Philippe Gilbert appointed Executive Vice President of Geodis Wilson

Amsterdam, Paris 24th February 2010

Philippe Gilbert has been appointed Executive Vice President of Geodis Wilson. Peter Nevhagen who spearheaded the division together with Philippe Gilbert during the transition period will remain a member of the Board as appointed Chief Operating Officer of Geodis Wilson. Geodis’ freight management division is hence from now on under one single leadership.

Jean-Louis Demeulenaere, Deputy CEO of Geodis Group commented: “I am delighted that both, Philippe and Peter accepted their new responsibilities. During the recent phase following the merger of the networks, a co-headed management system was entirely legitimate. Now, in the context of strong future growth ambitions of Geodis Wilson and Geodis Group it is necessary to revert to a classical management structure. I am convinced this evolution in leadership will boost the strategic development of the division.”

Philippe Gilbert said: “Geodis Wilson needs to be able to compete in all major trades and selected vertical markets. Right now we are just outside of the Top 10 worldwide freight forwarders. And we are ready for the jump. Our growth strategy will move us forward.” Peter Nevhagen, who also previously functioned as the Chief Marketing Officer of Geodis Wilson and whose main new focus will be on further improvements of service quality, operational performance and efficiency added: “The change from commercial to operational leadership is an exciting and challenging opportunity to further support and drive the transformation of Geodis Wilson. To me this a logical next step within the development of our company.”

Concomitantly with these changes, Kim Pedersen has been appointed as Chief Marketing Officer and member of the Geodis Wilson Board. Kim Pedersen: “After a few years of integration, our division is conducting a dynamic growth strategy in the coming years – and with a high sense of urgency, we will focus on increasing our market share through innovative integrated solutions”.

Philippe Gilbert, Executive Vice President Geodis Wilson

Before joining Geodis Wilson, Philippe Gilbert worked for Saga, Circle and EGL as Chief Operating Officer for Latin America and EMEA. He joined Geodis in September 2005 when he was appointed Senior Vice President for Geodis Overseas and Groupage. In 2007 he became Chief Operating Officer of Geodis Wilson. In addition to this role he was appointed Executive Vice President in 2008, together with Peter Nevhagen, before Philippe took the single leadership of the division in 2010. Today he is the Executive Vice President and Chairman of the Geodis Wilson Freight Board.

Peter Nevhagen, Chief Operating Officer Geodis Wilson

Peter Nevhagen joined Wilson in 2002, as Managing Director of the Swedish subsidiary. In 2005 he was nominated to the position as Vice President of the Nordic & Baltic region, and following Geodis’ acquisition of Wilson in 2007 he became Chief Marketing Officer of the newly formed Geodis Wilson division. In 2008, he was appointed Executive Vice President of the division before he changed from his commercial role into operational leadership in 2010, as being Chief Operations Officer.

Kim Pedersen, Chief Marketing Officer Geodis Wilson

Kim Pedersen joined Wilson in 1994 and after being Managing Director of the Danish subsidiary, he carried the position of Vice President Nordic and Baltic region between 2007 and 2009. From 2009 and up to this nomination of CMO, Kim Pedersen acted as Vice President Global Sales / Deputy CMO.

Geodis Wilson expansion bucks trend in Dubai

Dubai, 25th March 2010

In the first of three service developments this year in the United Arab Emirates, global forwarder and logistics services provider Geodis Wilson has opened a new airfreight office in Dubai to support increasing demand for this service mode as well as its advancing sea-air product.

Based in Dubai’s busy Cargo Village, the new office will employ 22 people under the direction of Geodis Wilson UAE LLC Managing Director Sascha Geiken, allowing a previous combined office and warehouse, situated close by, to focus entirely on warehousing accommodation.

“Our pace of growth meant that we no longer had any spare capacity in the old office/warehouse, and as our business is increasing, particularly with Geodis Wilson’s sea-air product, further warehousing space became essential in order to meet our customers’ requirements,” explained Mr Geiken.

