction and service support.

In highlighting the advantages that this recognition brings to its customers, Onno Boots, Regional President and CEO, Asia Pacific and Middle East emphasises, “As a result of the good standing GEODIS has in China, our customers’ business continues to benefit from the increased ease of doing business with us there.  A further advantage is GEODIS having Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status granted by the local Shanghai customs department, which certainly enables us to deliver a further expedited service to our customers, for contract logistics.”

The Group’s commitment to the Chinese market was further proven by the redevelopment of its Center of Excellence (CoE) in Shenzhen. To better support customers in managing their end-to-end supply chains from one centralized location, the Shenzhen facility, part of GEODIS | Supply Chain Optimization (SCO) offering, will provide the required overall visibility.

Established in 2009 in South China, the GEODIS | SCO Line of Business helps global customers in various sectors such as high-tech, retail and healthcare, with manufacturing locations or hubs in mainland China, to optimize their operational processes, control their supply chain, improve their resiliency, and accelerate decision-making.

The upgrading of the Center of Excellence in Shenzhen is justified in part by the city being a magnet for talent. An immediate goal is to ensure the continued attraction of passionate and diverse groups of supply chain professionals to accommodate customers’ growing demands and achieve GEODIS’ own growth ambitions.  The aim is not just to attract, but also to retain these skilled people by improving the collaborative workspace in which teams can exchange great new ideas that can benefit all customers in the present and future.

To round out the good news, further north in the province of Henan, GEODIS was celebrated by the Zhengzhou Airport Authority with an award for performance excellence in 2022.  The airport was utilized throughout the year to transport significant tonnages via GEODIS’ branded freighter operation there.

GEODIS strengthens its capabilities for air freight temperature-controlled pharmaceutical shipments across Asia Pacific and Middle East

CEIV certification is an assurance of the quality of transportation for healthcare companies in the region.

Leading global logistics operator GEODIS has announced that it has strengthened its air freight temperature-controlled pharma shipments capabilities in Asia Pacific and Middle East (APAC&ME) with the Center of Excellence for Independent Validators in Pharmaceutical Logistics (CEIV Pharma) certification. The certification covers multiple locations in China (PVG), Indonesia (CGK), India (DEL & BOM), South Korea (ICN), Thailand (BKK), United Arab Emirates (DXB) and Singapore (SIN).

This certification supports GEODIS’ strategic goals of establishing Pharma Healthcare as a key organizational vertical and expanding its global network by accrediting sites in numerous countries throughout the APAC region.

According to Onno Boots, Regional President and CEO of GEODIS for APAC and Middle East, “With the CEIV Pharma accreditation, we can ensure our customers of our competence and commitment to handle pharmaceutical temperature-sensitive products with the utmost care and attention. Pharmaceutical businesses need to find logistics solutions that are dependable and effective, and GEODIS is in a perfect position to offer them the best services in the area.”

This series of certifications is a reflection of the tremendous investment GEODIS has made in guaranteeing the highest levels of quality and compliance in its Pharma Healthcare capabilities.

“Without a doubt, we are responding to the healthcare industry’s demand for options in the selection of global supply chain partners and we look forward to establishing GEODIS as a key service provider for pharma and healthcare companies, particularly in Asia Pacific and Middle East where we see the key hubs of production and distribution”, adds Boots.

The CEIV Pharma certification for GEODIS further demonstrates its dedication to offering customers supply chain transparency and visibility. GEODIS can provide customers with shipment location and temperature data using GPS data loggers controlled by a control tower, enabling more openness and visibility.

In addition, the capabilities of GEODIS in customs brokerage and contract logistics are of particular interest to the decision-makers in Pharma Healthcare in this region. The best illustration of GEODIS’ capabilities for contract logistics is in Singapore, where GEODIS has GDP, GMP, and ISO13485 in its warehouses. GEODIS is well-positioned to manage the trade compliance needs of the healthcare companies as they expand their operations into new markets.

GEODIS honored by Arkema China at its Annual Carrier Conference

Partnerships underscore the collaboration between industry and supply chain provider as trade flows stabilize

GEODIS, a global leading transport and logistics services provider, has been named “Strategic Carrier of Arkema China” in recognition of its concerted efforts to reinforce Arkema’s supply chain strategy in the region in 2022. This marks the third consecutive year in which GEODIS has been honored at the Arkema China Annual Carrier Conference, having also received the same award in 2021, as well as the “Core Carrier of Arkema China” award in the 2020.

Didier LEBLANC – Regional President Acrylic Monomers Asia presenting the award to Sally ZHOU, GEODIS head of sales and marketing of (Central) China and Elva CHEN, GEODIS regional key account manager for the Arkema account in APAC & ME

While much of the last three year period has ushered in a slew of challenges for the maritime industry, the successful partnership has tapped into GEODIS’ extensive network of transport suppliers and comprehensive auditing strategies to ensure the seamless processing of Arkema’s general cargo across shipping lanes, custom clearances as well as both pre- and on-carriage procedures. This, in spite of port congestions and limited container capacities stemming from unparalleled surges in global economic activity.

