Menlo Logistics Marks Second Singapore Expansion in Two Years; Opens New 50,000 m2 Warehousing and Distribution Centre at Mapletree Benoi Logistics Hub

S$127 Million Logistics Hub Represents Latest Collaboration Between Menlo and Leading Singapore Logistics Real Estate Provider Mapletree Logistics Trust

SAN FRANCISO and SINGAPORE — May 6, 2014 — Menlo Logistics (Menlo), the US$1.5 billion global logistics and supply chain management subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), today will formerly dedicate its new state-of-the-art warehousing and distribution management centre at 21 Benoi Sector Singapore, 629853.

The new 50,000-square-meter Benoi centre brings the company’s footprint in Singapore to eight facilities totaling 219,700 square meters. The expansion spotlights Menlo’s commitment to investing in the growing market for distribution services in Singapore, and the country’s rising prominence as a strategic logistics hub for Asia.

“Singapore and the regional Asia markets are some of our fastest growing sectors, due in large part to our strong market share and industry-specific expertise in wine and spirits distribution,” said Robert L. Bianco Jr., president of San Francisco, California-based Menlo Logistics, who will headline Menlo’s dedication ceremony here today. “Our long-term lease for this facility with our real estate partner, Mapletree Logistics Trust, is another demonstration of Menlo’s commitment to the Singapore market, not only in wine and spirits, but also in distribution capacity for automotive, consumer electronics and apparel, aerospace and industrial. We are investing to grow with our customers.”

Menlo is a leading global provider of logistics, transportation management and supply chain services with operations on five continents. Established in Singapore over a decade ago, the company’s services range from dedicated contract logistics to warehousing, distribution and transportation management; supply chain engineering and other value-added services across multiple industries.

Representing a capital investment of S$127 million by Mapletree Logistics Trust (MLT), the new distribution centre with a gross floor area of 92,500 square meters features specialized warehousing capabilities for servicing the global wine and spirits industry. It also supports the warehousing and logistics requirements of various clients engaged in a variety of other industries for which Singapore is a growing market. The facility has been awarded the prestigious Building and Construction Authority’s Green Mark Platinum Award, the highest certification for sustainable buildings in Singapore.

The Benoi facility elevates Menlo to be the largest tenant of MLT, with leased warehouse space across seven properties in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China, noted Ms. Ng Kiat, Chief Executive Officer of Mapletree Logistics Trust Management Ltd, the manager of MLT.

“We have been working with Menlo, our valued customer, over the last nine years to support its continued growth across Asia. Menlo’s commitment to this project and our growing relationship underscore MLT’s position as a preferred partner of choice for customers seeking quality logistics real estate solutions in the region. We look forward to strengthening this partnership further as Menlo continues on its growth path,” said Ms. Ng. “This redevelopment project has transformed Benoi Logistics Hub from an old, single-story warehouse into a modern, five-story ramp-up facility with significantly improved efficiency and capabilities. We will continue to look out for asset enhancement or redevelopment opportunities that are aligned with the expansion needs of our customers like Menlo, while concurrently unlocking additional value from our portfolio,” she added.

“Our customers expect consistent, efficient, high-quality service, and this new facility, coupled with our commitment to sustainable business practices and Lean continuous improvement, delivers on that promise,” noted Menlo’s Bianco.

“When Pernod Ricard, Asia Pacific Breweries, Bacardi and Tradall, all global leading wine and spirits distributors, require either secured, temperature-controlled or ambient warehousing, we can provide that service along with time-sensitive fulfillment and delivery to Singapore and throughout the region,” Bianco added. “And with the resources and capabilities we now have at Benoi, we can service our clients faster and more efficiently than before.”

Mr. Bianco also cited the support of Singapore Customs and its promotion of prudent regulatory policies that protect the country while encouraging free and open trade. “Initiatives like Singapore Customs’ Secure Trade Partnership program, which provide sensible regulation and a secure environment for trade, are a major incentive for expansion. It’s a key reason why we have continued to invest and build capacity here,” he commented.

