Led by General Manager Matthias Gross, the new Forwarding Solutions Division (forwarding@combi-lift.net) consists of three experienced employees specialised in the Non-Containerised Cargo (NCC) segment – pieces and goods that can be transported both with and without the use of special equipment, at maximum reliability and the lowest possible cost. “Our logistics offering primarily targets international customers in the machine building industry and plant construction sector, but we basically transport everything that fits or does not fit into a standard container – by ship, road or rail,” Matthias Gross explained.

“We at Combi Lift are extremely pleased that Matthias Gross, Florian Koppelmann and Mike Schmidt have joined our team. They all have tremendous experience in the international forwarding business,” said Holger Hinrichs, Managing Director of Combi Lift. “The new department adds another pillar to our business model: In addition to the established project and salvage business, Combi Lift now also offers comprehensive forwarding and supply chain solutions. This makes us even more flexible and attractive for our customers.”

Dr Martin Harren, Managing Director of the Harren & Partner Group, described the strategy behind founding the new division: “I am very proud and delighted that we were able to form this new Forwarding Solutions Division. This marks yet another milestone in the history of our group. Now that Harren & Partner has spent the last several years strengthening and expanding its position in the heavy lift, tanker and bulker segments, we want to continue this development with our newly expanded forwarding services.”

“Vertical Approach” in deep-sea mining: BAUER Maschinen GmbH and the Harren & Partner Group establish joint venture

Schrobenhausen, Germany – Seafloor massive sulfides are a valuable mineral raw material found at the bottom of the deep sea. The “Vertical Approach” is a method for extracting seafloor massive sulfides using the trench cutter method, an established technique in specialist foundation engineering that is operated and supported in the deep-sea environment from a ship on the open sea. As a relatively small-scale intervention with a minimal ecological footprint, this approach is an ideal method for test mining and exploration of deposits up to a depth of 3,000 m.

The approach was conceived in discussions between BAUER Maschinen GmbH and the Harren & Partner Group concerning opportunities to combine the expertise of both companies and to develop new strategies for sustainable mining approaches in accordance with the standards of the International Seabed Authority (ISA).

On August 26, a joint venture agreement was signed between the two companies and Seabed Mineral Services GmbH was established. The first stage is to determine the economic viability and, in particular, the environmental compatibility of the “Vertical Approach.”

“We are thrilled to have found an expert partner in Bauer who is willing – just like us – to seize opportunities and take on a pioneering role in the field of deep-sea mining. Our joint approach for this venture is based on a combination of established technologies. This enables us to minimize the technological risk while at the same time keeping costs down,” says Heiko Felderhoff, Managing Director of Harren & Partner.

(2) In the “Vertical Approach”, the template and diaphragm wall cutter are lowered via a winch instead of being placed once and then moved horizontally along the seafloor.

Leonhard Weixler, head of the Diaphragm Wall Equipment division at BAUER Maschinen GmbH, adds: “The chemistry between us is very good; we share a similar spirit. This partnership is an ideal union of specialist knowledge and experience in the afield of offshore technologies and services with expertise in the development and production of specialist foundation engineering equipment for onshore and offshore customers around the world.”

Heiko Felderhoff and Leonhard Weixler act as Managing Directors of Seabed Mineral Services GmbH.

The concept behind the “Vertical Approach”

Deep-sea sampling undeniably has an impact on sensitive deep-sea ecosystems. Nevertheless, the “Vertical Approach” makes the utmost effort to minimize the ecological footprint. A serious concern when it comes to deep-sea mining is the stirring up of sediment and the potential impact on sensitive deep-sea species. To prevent fine material from escaping the cutting area, a protective collar is positioned around the cutting wheels at the start and the actual cutting process is protected by the surrounding ore. As a result, fine material from the cutting process remains within this area, while the water mixed with fine sediment and cutting chips is pumped into the ore container.

The separation process is carried out within the ore container to separate the particles from the sea water via sedimentation. After this treatment, the water is fed back to the cutting wheels and reused in the cutting circuit. This closed system minimizes the volume of sea water that is impacted by the cutting process.

Sampling is selective: the template and trench cutter are lowered using a cable winch instead of being initially positioned then moved horizontally along the seafloor. This restricts the sphere of influence to the base area of the template feet and trench cutter. Zones with ore can be clearly separated from zones without ore.

Another aspect of the “Vertical Approach” that reduces the environmental impact of this method compared to other methods is that only one “tool” is used for extracting material. The soil does not need to be crushed later for transport to the ship. Only the raw material is extracted, with minimal impact on the environment.