The Annual Conference also set in motion promising roadmaps to continue the partnership’s ongoing momentum in 2023. Successfully implemented plans included the smooth integration of electronic data interchanges (EDI) into Arkema’s transportation management system to reinforce real-time tracking tools, on top of advancing operational agility through private charter and priority loading services.  All of which will further support Arkema’s growing presence in the region.

“We are delighted to continue our strong collaboration with Arkema and look forward to playing a key role in the next chapter of their growth,” said Onno Boots, GEODIS’ Regional President and CEO, Asia Pacific and Middle East.  “Innovation and a collaborative spirit have and will continue to form the center of all our projects. This award serves as a testament of our commitment to supporting our partners’ growth with resilient and nimble services that can withstand all the changes in a rapidly evolving supply chain ecosystem.”

GEODIS’ continued partnership with Arkema is a prime example of the organisation’s growing strength in China, assisting companies as their business normalise into pre-2019 levels while trade flows between countries continue to strengthen.

GEODIS expands offering to retail sector with new lease on multi-user facility in Shanghai’s Minhang District

A 10-year lease on the facility will continue to grow GEODIS’ presence in China and offer logistics solutions for the growing e-commerce industry

GEODIS, a global leader in the transport and logistics sector, has signed a 10-year lease agreement with PRD Group for a 20,000 square-meter multi-user facility in Minhang district, Shanghai. The facility is set to bolster GEODIS’ contract logistics capabilities for retail partners, providing improved storage and inventory processing to support the fast-growing e-commerce industry that is expected to be worth USD 2 trillion in Asia Pacific by 2025[1].

The new facility is slated to officially open to GEODIS’ customers in July 2023 and will include a state-of-the-art storage system, consisting of mezzanine flooring, Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) pallet racks, and racking served by Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGV). The facility will provide the space needed to support large merchandise inventory as well as inbound and outbound procedures. At peak capacity, the site will be able to manage an inventory of close to 20,000 Stock-Keeping Units (SKU). This will include having the space to process up to 300,000 lines per day for GEODIS’ Business-to-Consumer (B2C) customers, in addition to approximately 15,000 lines per day for its Business-to-Business (B2B) clientele.

“Retailers today are facing a dynamic environment, where the rise of e-commerce and omnichannel platforms are changing consumer demands for goods and services. Our goal as a logistics provider is to support our customers – and theirs – by meeting these demands. With this strategic partnership with PRD Group, GEODIS will be tapping into the developed multi-user facility in Shanghai to optimize retail supply chains and provide innovative solutions that not only match but exceed the standards of service required by our retail partners to better serve their customers,” said Onno Boots, Regional President & CEO, GEODIS Asia Pacific and Middle East. “We are excited to work closely with our partners to integrate GEODIS’ operations into the facility in 2023 and continue our ongoing journey to being the strategic logistics partner of choice in the region.”

As part of this facility, retail customers can also expect Value-Added Services (VAS) such as packaging and re-packaging, re-labelling, quality control as well as the handling of return shipments and reclamations.

Aligning with GEODIS’ commitment of advancing sustainable supply chain growth, the lease will also provide the company access to concrete processes that manage carbon emissions, including the use of sustainable construction materials for the warehouse façade, LED lights and motion sensors, automatic energy consumption monitoring systems, which actively keep track of electricity usage, as well as energy-efficient air conditioners. These features in the developed site have been certified ‘Platinum’ by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, the highest level of accreditation within the most widely used green building rating system in the world. To complement these, GEODIS’ delivery fleet within the district will also consist of electric vans for urban delivery.

GEODIS concludes the acquisition of trans-o-flex in Germany

GEODIS today announces the finalization of the acquisition of trans-o-flex, following regulatory approval. trans-o-flex is a leading German network for temperature-controlled pharmaceutical goods and express premium delivery. This acquisition will establish GEODIS as one of the most prominent players in the key market of healthcare and will significantly enhance its delivery capabilities in Europe.

Marie-Christine Lombard, Chief Executive Officer of GEODIS, said: “The acquisition of trans-o-flex, the largest temperature-controlled distribution network in Germany specializing in healthcare, accelerates our growth in a key market for GEODIS. We want to enable trans-o-flex to consolidate its market position in Germany and expand it in the largest European countries. It forms part of our ambition to develop our global end-to-end logistics solutions in support of our customers’ growth and geographical expansion.”

With this acquisition, GEODIS is adding a wide range of services for time-critical deliveries to its portfolio and offers a fast, reliable and time-definite delivery service in Germany, one of its key geographies.

The addition of trans-o-flex capabilities to the already existing Freight Forwarding and Contract Logistics businesses will strengthen GEODIS’ position in Germany, reaching close to €1,5 billion worth of revenue with more than 3,400 employees. Synergies for both companies will be created by leveraging all of trans-o-flex’s strengths and resources, including its strong brand and the expertise of its existing management team.

trans-o-flex will remain independent and will be run under the leadership of Wolfgang P. Albeck as CEO. The company will operate under a supervisory board chaired by Marie-Christine Lombard, with Christoph Schoeller as deputy chairman. Trans-o-flex will report to the Europe region under the leadership of Thomas Kraus. To ensure commercial synergies, Wolfgang P. Albeck will join the executive board of GEODIS’s Europe region.