“We are delighted to have fostered a close Customs-Business partnership with Menlo Logistics since 2002,” said Mr. Lim Teck Leong, Deputy Director-General, Compliance and Facilitation, Singapore Customs. “Over the years, Menlo has participated actively in the various schemes and licences offered by Singapore Customs to safeguard the integrity and security of the supply chain in Singapore.”

The opening of the new Benoi facility come on the heels of Menlo’s new Sunview Way distribution centre, which opened in November 2012. Menlo’s existing network of seven facilities is located throughout Singapore with 400 employees and provides dedicated and multi-client inventory and distribution management. The company services over 200 Singapore businesses and multi-national companies in sectors such as automotive, high-tech, consumer goods, industrial, aerospace and wine and spirits distribution. The Benoi facility will serve as one of Menlo’s most advanced warehouses for storage and distribution, high-value-added services like picking and packing operations, customized labeling and return management services. More than 100 employees will support its multi-disciplined operations

Menlo also operates additional multi-client logistics facilities in Southeast Asia, as well as China, India, Australia, North America and Europe.

Menlo’s Partnership with ArjoHuntleigh Brings Fruitful Results

Amsterdam 14th April, 2014

Menlo Worldwide Logistics this month marked its 7th year as ArjoHuntleigh’s  global logistics and distribution partner.  The two companies provide an interesting case study that demonstrates the value of a business relationship built on trust and a common vision which at its core emphasizes a continuous improvement ethic that extends deeply into both organizations.

A leader in the manufacture of medical equipment for people with reduced mobility, ArjoHuntleigh focuses on developing mutually beneficial supplier relationships. Menlo, the global logistics and supply chain management unit of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) has built its customer solutions on a formalized process and proven tools for driving Lean continuous improvement throughout its service portfolio – and into its customer’s supply chain operations. The match has been undeniably successful.

In providing for the care of people who require assistance with mobility ArjoHuntleigh focuses on preventing the preventable and assisting their customers in an increased efficiency.  As such it constantly strives to do the same with its own processes and supply chain.

After a recent period of acquiring companies across the world that manufacture complimentary equipment, ArjoHuntleigh has concentrated on building one corporate structure and one supply chain, while always promoting the elimination of waste and increased efficiency.  “Our supply chain strategy is now concentrated on four major aspects,” explains, Christian Lambrant, the company’s Global Logistics Director, “Optimizing our plant footprint, finding the right suppliers, reducing working capital and using Lean techniques to eliminate waste.  In Menlo we found a logistics service supplier whose values are consistent with our own; whose business philosophy matches ours and whose willingness to develop its global capabilities are in-line with our own growth strategy.”

Menlo, which offers warehousing and transportation management services as well as integrated 3PL and 4PL logistics solutions, has as its core philosophy a value-driven supply chain transformation concept.  The company employs Lean methodologies to achieve a culture of continuous improvement which unites manufacturer and supplier in a mutual optimization exercise.  This method empowers employees of both parties to make beneficial changes to the supply chain process.

Tony Gunn is Menlo’s Managing Director, Europe.  He notes, “Many 3PL/shipper engagements are tactical rather than strategic.  Often shippers, in the main driven by their procurement functions focusing on cost reduction, make short-term choices based on volatile market demands.  In the process they lose sight of greater efficiencies that can transpire from a longer-term partnership with a logistics supplier.”

Menlo and ArjoHuntleigh share a mutual drive to improve supply chain processes as the parameters of change in market forces and the economic environment constantly fluctuate.  Long-term relationships made up of such like-minded organizations as these are proven to be the most successfull in adapting to on-going, challenging business circumstances.

MENLO CONTINUES INTEGRATION OF MAQUET’S LOGISTICS FUNCTION AT A CENTRALIZED EUROPEAN HUB

MAQUET is a global leader in the provision of medical systems and utilizes the supply chain management expertise of Menlo Worldwide Logistics for the distribution of a variety of its products across Europe.  MAQUET  belongs to Getinge group in Sweden which acquired the French domiciled company, Datascope in 2009. Menlo has been tasked with integrating the additional product supply requirements into Menlo’s logistics hub in Eersel, Netherlands, where much of MAQUET’s existing inventory is handled.