The new facility will handle freight from up to ten inbound flights daily – mainly from Europe and the Far East – as well as sea-air cargo originating as ocean freight from the Geodis Wilson network in the Far East, which is switched from the nearby Jebel Ali port to air cargo on Dubai flights bound for European destinations. The new office will also be involved in customs clearance, general forwarding, supply chain management, warehousing and customs clearance activities.

Geodis Wilson, which is ranked among Dubai’s top ten forwarders, employs a total of 70 people in the Emirate and has its regional headquarters at nearby Jebel Ali, where ocean freight activities are also carried out.

The company is bucking the trend as many competitors in Dubai are forced to reduce their organisations due to the economic situation. “We pride ourselves in having a personalised service offering, which our customers appreciate, and it is this focus on relationships that has led to our success, supported of course, by the global Geodis Wilson network,” added Mr Geiken. “In fact, we are in the unlikely, but enviable situation of having to recruit staff.”

Early indications suggest that Geodis Wilson’s year-on-year activity in Dubai is currently growing at more than 10 per cent across all modes. There is particular strength in the sea-air business, which allows shippers to save on the cost of a total airfreight movement from the Far East to Europe, while offering substantial transit time savings over an end-to-end ocean freight movement. Sea-air demand is particularly strong from the textile and hi-tech sectors.

The second significant milestone for Geodis Wilson in the UAE will be the opening of an Abu Dhabi office during the second quarter. Within this region, the company also has offices in Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Later this year, a third landmark event will be the opening of a new regional headquarters in Jebel Ali.

Geodis Wilson managed record-breaking Air Freight move

Copenhagen, 11th June 2010

Performed by the crew of a giant Antonov AN-225, the biggest aircraft in the world, Geodis Wilson managed the transportation of two brand new wind turbine blades of its customer LM Wind Power. With a length of 42.1 metres the blades are the longest cargo pieces that were ever flown by an aircraft.

Geodis Wilson is one of the logistics providers of LM Wind Power, a market leader in the international wind power industry, supplying rotor solutions to numerous wind turbine manufacturers in all main markets worldwide. The two transported prototype blades were produced for a new type of wind turbine that extends the possibility of efficient generation of clean energy.

“Our new GloBlades® are a fantastic step forward, conceived and developed by a global team of designers based in Denmark and Holland. The new blade type will help the wind farm developers take wind energy to new heights. These blades ensure reliable, clean electricity in lower wind areas for turbines at 1.5-1.7 MW,” Frank V. Nielsen, Chief Technology Officer explains.

Geodis Wilson’s Industrial Projects division has built up a specialist team to handle wind energy logistics. This record-breaking transportation involved a full turn-key operation including inland transportation from the LM Wind Power manufacturing plant in Tianjin to Tianjin Airport, China, intricate loading onto the world’s largest freight aircraft AN-225, customs clearance, supervision of unloading and final delivery from the Skrydstrup Vojens Danish Military Airport (SKS), the only Danish airport capable of handling this large move.

“Our activities in the wind energy sector are well known in the market, but the move of these prototype blades of LM Wind Power allowed us to conquer a new level of complexity,” explained Global Manager Wind Energy Projects, Henrik Funk. Philippe Somers, Senior Vice President of Geodis Wilson Industrial Pojects adds: “The fact that we have an established network presence in both China and Denmark, along with a dedicated air charter division, on-site expertise and technical support in this sector, certainly helped us to successfully manage this move for and together with LM Wind Power and Antonov Airlines.”

About LM Wind Power

LM Wind Power produces blades on or close to major wind markets to ensure local delivery of high quality, competitive blades. The GloBlades® will be manufactured first in the Chinese market due to firm contracts with customers in this high growth market. During the coming months prototypes will be supplied to a number of Western and Chinese customers including companies like Envision and Goldwind. The first wind turbine powered by GloBlades® will be erected in July this year. To ensure their durability, new LM Wind Power blades are tested in prototype form in full scale test facilities in Denmark. The two GloBlades® arriving from China have transparent gelcoat instead of the usual white surface. This enables our engineers to see how the materials perform when put through the harsh tests.

