Menlo Receives Performance Award from ATM Provider

Diebold, a leading provider of integrated self-service delivery and security systems has awarded Menlo Worldwide Logistics its Silver Certification for logistics services.  The global operation is centered on three ‘control towers’ including Menlo’s facility in Budapest.

Amsterdam, 2nd July 2013

Innovative solutions to complex supply chain problems and the application of Lean tools and methodologies to improve processes and remove waste has garnered Menlo this prestigious award from Diebold, Incorporated as a top-performing logistics services provider.  Diebold’s award recognises Menlo for innovation, cost savings and value delivered in support of the Company’s cost alignment strategies.

Menlo, the global logistics and supply chain management unit of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) has been a Diebold global supply chain partner since 2007.  Today, Menlo provides Diebold with strategic 4PL supply chain engineering and network optimization, as well as functional, day-to-day third party logistics (3PL) services. Among the services provided are global transportation procurement and management.

One of the three “control tower” operations from which Menlo services Diebold’s global supply chain is based in Budapest, where Menlo’s facility has been operational for several years.  From here Menlo manages all tactical operations for shipments that cover within domestic Europe, and all intercontinental shipments both inbound and outbound from Budapest. The two other ‘control towers’ are located in Auburn Hills, Michigan within the United States and within Shanghai, China.

“Menlo provides Diebold with comprehensive solutions that meet our needs for strategic and tactical supply chain operations support, on a global basis,” said Linda Parcher,

vice-president and chief supply chain officer, Diebold. “During the past six years, through Menlo’s leadership applying Lean continuous improvement methods, we have realized substantial improvements in our supply chain operating systems, as well as design and process innovations that have elevated supply chain performance.”

“The most difficult task for a logistics provider is demonstrating, year-in-and–year-out, the rigor and discipline to examine the solutions we provide to customers, and then re-engineer them in a structured, continuous effort to improve and renew the value,” noted Robert L. Bianco, Jr., president, Menlo Worldwide Logistics.  “I am most proud of this honor from Diebold because it recognizes that even after six years of hard work, collaborative and constructive change, our team is still innovating, and applying our Lean tools to find new opportunities to create value and reduce costs.”

The application of Lean principles to supply chain management is central to Menlo’s service offering in Europe.  “Optimizing the components of a single process does not necessarily mean that the entire supply chain will be optimized as a result.  It is the focus on continuous improvement, which is central to Lean that makes the concept so successful in eliminating waste that exists today,” said Menlo Europe’s Managing Director, Tony Gunn.

Menlo Completes Registered Agent Certification for Dutch Facilities

Amsterdam, 16th May, 2013

Menlo Worldwide Logistics (Menlo), the global logistics subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) has recently completed the certification process for its Rotterdam facility and can now confirm that all four of its operating sites in the Netherlands are certified as ‘Regulated Agent’ Airfreight.

The audit was carried out by the Dutch Government agency, the Royal Marechaussee and means that Menlo’s establishments at Amsterdam, Eersel and Maastricht as well as Rotterdam are registered on the European Union database.

The certificate, which is valid for five years, allows Menlo facilities a waiver from all additional physical security inspections of airfreight shipments as well as any additional contextual inspections of airfreight documentation.  These advantages will in turn deliver lower administration costs for customers and avoid potential delays in processing airfreight shipments.

In welcoming the announcement, Tony Gunn, Menlo’s MD in Europe said, “The certification process and audit have been achieved through dedicated teamwork.  Specific subject matter expertise and a commitment to excellence have been required in order to meet the operational conditions and security requirements of the legislation.  I would like to thank the team and, in particular Jos Giele, our Director of Corporate Security for their hard work in attaining this significant certification.  It adds further to the superior level of service that Menlo can offer its customers in Europe.

certification for its work in 2012. Menlo China has received the China Logistics Innovation Award, the China Business Award for Logistics Services and has been awarded Lean Bronze Certification, an internal award.

2012 China Logistics Innovation Award

Menlo China received the 2012 China Logistics Innovation Award from China Logistics and Purchasing (CLP) magazine in recognition of the company’s 4PL capabilities and Lean methodology.

The China Logistics Innovation Award, now in its 10th year, honors China-based logistics providers whose work over the calendar year embodies the spirit of innovation in the industry. Noting that China’s own logistics industry is still developing, albeit rapidly, Mr. He Liming, head of the CLP association, said, “Menlo’s solution for a Financial and Security equipment manufacturing client impressed us as something we could learn from. It was client-focused, creative and innovative. Using 4PL and Lean methodology and customizing a package to the customer’s needs, Menlo enabled the client to substantially decrease production costs– exactly what we were looking for.”

CLP magazine is the publication of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP), the government logistics and purchasing institution.

China Business Award for Logistics Services

The Shanghai Business Review’s (SBR) China Business Awards recognize international companies in China in the business services sectors that have excelled or in some way made a significant mark. SBR is the city’s leading English language business magazine.

“The jury for the Logistics Services award selected Menlo for several reasons: the comprehensive nature of your services throughout the supply chain, the recognized innovative nature of your 3PL and 4PL solutions, as well as awards from other institutions,” said SBR editor and China Business Awards juror Thomas McKinley.