Amsterdam, 31st  March 2014

Menlo, the global logistics and supply chain management unit of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), has implemented the second stage of the planned centralization of warehousing  activities for the former Datascope’s finished goods.  This move, completed in September, has freed up space at MAQUET’s La Ciotat facility on the Mediterranean coast of France, which enables an expansion of the manufacturing capacity there.  The former Datascope product range is now centrally distributed across Europe from Eersel, as are the other brands produced by the Getinge group of companies, including MAQUET and ArjoHuntleigh.

“The integration of inventory management and the distribution function of Datascope’s product lines with those of our group’s existing output has been critical to us in realizing the economies of scale that in part motivated our acquisition, “ explains Frank Kozar, Vice President Global Supply Chain at MAQUET. “By employing the services of a tried and trusted logistics partner in Menlo, we have ensured that the integration process was achieved successfully.  After the Datascope purchase five years ago, we first moved the European warehouse and distribution function for our US manufactured product lines to Menlo’s facility.  The initial plan has now come to fruition this similar move of our French produced medical devices ,” he said.

In commenting on the conclusion of the two-phase process centered at one of Menlo’s key multi-user facilities in Eersel, Tony Gunn, Menlo’s Managing Director, Europe commented, “The medical device sector creates demands of logistics providers that are particular and challenging.  The sector is fast becoming a core vertical for us at Menlo as a result of our culture that values long-term commitment to customer relationships. Our abilities to adapt rapidly to changing market demands are also especially relevant to this sector.  We are excited by the possibilities of increased efficiency we have brought to MAQUET’s operation as a whole, aiding the company to continue its market expansion in Europe and globally.”

In addition to reduced costs and increased inventory accuracy and visibility for MAQUET, Menlo contributes its expertise in the implementation of Lean principles to supply chain management; something that is strongly valued by MAQUET and others in the Getinge group.

Menlo Promotes Rotterdam as Key Logistics Euro-Hub

With nearly 30% of Northern Europe’s annual container imports and exports passing through the Port of Rotterdam, the region is unsurprisingly a major focal point for manufacturers and retailers European supply chain operations.  Menlo recognises this demand for warehouse activity, value-added logistics and distribution services by maintaining a multi-user facility that is key to its European network.

Rotterdam, 24th March 2014

Menlo Worldwide Logistics, the global logistics and supply chain management unit of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) has had a presence in Rotterdam since the company commenced its European operations in January 2003.  It is now looking to develop its business at the 8,500 square metre facility still further.  While Menlo’s current Rotterdam-based customers lie predominantly within the high tech sector, the logistics capabilities of its personnel and suitability of the warehouse, are also geared to handling life sciences, lifestyle and e-commerce product.

Managing Director in Europe, Tony Gunn highlights Menlo’s enthusiasm for the Rotterdam location, “57% of all Asian and American sourced products have a European Distribution Centre (EDC) located in the Netherlands and a significant proportion of these are in the Rotterdam region.  Part of the reason for this high concentration is the flexibility that the location allows dynamic supply chains,” he explains.  “European consumer markets are changeable and our customers need to be able to react effectively to alterations in both sourcing and demand patterns.  Menlo understands this well, working with our customers to fine-tune their supply chain solutions.  As Rotterdam is so much at the heart of the Europe’s transport infrastructure our options in making such changes are greatly enhanced.”

Indeed with key nodes in that transport network such as Schiphol, Brussels, Aachen and Dusseldorf all within a two hour drive (and Frankfurt just four) and the hubs of the major freight integrators all less than an hour away, Menlo’s Rotterdam base ensures the physical dimension of supply chain flexibility.  Operations within the facility also mirror this crucial adaptability as Menlo’s core philosophy is one of continuous improvement.  Committed to identifying and driving out waste, in terms of time, resource and cost, from the logistics process, Menlo’s focus on the Lean approach to supply chain management is central to the company’s success not just in Rotterdam but worldwide.

