GEODIS continues IATA CEIV program with eight sites in Europe now certified

By the end of 2022, GEODIS had received the IATA CEIV Pharma certification in 7 additional sites in EUROPE on top of the already existing site in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Having this certification ensures that facilities, equipment, operations and staff comply with the appropriate applicable standards, guidelines and regulations expected from a pharmaceutical manufacturer. This industry-wide standard aims to extend industry best practice and achieve a globally acceptable standardization. By forming a common baseline from existing regulation and standards, this certification ensures international and national compliance to safeguard  product integrity while addressing specific air cargo needs in pharma logistics.

Pharma projects for GEODIS are looking extremely promising entering 2023 and will benefit further from IATA CEIV certification at the following sites in the EUROPE region: London, UK; Manchester, UK; Frankfurt, Germany; Arlanda, Sweden; Budapest, Hungary; Warsaw, Poland; Brussels, Belgium; and the already validated site in Amsterdam, Netherlands, which gained certification in December, 2021.

Thomas Kraus, GEODIS’ President & CEO of the EUROPE Region said, “Having 8 sites CEIV-certified within 1 year demonstrates the commitment of the EUROPE Region of GEODIS to pharma logistics excellence. Our goal is to be an essential part of the growing GEODIS pharma network worldwide for the sole benefit of our pharma customers and the patients using their products.”

GEODIS partners with Volvo Australia to pilot electric trucks for freight forwarding

The pilot program seeks to establish more sustainable road networks for freight forwarding in Australia

GEODIS, a global leader in the transport and logistics sector, has joined hands with Volvo Australia to pilot the first Fully Electric (FE) variant truck for freight forwarding within the Australian market. This strategic partnership will deploy Volvo’s FE model trucks – powered by both solar energy and energy-efficient charging systems – as part of a concerted effort to support long-term customers with sustainable delivery solutions to complement existing freight forwarding services across the local market.

The Volvo FE truck is powered by ABB’s state-of-the-art charging infrastructure, which not only accelerates charging but also enables the vehicle to draw power from existing solar infrastructure. As part of the pilot program, GEODIS will be assessing factors, including the driving range, the suitability for heavy loads of up to 7,500 kilograms to be transported across 200-kilometer ranges within metropolitan areas via FE trucks before committing to a larger-scale roll-out across its fleet in Australia. The full integration of these trucks into GEODIS’ Australian fleet is set to completely remove fine particles and nitrogen oxide, in addition to ensuring a 95 percent reduction in direct carbon emissions, compared to existing diesel vehicles performing the same function.

“We recognize the growing importance of integrating both sustainable and innovative solutions into the supply chain ecosystem, especially as more of our customers look to us to transport their cargo in an ethical and sustainable manner,” said Stuart Asplet, Sub-Regional Managing Director, Pacific at GEODIS. “This initiative serves not only as a testament to our long-standing relationship with Volvo but also to our collective vision to decarbonize the supply chain industry, even as we continue to expand our services to meet evolving customer needs. We look forward to formalizing many more of such milestones as we continue to take steps forward to reduce our impact on the environment.”

As part of a long-term plan to decarbonize the supply chain, GEODIS has also built a robust ecosystem to ensure future FE trucks can be fully optimized across its road network. With the support of Volvo Australia’s e-mobility team, GEODIS has upskilled its drivers with electric-vehicle training and designed holistic route and load planning processes to get the most efficient use of the assets. Partners like Goodman Group were also brought on board to install solar panels and charging infrastructure across GEODIS’ facilities, paving the way for the further electrification of the GEODIS fleet.

“We are thrilled to be working with GEODIS on this pilot program to extend our Volvo FE fleet within the Australian heavy vehicle market. Bringing low-carbon and more circular transport solutions has always been a key priority for us, and this strategic partnership is one of the many steps that we are taking to build a more energy-efficient transport ecosystem for the market. By developing lower-emissions and safer transport solutions, we hope to be able to provide our customers and their stakeholders the ability to also reach their sustainability targets,” said. Tim Camilleri, Electromobility Manager, Volvo Group Australia

GEODIS has also been ramping up the implementation of other low-carbon transport systems, including building efficient, multimodal transport networks – that tap into the use of rail, short sea shipping, and inland waterways – and fully optimizing the volume and payload of fleets. GEODIS has also launched its Sustainable Fuel Program worldwide, which aims to accelerate the use of alternative and renewable fuels, including marine fuels, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

GEODIS Opens New Cross-dock Facility for Conforama in Poland

French home furnishings retailer benefits from new location for its consolidation of supplies from Eastern Europe operated by long-term logistics distribution partner GEODIS.