Harren Bulkers takes over Post-Panamax and adds two more bulk carriers to its management

Only a few months after the launch of Harren Bulkers, three 93,000 tdw Post-Panamax bulkers have been secured for the fleet on a long-term basis.

Bremen-based shipping company Harren Bulkers is proud to announce the acquisition of the Post-Panamax bulker Topas (built 2011). The ship will be named Pablo. With an overall length of 229.2 m (beam 38.0 m, draft 14.9 m), Pablo is currently the biggest ship in the Harren Bulkers fleet. The two sister ships Turmalin and Tuerkis (both built 2012) were taken over by Oldendorff Carriers and renamed Constantin Oldendorff and Clemens Oldendorff just after delivery. Oldendorff entrusted Harren Bulkers with the technical management of the vessels.

Dr. Martin Harren, Managing Director of Harren Bulkers and the Harren & Partner Group, explains: “Our bulker division is becoming an increasingly important and larger part of our group. As such, it only makes sense that we would continue to grow our fleet strategically in the long term. The three Post-Panamax vessels are just the first step – one that will lay the foundation for acquiring more ships and expanding our fleet. Once again, our bank, the Ostfriesische Volksbank, proved to be a reliable partner to implement this project.”

Joachim Zeppenfeld, Managing Director of Harren Bulkers, emphasises the quality of the ships: “The three bulkers were built by COSCO Zhoushan Shipyards in China. There is currently sufficient demand for this size of tonnage. We have used these types of vessels for many years, and they have always performed extremely well.”

Patrik Pukall, Head of Project Finance at Harren & Partner and General Manager at Harren Bulkers, adds: “We have seen a strong response from potential partners since Harren Bulkers was founded. We would like to use this momentum, coupled with the positive developing market environment, to implement further projects.”

Harren & Partner adds jack-up vessel Wind Lift I to its fleet and launches SAL Renewables

Bremen, 13 January 2021

The offshore renewables sector is about to meet a new contender in the rapidly expanding market for offshore wind. With Harren & Partner’s addition of the versatile jack-up vessel Wind Lift I to its fleet, SAL Renewables launches as a specialised provider for offshore wind services and installation with a strong asset in its portfolio. Born as a sister company to the renowned heavy lift shipping company SAL Heavy Lift, this new specialised entity focuses on the offshore maintenance and installation of wind turbines and their corresponding components.

The Harren & Partner Group is as busy as ever with its work in the global wind energy sector. Already an established and preferred logistics provider to contractors and turbine manufacturers in the offshore wind sector, SAL is taking another significant step in expanding its footprint in the field of renewables. Today, SAL Renewables opens its doors as a supplier of specialised vessels as well as maintenance and installation solutions to the offshore wind industry.

SAL Renewables proudly launches with a specialised vessel in its fleet: the Wind Lift I – a 2010-built dynamic positioning (DP) jack-up crane vessel ideally suited for offshore wind maintenance projects as well as the installation of wind turbine parts. With a 500 t capacity, high outreach offshore crane and a fully equipped accommodation block for up to 50 people, this highly versatile asset also has a strong track record.

Wind Lift I represents an important enhancement of our fleet. It extends our scope of action to provide our customers with comprehensive, yet customised solutions,” says Heiko Felderhoff, Managing Director of SAL Renewables. “Wind Lift I is a highly adaptable vessel. There are only few things that it can’t do, it’s kind of like a Swiss army knife. This asset makes for a great start for our new venture with SAL Renewables.”

Matthieu Moerman, Head of Projects at SAL Renewables, adds: “Megawatts capacity of wind parks keep increasing and old wind parks will need to be renewed with new turbines or decommissioned. With Wind Lift I we are not only targeting the installation and maintenance market but also decommissioning and upgrading of old existing wind parks.”

The Wind Lift I was recently deployed by SAL for a hydraulic hammer test as part of an offshore wind project in the North Sea. Despite for the season’s unpredictable weather patterns, the vessel managed the job perfectly.

In addition to Wind Lift I, SAL Renewables also holds access to the offshore DP2 heavy lift ship Blue Giant.

SAL Renewables benefits from the years of wind experience in the group, and employs specialists with extensive expertise in the sector. SAL Renewables is not involved in any traditional heavy lift shipping operations, which are performed by SAL Heavy Lift as the transport and logistics arm. As such, SAL Renewables is a perfect complement to SAL’s existing services – providing comprehensive, complete maritime solution for the offshore wind industry.