Menlo Launch Freight Brokerage Service in Europe

Menlo Freight Brokerage is a new transportation service which extends the 3PL warehousing and supply chain management services portfolio of Menlo Logistics in Europe. This dedicated freight brokerage operation provides cost-effective multimodal transportation booking and management solutions supporting the freight transport needs of commercial and industrial businesses throughout Europe

Amsterdam, 12th March 2014

Based at Menlo’s European headquarters in Amsterdam and operated by a specially recruited team of experienced transport managers, Menlo Freight Brokerage has undergone a year of preparation and trial operation and is now being launched Europe-wide.

“Menlo has operated a successful and growing freight brokerage operation in North America since 2007 under our sister company, Con-way Multimodal,” noted Tony Gunn managing director for Menlo Logistics in Europe.  “We have adopted best practices from our North American colleagues and combined those with our Lean tools and a team of European transport specialists to create a unique service offering for European shippers.  We are confident that our philosophy of reducing cost and minimising waste in the freight transport process will appeal to the European market for freight brokerage services. The test strategy we have employed over the past twelve months has validated this approach and we are very pleased with the up-take from a wide range of customers.”

New Service Offering Gaining Market Traction

Indeed the nascent European Freight Brokerage operation, at the end of its trial period is now managing over five hundred shipments per month across all types of freight and modes of transport including; truckloads, parcels, groupage, full containers and LCL, air freight and ocean shipments.  The majority of the volume has been intra-Europe in extent but Asian and North American destined cargo has also been handled.

Gunn added that Menlo expects a rapid growth in volumes in the future but for the modal mix to be in line with that experienced so far.  “Key to our service offering is a multimodal, consultative approach to our customers’ transport needs. We will advise the optimum routing and modal mix for any given European shipment profile.  Our emphasis is on value, of which price is a component but not everything, which is consistent with the value-add approach Menlo takes with all of our supply chain offerings. This product is highly complementary to our portfolio and adds a capability which our customers have been inquiring for some time.”

Europe Launch Complements Menlo’s Global Transportation Management Strategy

The launch Menlo Freight Brokerage in Europe also is in line with Menlo’s larger global strategy of building consistent, reliable freight brokerage capabilities across and within the world’s geographies.  Explains Tommy Barnes, president of Menlo’s U.S.-based brokerage operation Con-way Multimodal: “Geographic diversification is a key part of our strategic vision. By extending our brokerage services into Europe, we can tap a new market and support existing Menlo operations and customers in securing flexible, cost-efficient transportation capacity for customers. Through our combined efforts, we should be able to further reduce costs and take additional waste out of customers’ supply chains. Our Europe expansion supports Menlo’s overall business growth goals and provides the opportunity to extend our Lean process improvement capabilities into a critical new area for our clients.”

For its European transportation management system, Menlo Freight Brokerage uses CargoWise, which is a proven technology platform and has solid daily transportation management functionality for both domestic and international shipments.  Menlo’s Europe brokerage team also liaises with its U.S. brokerage counterparts, which allows for synergies and the development of collaborative service solutions for global customers with brokerage needs in both the U.S. and Europe.

Dedicated European Brokerage Operation Established in Amsterdam

The European freight brokerage operation is based at Menlo’s offices in Amsterdam and is headed up by Richard de Ritter who has eight years with Menlo managing transport solutions for customers of the Company’s logistics services.  de Ritter’s career stretches over nearly twenty years working for blue-chip supply chain service providers and container transport operators.

He cites the significant advantages Menlo’s new brokerage service gains from Menlo’s long-standing logistics and supply chain management business in Europe.  “We are able to leverage the wealth of experience and knowledge of the European transportation and logistics market already existing within the Menlo organisation,” highlights de Ritter.  “This provides the opportunity for Brokerage customers to learn about and consider the broader logistics services of Menlo.”