Menlo Lean Bronze Certification

Menlo China’s Xinqiao, Shanghai, warehouse has been awarded Lean Bronze Certification by the Menlo Global Lean Team. The warehouse runs Mary Kay Cosmetics’ warehousing, order fulfillment and distribution and is Menlo’s first warehouse in China to receive this certification.

“The goal of implementing Lean methodology is to maximize customer value while minimizing waste. Achieving the bronze level means that the warehouse has the appropriate tools and physical elements in place to enable them to do this,” said Armando Farinas, Lean Sensei, Menlo Global Lean Team. Bronze is the first level in Menlo’s Lean certification process, which is based on Lean industry standards but customized for Menlo. There are five levels altogether, culminating in Diamond.

“Lean certification gives both Menlo and our client a strategic advantage,” said Farinas. “By reducing waste, we reduce our costs. We pass on that cost savings to the client, enabling them to supply the market with the highest quality products at a lower price and increase their market share.”

3. Thomas Pan, Managing Director North Asia, received the China Logistics Innovation award from China Logistics & Purchasing magazine. The award was given in recognition of the company’s 4PL capabilities and Lean methodology.

Thomas Pan, Menlo’s Managing Director, North Asia, said, “We’re delighted to receive both the external recognition — particularly from industry leaders like CLP and SBR – and the internal certification. Our value to clients is our combination of in-depth local knowledge from an experienced local team with our parent company’s expertise in areas such as Lean, which results in best-in-class customer solutions.”

Menlo Worldwide Logistics (China) Ltd provides professional, top-of-the-line logistics solutions developed with in-depth local knowledge, delivering operationally effective, cost efficient results via a wide-reaching network of offices, warehouses and logistics centers in 110 cities throughout China. Menlo Grows its Logistics Offering in the Medical Device Sector

Amsterdam, 14 February 2013

Menlo Worldwide Logistics (Menlo) is the global logistics subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) providing supply chain management services to a variety of manufacturing and retail industries.  Menlo’s recent growth in the healthcare sector and, in particular in the supply chain management of medical devices has been further confirmed by the contract signing for logistics service provision in Europe to specialist defibrillator manufacturer, Physio Control.

Physio-Control, owned by private equity company Bain Capital, is the world leader in the development, manufacture, sale and service of external defibrillators, monitors and emergency medical response products.  It supplies tools of the highest quality to help clinicians and emergency responders, throughout the world.

Menlo will utilise its multi-user facility in Maastricht (Netherlands) to manage and stage Physio Control’s inbound inventory for Europe, coming chiefly from the US.  At the Maastricht Logistics Centre Menlo will then carry-out light assembly work, managing warehouse services and fulfilling orders for delivery throughout Europe.  The facility is a focus for Menlo’s particular propensity to process medical devices and the skill-sets especially required to manage such complex supply chains.

Physio Control’s Director, CPR Products Operations/EMEA Supply Chain, Project Lead Paul Rasmusson commented on the arrangement, “Menlo’s multi-user option at Maastricht played a large part in our decision.  We foresee significant cost-savings resulting from the flexibility this facility affords. Menlo is also reassuringly reactive to our changing supply chain needs, a consequence I believe of their commitment to continuous improvement inherent in the Lean philosophy that runs throughout the organisation.”

The need for precision in delivery performance and efficiency throughout its supply chain is self-evident with products of this nature and Menlo’s track record in handling medical devices and other healthcare products was a primary reason for Physio Control to choose the logistics supplier for its European distribution and transport management, commented Mr. Rasmusson.

Menlo’s service provision also includes Physio Control staff embedded in the Menlo operation to ensure the most efficient of client-supplier communication and rapid response to the challenging dynamics of the market.

In welcoming the expansion in Menlo business in the sector, Managing Director Europe, Tony Gunn, said, “The medical device market has many demanding facets.  We feel that Menlo’s particular culture of a long-term approach to customer relationships and our ability to adapt to their changing needs is particularly relevant to this sector.   What we are able to provide for Physio Control at Maastricht is not a just a state-of-the art facility but the opportunity to plug straight into established competencies and infrastructure without undue investment- and that is what 3PL benefits are all about,” he added.

The awards jury, under the direction of Professor Vos, judged Lotte’s thesis as the winner.  “The student formulated a well-defined research question based on the academic literature. Her thesis contains a highly-critical analysis of the literature. The benchmark study was carried out in a structured way and presented clearly. The thesis provided an extremely useful tool for application in practice and the client (a European-wide producer of consumer goods) has already implemented a number of aspects.

In presenting the award to Lotte, Jeroen Tempels Menlo’s General Manager, Central Europe commented, “We intend our sponsorship of this best thesis award to benefit a generation of talented students and reward excellence in their course work.  Central to Menlo’s business philosophy is the concept of continuous improvement and we believe our investment in academic research and education at two major universities in the USA, as well as Tilburg and others around the world is in keeping with this philosophy.  Menlo will continue to recognize and reward outstanding performance wherever it is encountered within the logistics field”.

Placed second in the award standings was Rutger Soffers, whose topic was ‘Towards modular residential care’ and third place went to Sanne Jansen, who produced a thesis entitled ‘Information sharing to reduce supplier’s delivery times’.
