SAL gets a new sister – SAL Engineering

SAL Engineering becomes a sister company to SAL Heavy Lift GmbH, and is utilizing from the know-how, and practical experience that has been obtained over the past 35 years creating engineering solutions for the worldwide recognized project carrier.

There is a new kid on the block, yet it builds on a foundation that is very well established with over 35 years of operation. A new chapter has begun within heavy lift & marine engineering. SAL Engineering GmbH is opening as an independent engineering house, offering highly specialized technical engineering, consultancy and site support services.

SAL Engineering does therefore not set off as an industry newcomer. With thousands of realized projects for SAL Heavy Lift, the company is already having solid experience to present from its first day of operation.

Karsten Behrens, General Manager SAL Engineering states: “I am very happy about bringing SAL Engineering to market. For many years our team has been developing heavy lift solutions to customers world-wide – but always in combination with cargo bookings on company tonnage. Now we can also deliver it as an independent service – and with a wider scope, not only to our industry, but to multiple industries.”

SAL Engineering will offer services within three business fields: Engineering, Consultancy and Site Support & Surveys. Amongst these fields, services such as structural designs and hydrodynamic calculations, design reviews and FEED studies as well as cargo operations and condition surveys can be mentioned as a few within the palette of competences.

Axel Urban, General Manager SAL Engineering explains: “We have some of the best minds in our industry. Our team consists of naval architects, master mariners, structural and welding engineers and hydrodynamic experts, that in combination can develop fully customized solutions within all disciplines of marine engineering and heavy lift transportation. Our solutions are rooted in practical experience – resulting in an efficient and cost-effective result. We know how to put a concept into realization.“

SAL Engineering can support a wide range of industries enabling many to benefit from the comprehensive service levels. It is recognized that technical pain points may exist in a broader range of businesses, even outside the heavy lift and marine construction sector. And here SAL Engineering seek to offer its services as well.

Heiko Felderhoff, Managing Director SAL Engineering adds: “The bandwidth of businesses that can benefit from our services are actually quite broad – we can supply technical designs and execution models to EPC houses, support other shipowners, but also provide vital services to financial institutions and public authorities just to mention a few. By providing comprehensive optimization solutions to industries that have stake but not necessarily direct know how, SAL Engineering may prove to become an important business partner. And as we offer services both as packages or as customized solutions there is an effortless way forward for anyone seeking our services.”

The engineering support to SAL Heavy Lift will remain unchanged. Customers can still expect the same level of technical solutions which has always characterized the service from SAL.

Harren & Partner to acquire SAL Heavy Lift

Bremen-based shipping company Harren & Partner and “K” Line, Tokyo, have reached an agreement for Harren & Partner to acquire German carrier SAL Heavy Lift on 27 July 2017. SAL will become the new dominant player in the super heavy lift segment (900 t to 2,000 t crane capacity).

SAL Heavy Lift, founded in 1980 in the “Altes Land” area near Hamburg, is one of the world’s leading carriers spe-cialised in the sea transport of heavy lift and project cargo. Its offshore subsidiary, SAL Offshore, develops and sup-plies installation solutions for the oil & gas and renewables sectors. Part of the “K” Line Group since 2011, SAL has access to a highly flexible fleet of 15 heavy lift vessels and a worldwide network with offices and agencies in 25 countries.

“I am very proud and pleased that we have reached the agreement with “K” Line. This is another milestone in Harren & Partner’s history. SAL is an eminently respectable company with experienced employees and long-term customer relationships which stands for innovation, quality and technical expertise,” says Dr. Martin Harren, Man-aging Director of Harren & Partner. “We believe that this acquisition will ensure that both SAL and Harren & Part-ner are very well-positioned for the future. In becoming the new dominant player in the super heavy lift market, we believe this will add strength to SAL and bring with it some much needed pricing discipline.”

Toshio Yamazaki, CEO of SAL, is looking forward to the new owner and comments on the deal: “We are glad to join Harren & Partner. It’s a family-owned company that wants to expand its activities in the heavy lift segment. By join-ing forces, both Harren & Partner and SAL will strengthen their product suites. Customers will benefit from more choices and better solutions.”

With SAL and Combi Lift, two heavy lift companies now belong to Harren & Partner. “We are aiming for a light-touch integration with Harren & Partner. SAL, with its excellent reputation, will continue to provide its well-known services,” emphasises Peter Harren, Founder and Managing Director of Harren & Partner. SAL Heavy Lift will still operate as a separate brand with its headquarters in Hamburg. “There won’t be any changes for SAL’s clients. Also, the fleet of 15 heavy lift vessels will remain with SAL.”