A core value of the company’s operation is a commitment to waste reduction and the philosophy of pruning processes were savings in both time and money can be identified.  Menlo sees this aspect as a key differentiator of its service when compared with brokers that merely quote a rate and find a truck. Concludes Menlo Europe’s Gunn: “The transport element of the supply chain is often over-looked as a link to be managed with careful analysis of cost versus performance and the necessary amount of visibility.  We are bringing a higher degree of management standards to a process that many in the market see as simple trucking.”

‘Pick to Light Carts’ Set to Improve Order Productivity

Menlo Worldwide Logistics is implementing a radical new product picking regime involving ‘Pick to Light Carts’ developed by warehouse system integration specialist Inther Logistics Engineering.  The system has been operational at the global logistics company’s Maastricht (Netherlands) facility since early December and is to be rolled out across its international network in the coming months.

Amsterdam, 9 January, 2014

Inther - Pick to Light Cart Jan13

Menlo and Inther have been working on the new system’s development for 3 months and have now completed successful trials with the ‘Go Live’ implemented for a medical device client in early December.  Menlo’s Maastricht facility in the Netherlands is the first operation to bring the system into operation, and will assist Menlo in processing some 60,000 orders per year for this particular client.  Initial measurements of the system’s performance show overall improvement in productivity of up to 20%.

With guidance lights on the reception bins of picking carts, which move from aisle to aisle, rather than on the storage racking, product location display and confirmation buttons are also positioned on the carts. This configuration allows operators to locate and secure product more quickly than more traditional picking methods. Although existing carts can be adapted to utilise the new equipment, Menlo have chosen to invest in new carts, which can also accommodate 16% more orders and have a facility to carry larger, or irregular out-sized items.

Menlo’s Functional IT Consultant Michel Kil is excited by the new system, “We have data that is already showing savings of 2 to 3 hours per day just on the picking list printing process, a further 30 minutes on manual order consolidation and picking performance improvements of up to 50%.  There is some additional time required for build and breakdown of the cart but overall we are experiencing consistent levels of between 15 and 20% increased productivity.  This is indeed impressive.”

The efficiencies inherent in the new Inther system start with the consolidation of orders at the beginning of each shift.  Orders can be sequenced in batches of 21 at a time, which is much more effective than using the picking list method.  Rob Winnen, Inther’s Project Manager explains more, “Yet more time is saved as the cart’s alert buttons enable the operator to report product discrepancies from the rack location before moving on to the next item with no loss of time.  The report is immediately logged at a discrepancy station for resolution without disruption to the picking schedule.”

Kil also comments on the integration of ‘Pick to Light’ with Menlo’s global data centre back-up facility in Portland, Oregon.  “We aren’t experiencing any latency in data communication and the strong data security features provide confidence and operational advantage.  The global data centre handles order input from across Menlo’s international operation and will aid the possible adoption of ‘Pick to Light’ at our Asian and American sites in the future.”

Winnen says Inther is also looking to the future with adaptations to the system.  “We are already working on a number of variants, including utilising the system in reverse to increase the efficiency of ‘put away’ processes.”

These Lean techniques, Menlo has found, enable its staff to more easily align their values with those of their customers. “They help us maintain our commitment to continuous improvement in managing supply chains, which has been, and will remain crucial to our success in an increasingly competitive environment, noted Gunn. ”These capabilities will continue to help differentiate Menlo in the pan-European market and provide the foundation to build on our momentum from a successful 2013.”

A 3PL’s Battle with Commoditisation – Menlo’s Solution

Amsterdam 25th November 2013

Menlo’s Tony Gunn tackled the vexing issue facing many 3PL’s today in his presentation at the eyefortransport’s 3PL Summit in Amsterdam last week. Supported by a valued Menlo customer from the medical technology sector he concluded that open collaboration between shipper and 3PL creates long-term relationships that result in the most value for both parties

Gunn, Menlo’s Managing Director in Europe, was also at pains to explain that a focus on reduced costs in the supply chain need not be at the expense of innovation; rather that the later can drive the former through the use of a structured, continuous improvement programme.