Conforama has partnered with GEODIS for both consolidation and distribution services to optimize and organize the delivery of its products manufactured and assembled at twenty sites in Poland, Romania, and Slovakia, before being distributed to its 167 retail outlets throughout France.

Operations that for Conforama have been carried out for the past eight years at the Wroclaw site have been transferred to a new location in Pietrzykowice in the southwestern region of Lower Silesia. The new 51,000 square meters (sqm) facility answers all Conforama’s needs. It also offers a possibility to extend the space by a further 17,000 sqm.

The site offers many advantages for Conforama, especially direct access to road networks for delivery to stores in France, and a modern construction with benefits in terms of energy savings and safe working conditions. Operationally, the facility has a greater storage capacity, more loading/unloading ramps and docks and the flexibility to better manage seasonal peaks in demand.

The Supply Chain Director of Conforama, François-Xavier Forestier is pleased with the move, “We are confident that the cross-docking operation in Poland will efficiently process products from multiple suppliers, consolidating them into loads for our individual outlets. The advantages of effective inventory management through GEODIS’ IT capabilities will also be beneficial to us.”

“We would like to thank our client Conforama for the trust he has placed in us, which has resulted in the signing of a new long-term contract,” says Olivier Royer GEODIS Road Transport CEO. “The implementation of this solution for Conforama has been possible thanks to the collaboration between the developer MountPark and GEODIS teams at Pietrzykowice whose work is proving once again our commitment and capacity to deliver the most appropriate solution in order to help our customers to grow their activities.”

Through its subsidiary Sealogis, GEODIS becomes shipping agent for France for the shipping company Zéphyr & Borée

GEODIS has signed a partnership agreement with Zéphyr & Borée, a French start-up pioneer in low-carbon maritime transport specializing in the design of sail-powered cargo ships. This technological innovation will contribute to the reduction of emissions in the maritime transport of goods.

Zéphyr & Borée has chosen Sealogis, a subsidiary of Geodis, as shipping agent for France. As an agent, Sealogis will be responsible for presenting, promoting and marketing the services of Zéphyr & Borée to its clientele of shippers and forwarders. To provide a fully coherent service, Sealogis will ensure that low-carbon land-based solutions are proposed whenever possible for all pre-carriage and post-carriage transportation associated with the Zéphyr & Borée maritime service.

The shipping company, based in Lorient in Brittany, specializes in fitting out low-emission ships. A pioneer in its field, the company designs merchant ships equipped with sails, using alternative fuels to fossil fuels.

Under an agreement with the AUTF (the French freight transport users association), Zéphyr & Borée will launch a container shipping service operating transatlantic routes, starting in 2025. The wind-powered vessels will operate a weekly service between Le Havre, Antwerp and the East Coast of the United States, along with an equivalent service sailing from Mediterranean ports.

This technological innovation will make it possible to halve CO2 emissions while guaranteeing a transit time competitive with that of traditional cargo ships.

Eric Martin Neuville, Executive Vice President, Global Freight Forwarding at Geodis, said: “This commitment to Zéphyr & Borée clearly demonstrates Geodis’s desire to support the decarbonization of maritime transport for the sake of the climate. Transporting freight via wind-powered cargo ships is an innovative project that Geodis will propose to its customers to support them in their sustainable performance.”

Amaury Bolvin, Managing Director of Zéphyr & Borée, commented: “Achieving the necessary energy transition in maritime transport will require the use of wind propulsion, as in the past. The launch of this transatlantic sailing line will demonstrate this and we believe that it will be the start of a major transition. We are pleased to be working on this project with Sealogis and Geodis, who have been partners of Zephyr & Borée from the outset.”

Just twelve-months after establishing an operational footprint adjacent to the strategic Swedish port, GEODIS’ contract logistics line of business is expanding its capacity with a second warehouse next door to its existing 16,000 sqm facility.  With all the benefits the location just 12 km west of central Gothenburg can offer, including access to the E6 and E20 highways and the port itself, additionally the extension has a railhead within the property, clearance heights of twelve meters and thirty-five loading docks. The second warehouse will be fully operational as of March 2023.

In introducing the options for customers that the development brings, Managing Director of GEODIS in Scandinavia, Magnus Tornerhjelm said, “Our role in serving our customers contract logistics demands involves a variety of multimodal means of product supply and distribution to ultimate destinations.  Our choice of location and warehouse facilities has been influenced by these dynamics and we are well-placed to access variable transport options.”

GEODIS’ Arendal site will feature cross-dock unloading and loading activities backed by full contract logistics services of inventory control via WMS, re-packaging and distribution throughout the Nordic region.  The two warehouses will operate in harmony and access to the rail mode will be utilized fully whenever it is appropriate.