Christoph Schoeller, deputy chairman of trans-o-flex, said: “We are pleased that trans-o-flex can now start a new, international growth phase. In order to ensure continuity, the entire trans-o-flex management will remain in office. Together we will continue to work on the success story of the Group.”

The focus of the express service, which was founded in 1971 and has established special logistics solutions for the cosmetics, consumer electronics and other sensitive goods sectors in addition to healthcare, is in Germany. Here and in Austria, the company employs almost 2,000 people at 77 network and warehouse locations. In both Austria and in Germany, the company has established its own nationwide network for actively temperature-controlled pharmaceutical transports at 2 to 8° C and 15 to 25° C.

Commenting on the annual results for 2022, Marie-Christine Lombard, Chief Executive Officer of de GEODIS, said:

“In 2022, GEODIS achieved a record level of performance for the third year in a row. These excellent results in a challenging economic and geopolitical environment stem from the expertise of our teams, the complementary nature of our various businesses and our ambitious development strategy. I am particularly proud of the work accomplished by the Group’s 49,400 employees, and I would like to thank them for their unfailing commitment.

“Although uncertainties remain in 2023, we remain confident in GEODIS’s growth prospects. A performance that confirms the Group’s strategic choices

  • Sharp increase in revenues and profitability

GEODIS reported revenues of €13.7 billion in 2022, 19% higher than in 2021. This performance was driven by sustained activity across all the Group’s Lines of Business and demonstrated the relevance of its business model.

The Freight Forwarding Line of Business benefited from a favorable market environment, as freight rates remained high in both air and marine transport. Nonetheless, the fourth quarter of 2022 marked the end of the price boom caused by the pandemic. Even so, prices remain highly volatile.

The Contract Logistics Line of Business saw a sharp rise in revenues in the United States as a result of business development and growth in volumes of existing customers. Business in Europe also continued to grow, despite an underlying decline in consumption in an inflationary environment as of the second semester.

The Distribution & Express Line of Business managed to increase its volumes and its result by comparison with 2021 in spite of increased production costs owing to inflation.

The Road Transport Line of Business again enjoyed a high level of growth, largely because of increased business in southern and eastern Europe.

Overall, this performance resulted in a significant increase in profitability, with EBIT increasing by 10% to €518 million and EBITDA[3] standing at €1,163 million.

  • Growth boosted by strategic investments

In line with its “Ambition 2023” plan, GEODIS carried out further investments to strengthen its positions in core geographical zones and to expand its service offerings in certain Lines of Business. The Group has consolidated its integrated network of transport and logistics platforms on a worldwide scale.

In 2022, GEODIS carried out several targeted acquisitions:

  • Acquisition of Keppel Logistics, which has warehousing capacity in Singapore. This operation strengthens the Group’s Contract Logistics and e-Commerce services in Asia-Pacific.
  • Acquisition of Need It Now Delivers in the United States, which operates an excellent domestic freight network. Thanks to this acquisition, GEODIS has extended its presence in this strategic area, increased its capabilities in contract logistics and in urban logistics.
  • Proposed acquisition of trans-o-flex, a specialist in the controlled-temperature transportation of pharmaceutical products and a leading player in the premium express transport sector in Germany. This acquisition will establish GEODIS as one of the most prominent players in the key market of healthcare and will significantly enhance its delivery capabilities in Europe. Completion of this transaction is scheduled for the first quarter of 2023.

An increasing number of decarbonization initiatives to ensure responsible growth.

At GEODIS, growth is based not only on economic performance but also on the ability to control and reduce the environmental impact of its activities.

In 2022, GEODIS increased initiatives to reduce carbon emissions across all of its Lines of Business.

  • Greener fleets for road transport

GEODIS is accelerating the greening of its fleets with investments in low-carbon technologies. 420 biogas or electric vehicles are currently scheduled for delivery. These vehicles will enable low-carbon solutions to be employed for last-mile deliveries in the city centers of the 40 largest metropolitan areas in France by 2024.

GEODIS has also signed a partnership agreement with Renault Trucks to develop electric 16-tonne trucks designed specifically for urban logistics.

  • Acceleration of multimodal shipping

GEODIS is pressing ahead with the development of rail-road solutions, particularly to destinations in Italy, bringing the number of trains running on the European rail network to over 100 per week.

  • Development of an offer of alternative fuels for ocean and air freight

GEODIS offers its customers the option of using sustainable fuel, which results in reductions in greenhouse gas emissions of up to 90% for ocean and air freight. The biofuel used for aviation is processed from biomass (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), while the alternative fuel used for marine freight is mostly produced from recycled oils (Sustainable Marine Fuel).

A solid outlook in an uncertain environment

Although the current macro-economic environment is uncertain, GEODIS’s growth prospects remain solid thanks to the diversity of its business portfolio and geographic locations.

In the future, the Group intends to pursue its development and capture new markets by accelerating its digital transformation, while enriching its portfolio of new offerings for its customers in all parts of the world.