Together, Harren & Partner and SAL have a fleet of 26 heavy lift vessels: from multipurpose vessels (300 t crane capacity) and dock ships, to offshore construction vessels with DP2 and a combined crane capacity of up to 2,000 t.

SAL will also manage the CL 900/Type 116 vessels as well as Combi Dock I and III in the future. This will greatly en-hance the company’s scope of action: From now on, modern world class vessels with Flo/Flo and Ro/Ro capability for the premium project segment will be part of the fleet. Furthermore SAL will have the largest super heavy lift fleet in the industry (twelve +900 t vessels). Justin Archard, Corporate Commercial Director of SAL, says: “This ex-tends our scope of action to develop customised solutions that meet the toughest individual demands. This new format will help us develop even higher standards in maritime transport logistics and project engineering. The new SAL – more of everything.”

Combi Lift will update its market approach in line with the SAL acquisition. Heiko Felderhoff, CEO of Combi Lift, ex-plains: “We at Combi Lift are also very glad that the acquisition was made possible. Combi Lift will increasingly fo-cus on demanding logistics challenges beyond the day-to-day business – just like the Gazprom Amur GPP Project in Russia – as well as special offshore, decommissioning and salvage projects. SAL and Combi Lift will complement each other in their abilities and share their know-how and expertise.”

With its vessel MV “Trina” SAL has just finalized the Veja Mate Offshore Wind Farm project, transporting in total 68 transition pieces in eleven consecutive voyages from Aalborg to Eemshaven.

With the award of the Walney contract, SAL directly benefits from its flawless performance at the Veja Mate Offshore Project. At this recently finished project SAL’s MV “Trina” was engaged from early summer 2016. In eleven consecutive voyages she transported not only 67 transition pieces with an individual weight of 365 tons, measuring 22m x 6m in diameter, but also 67 Air Tight Platforms and 67 Anode Cages. Pieter Poelsma, Manager Transport and Logistics, from OWF (Offshore Wind), stated: ”The commitment of SAL Heavy Lift GmbH to HSE, Quality, workmanship, and eagerness to complete the project correctly and within the allotted schedule is greatly appreciated. The project was a great success. Holger Krenz, SAL’s Head of Project Management said: “The winning relationship with our client OWF ensured high efficiency during the project preparation phase and the later operations. As a consequence, the project could be finalized in time and within the quality requirements from OWF. We aim for the same within the Walney project”.

A ‘Lone’ at the Top of the Speed Charts: SAL Vessel Breaks a Record

MV Lone SAL Heavy Lift vessel, MV Lone has entered the record books by achieving a 20 day transit between Batum in Indonesia and the Firth of Forth in Scotland. The 12,500DWT specialised heavy-lift ship completed the 8,733 nautical mile voyage at an average speed of 19.3 knots on the 16th May.

Hamburg, 26 July 2016

For SAL Heavy Lift, the Hamburg-based ship owner and operator, crafting well engineered transport solutions for cargoes that are too heavy, out-of-gauge or of such awkward dimensions that conventional forms of shipping are impossible, is its usual speciality. But sometimes it’s out and out speed that gets the job done.

An average speed of 19.3 knots, 22.2 mph or 35.7 kph in land speed terms, sustained over such a long distance is a considerable achievement and for a specially equipped vessel like MV Lone, it’s a record. The vessel, built in 2011 at J J Sietas’ yard in Hamburg, is 12,500DWT has an LOA of 160 metres and a beam 28 metres*.

In the case of this voyage, the cargo, a Submerged Turret Production (STP) buoy weighing eleven hundred tons, had a tight delivery schedule of three weeks. It was destined for an off-shore location some miles from the East Coast of Scotland and was required on site so as not to delay the start of a drilling project.

SAL made available MV Lone, one of the largest vessels in its fleet of fourteen multi-purpose heavy-lift units, which are deployed on both regular semi-liner services around the world and have availability to service one-off projects. The in-house engineering team were engaged to design the logistical side of the operation but it was left to the MV Lone and her crew to plot a safe course and to attain the maximum speed across the Indian Ocean, through the Suez Canal to North Europe via the Mediterranean.

Commenting on the record-breaking run, Matthias Meyer, SAL’s Project Manager said, “A journey of nearly nine thousand nautical miles is not quite halfway around the world but it is not far short. To maintain this sort of average speed through all weathers is an impressive feat of seamanship and we are proud of the officers and crew of Lone for making this possible.”

Although SAL’s fleet of vessels have unrivalled speed and carrying capacity that rank among the largest of their type, it is the company’s ability to meet the requirements of the most challenging and complex of cargo moves that maintains its long-standing reputation for reliability and on-time delivery.