Dr. Martin Harren, Managing Director of Harren & Partner, explains the strategy behind the founding of SAL Renewables and the acquisition of Wind Lift I: “Wind power has been a cornerstone of our business in the past few years, and we continue to see significant projects here. The world’s demand for energy is higher than ever before, and a major energy transition is currently underway. The projects resulting from this change are crucial to our business. SAL Renewables is a perfect supplement to our established logistics business, but also something new. By offering maintenance and component installation services predominantly for the wind turbines themselves, we are expanding our total service offerings to the global renewables market while also meeting the toughest individual demands and expectations in the offshore markets.”

SAL Renewables is based in Bremen – a convenient location to leverage the diverse and far-ranging resources within the Harren & Partner Group and SAL Heavy Lift.

About SAL Renewables

SAL Renewables is a sister company to the renowned heavy lift shipping company SAL Heavy Lift and a member of the Harren & Partner Group.

The company specialises in offshore maintenance and support services targeted towards the offshore wind sector.

Through its access to specialised, diverse and advanced offshore vessels with dynamic positioning and/or jack-up capabilities, SAL Renewables offers a wide range of expert, cost-efficient services – including vessel time chartering, specialised engineering solutions and complex project management services.

SAL Renewables meets the highest standards with regard to quality, technical innovation, health, safety and environment. SAL’s large network of sales offices and exclusive agents across more than 20 countries ensures our strong global outreach. SAL has a green perspective, is committed to building a greener tomorrow through its services and technical innovations.

BBG and Harren & Partner join forces

Bremer Bereederungsgesellschaft (BBG) and Harren & Partner (H&P) are combining and expanding their expertise, fleets and networks in the bulker segment. The new “Harren Bulkers” brand provides the umbrella for these shared activities.

Bremer Bereederungsgesellschaft and Harren & Partner will manage a fleet of 23 bulk carriers. BBG Managing Director Joachim Zeppenfeld is thrilled about the new alliance: “Harren & Partner is a highly diversified family-owned business with a very strong presence in the bulkers segment as well as other markets – such as heavy lifters, tankers and container feeders. By joining forces, we can benefit from our shared expertise while continuing to diversify and strengthen our ship management portfolios. BBG will continue to run as an operational entity, and our clients and business partners will not notice any changes in our day-to-day business.”

The two companies aim to systematically expand and strengthen the bulker segment over the long term: “BBG and H&P see great potential in this field,” explained Peter Grönwoldt, Managing Director at Harren & Partner. “The goal is to continue our strong growth in this sector. Founding Harren Bulkers is just the first step – one that will lay the foundation for acquiring more ships and expanding our fleet.”

BBG’s roots date back to the year 1970, when the company was founded under the name “Frigomaris Shipping”. The organisation first became specialised in the management of container ships under the name “Ganymed Shipping” starting in 1987, but BBG has primarily operated bulk carriers since 2010. The company’s fleet includes Midi Supramax, Ultramax, Panamax, Post-Panamax and Caper bulkers.

“I am very proud and delighted that we were able to form this new alliance. This marks yet another milestone in the history of Harren & Partner. BBG is a very prestigious company with many years of history and experienced employees, as well as a strong international reputation for quality, trust and expertise in the bulker segment,” commented Dr. Martin Harren, Managing Director of Harren & Partner. “Now that Harren & Partner has spent the last several years strengthening and expanding its position in the heavy lift and tanker segments, we want to continue this development with bulkers. We are convinced that founding Harren Bulkers will put both BBG and Harren & Partner in a very good position for the future.”

Patrik Pukall, Head of Project Finance at H&P and General Manager at Harren Bulkers, thinks that the new Bremen-based bulker alliance is an interesting set-up for investors and ship owners: “Our professional ship management operations and effective finance team make us an especially attractive partner for investors. We have the group’s extensive resources at our disposal for everything we do. We will take a creative, transparent approach to every new project – and make it a success.”

Combi Lift completes first project phase well ahead of schedule

German heavy lift expert Combi Lift has successfully completed the first phase of the Gazprom Amur Gas Processing Plant Project in Russia. The last cargo was delivered to Svobodn180925 Gazprom Amur GPP Project - transshipment in De-Kastriy one month before the last contractual delivery date.

Thanks to detailed planning by Combi Lift’s project management team in Bremen and tight monitoring by Combi Lift’s on-site team in Russia, discharging was finalised on September 16, 2018.

The Linde Group hired Combi Lift to be the exclusive logistics partner for oversized and heavy lift cargo for the Gazprom Amur GPP Project. The transport can only be done during the summertime, taking advantage of the ice-free periods on the Amur and Zeya Rivers.