Menlo, the global logistics and supply chain management unit of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) offers supply chain and transportation management services as well at 3PL and 4PL logistics solutions to a large number of companies in a variety of vertical sectors across the globe.  However Gunn drew on his Company’s experience with a leading medical technology supplier to help answerer the question, ‘How can the 3PL industry profitably innovate and win the battle against commoditisation?’

Gunn noted that many 3PL/shipper engagements are tactical rather than strategic.  “Often shippers, in the main driven by their procurement functions focussing on cost reduction, make short-term choices based on volatile market demands.  In the process they lose sight of greater efficiencies that can transpire from longer-term commitments to a logistics supplier,” he noted and proposes a switch in focus from cost to quality and innovative relationships.

The Menlo executive outlined a value-driven supply chain transformation concept that, in his Company’s case employs the Lean methodology’ to achieve a culture of continuous improvement which unites shipper and 3PL in a mutual optimisation exercise.  This method empowers employees of both parties to make beneficial changes to the supply chain process.

In the case of the medical technology client, it was revealed that such an approach produced supply chain savings of 16% in warehouse costs over a twenty-four month period. In Global Forwarding Management some 56% and 10% cost reductions were achieved across two logistics scenarios respectively.  The same analysis saw KPI performances of over 99% when measuring ‘ship on time’, receiving and inventory accuracy functions.  There were corresponding innovations in warehouse design and supply chain optimisation.  The latter featuring shipment consolidation, improved planning to remove redundant transport legs and more efficient mode utilisation.

Menlo Continues its Support of Degree Course in Supply Chain Management

Amsterdam, 25 October, 2013

Menlo Worldwide Logistics (Menlo), the global logistics subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), is continuing its commitment to academic training in the field of supply chain and logistics management. This resolution was underlined recently at Tilburg University’s (Neth.) Supply Chain Management Masters Degree Ceremony, where Menlo representative Jeroen Tempels presented the Menlo Best Thesis Award.

Tempels, who is Menlo’s General Manager, Central Europe congratulated the successful student, “This year’s winner of the Menlo Award is Koen Verburg, whose thesis on the sub-contracting decision making process was thought by the judges to be particularly functional in its findings and useable by the company, IFF, which was the subject of Koen’s case study.  In sponsoring the Award Menlo is particularly keen to encourage the application of academic research to practical supply chain challenges.  We congratulate Koen on his achievement”.

The full title of the winning thesis is Subcontracting Decision Making: Developing an Appropriate Subcontracting Decision Making Process for IFF’s Spray Dry Technology Line.  Chair of the judging panel Professor G.C.J.M. Vos also praised the winner, “Joen’s research approach, both qualitative and quantitative, can be used by other companies that want to improve their product’s quality and lead time.”

The Menlo Best Thesis award is primarily designed to inspire students to excel in the study and research of logistics processes and to encourage innovative thinking in the development of more efficient performance within the supply chain.  These principles are very much aligned with Menlo’s own operating philosophy centred on continuous improvement.  The company is equally proud of its continued support of Tilburg University’s excellent course and the dedication of the students who each year attain their degree education there.

Second prize went to Mark Gerritsen for his thesis entitled Sustainability of the Biodiesel Industry: The Impact of Strategic Decisions of the Biodiesel Producer on the Sustainability Characteristics of the Biodiesel Supply Chain.

NYX’s CFO, Arash Khazei explained some of his company’s thinking in deciding to entrust the distribution operation to Menlo, “Because of our scheduled expansion in the European market, we require a truly flexible partner that can be light on its feet when challenged to service new markets and to re-engineer a supply chain with minimum delay.  In Menlo we recognised a logistics specialist that we believe has both a cultural fit with NYX when it comes to continuously improving process, and has a hands-on approach to solution provision.”

Over the initial few months of working for NYX, Menlo is already supplying its market outlets in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, France, the UK, Spain, Ireland, Russia and Dubai.  Menlo’s Managing Director in Europe, Tony Gunn comments, “We are obviously set for a rapidly developing supply chain mix with NYX in the future.  We believe that our reputation for proven continuous improvement will help us meet these challenges.  We also hope that the service platform we establish for NYX will open doors for us in the personal care product sector of the market.”