“The winning relationship with our client, The Linde Group, ensured that the project preparation phase and later operations were very efficient. There were no damages during the entire first transport phase, which was completed one month before the last contractual delivery date. We aim for the same success with phase two, beginning on May 15, 2019,” explained Holger Krenz, Head of Project Management Gazprom Amur GPP Project at Combi Lift.

The eight tugs and seven barges carried 79 pieces (61,755 freight tonnes) from De-Kastri to Svobodny between May 18 and September 16. Each trip from De-Kastri to the jetty is 2371 kilometres long and takes about 21 days. The entire scope involves transporting over 176,000 freight tonnes of cargo, including 12 columns weighing 900 tonnes each.

About the project: Spanning 2,824 kilometres, the Amur River is the world’s tenth longest river, forming the border between the far eastern part of Russia and north-eastern China. All project cargo needs to be discharged in Svobodny, located on the right bank of the Zeya River, a northern tributary of the Amur River. Heavy lift transportation is quite challenging in a place like this: The water is only 1.10 metres deep in some areas, and weather conditions are often severe.

Combi Lift developed a sophisticated concept to master this difficult feat: Heavy lift vessels will transport the cargo from ports in Europe and Korea, which then will be transferred to barges on the sheltered inner anchorage of the port of De-Kastri. Special shallow draft pusher tugs will tow the barges up the Amur and Zeya Rivers to Svobodny for discharging at jetty and transfer the cargo to the last mile logistics service provider.

The cargo will be shipped in five phases from 2018 to 2022, taking advantage of the ice-free periods on the Amur and Zeya Rivers.

The four Amur River tugs, four Zeya River shallow draft tugs and seven barges were custom-built by the Damen Shipyards Group for this project. They are designed to cope with extremely low water levels, especially on the Zeya River. All of the tugs and barges sail under the Russian flag, and are classed by Russian River Register (RRR) respectively the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS).

Gazprom, The Linde Group, Gazprom Pererabotka Blagoveshchensk and NIPIGAS will use the delivered components for the Gazprom Amur GPP Project – one of the largest natural gas processing plants in the world, with a capacity of up to 42 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year. The plant is part of Gazprom’s project to supply Russian gas from eastern Siberian gas fields to China using the “Power of Siberia” pipeline. This will be built in five phases and completed by 2024.

About Combi Lift: Over the last 18 years, Combi Lift’s experienced mariners and engineers have become experts in the worldwide transport of heavy lift and project cargoes. From the outset, Combi Lift has focussed on developing smart and efficient engineering solutions for complex logistics tasks. Peter Harren, Founder and Managing Director of Harren & Partner, explains the strategy behind the purchase: “Although the oil markets are currently still recovering, we have deliberately opted for this investment despite its counter-cyclical nature. Alongside our classic offshore activities, we also wish to further strengthen our position in attractive niche markets such as the salvage business, where this vessel also has possibilities for deployment.”

“Blue Giant is a cutting-edge vessel which represents an important enhancement of our diversified H&P fleet. It extends our scope of action to provide our customers with comprehensive, yet customised solutions,” says Dr. Martin Harren, Managing Director of Harren & Partner.

The history of the MV Blue Giant has come full circle as it was built in 2008 to the order of Harren & Partner at Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven, Germany. It was one of the first ships to combine the functions of a dock ship with those of a Ro-Ro and heavy lift vessel. After several successful offshore and salvage projects in the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf Coast of the United States, MV Blue Giant was sold in 2011 to the OIG Group. Since delivery the vessel has been continuously under the technical management of Harren & Partner. In 2017 during the ice-free summer months the vessel was used for extensive maintenance and repair work on a gas platform in the Pechora Sea, Russia.

The offshore construction vessel (length 179.63 m, breadth 25.40 m) has a variety of special features. For example its dynamic positioning system (DP2). This allows for fast and efficient changes of location without the need for tugs. With a combined crane capacity of up to 700 t and one height extended crane up to 60 m, MV Blue Giant is able to salvage containers from the top layers. Furthermore the vessel is equipped with a cabin block which can accommodate up to 200 people, a moon pool, a helideck and a fire fighting system reaching a distance of 180 m. Heiko Felderhoff, Managing Director of Harren & Partner, underlines the flexibility of MV Blue Giant: “It’s a highly adaptable ship that can also be used as an emergency response vessel. There are few things that it can’t do,” he enthuses.

Following its ten-year class renewal in Bremerhaven, MV Blue Giant will be in perfect shape to meet the upcoming challenges. Currently, Harren & Partner is holding intensive talks about future projects.