The LM Wind Power Group comprises LM Wind Power Blades (former LM Glasfiber), LM Wind Power Service and Logistics (a newly established operation) and Svendborg Brakes, acquired in 2009. More information: www.lmwindpower.com

Market Clarity and Simplicity is approach from Geodis Wilson’s new EMEA Regional Vice President

Paris, Amsterdam, 13th July 2010

Freight Management specialist Geodis Wilson has named Alain Chimene as Regional Vice-President Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) – a newly-formed region poised to offer cohesive solutions to customers across a diverse range of countries.

EMEA, along with the Asia-Pacific and Americas Regions, delivers a unified Geodis Wilson offering globally to markets as they emerge from a trade downturn and seek user-friendly and effective freight management solutions.

Alain Chimene, age 50 and based in Paris, joined Geodis Wilson in 2001. For the past seven years has been based in Hong Kong, becoming Regional Vice-President of the Asian region in 2007, and gaining a reputation for building a strong business organisation for Geodis Wilson – a success that he is keen to extend to the new EMEA region.

Having stated his career in the freight services industry with Africa specialist Transcap International some 25 years ago, followed by nine years’ experience with forwarder Ziegler, Alain Chimene now oversees Geodis Wilson’s largest region. EMEA is accounting for 60 percent of the company’s turnover and 2,600 people – almost half its total staff.  ”Although many European markets are considered mature, there remains ample growth potential for the Geodis Wilson global network, through internal and external growth. Alain’s key priority will be development of the business at a rate that outpaces market growth while balancing that with cost-conscious improvements in productivity”.

In rising to the challenge Alain himself said, “This is what I call the efficiency of developments combined with the development of efficiencies. This will be achieved through building team spirit at every level. There are many operational advantages in this region, not least the skills of its people and a well-balanced airfreight and sea freight global activity. I believe that these attributes can be honed to provide our customers with real advantages through our EMEA organisation which will enable us to respond in a speedy and flexible way, particularly in terms of requests for quotations and tenders.”

Pre-registered visitors to Multimodal 2010 include: Sainsbury’s, United Biscuits UK, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford Motor Company, Kodak, Cadbury, Nestlé,  Marks & Spencer, Dyson, Mothercare, Pepsico and Shell, to name but a few.

With the whole show now occupying 17,500 sq metres of floor space at Birmingham’s NEC, this is promising to be the largest Multimodal of all.

Exhibitors range from ports, shipping lines, rail operators, airlines, road hauliers, and logistics providers through to equipment suppliers, technical and IT support providers, academic institutions, trade associations and government bodies. Visitors are drawn from the ranks of major shippers, retailers and industry.

One of the main attractions of the event is the comprehensive programme of seminars and industry briefings running on each of the three days of the event and organised by the Shipper’s Voice and the Trade Extension (to see full programme click here ), which are designed to give shippers and transport operators the opportunity to exchange views and to learn from some of the leading experts in the industry.

“Multimodal 2011 will be our fourth event and each year we have built on the success of the previous one.” said Event Director, Robert Jervis, “We have an impressive number of new exhibitors this year taking us to a total of nearly 200, and a distinguished range of speakers are lined up to talk at the event. But it is the growth of Multimodal as the accepted prime location for industry professionals to meet of which I am most proud. It is now an essential date for their diaries. I am confident of Multimodal 2011 success for all who visit or exhibit”.

Multimodal at the NEC from 5-7 April 2011, and visitor registration is free.

About Multimodal:

Taking place from 5th to 7th April 2011 at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Multimodal aims to attract a large group of exhibitors and visitors from across the whole spectrum of freight transport, logistics and supply chain service providers than it ever has before.

Multimodal 2011 is the only UK event that brings together all sectors of freight transport under a single roof.  The Seminars and Briefings which are an integral part of the event, have scheduled an enlightening and thought-provoking range of topics, tackled in an interactive fashion by panels of experts or as briefings presented by representatives from centres of excellence. Topics range from insight into the media, customs, container shipping trends, container swaps, security, reducing empty loads and ports’ role in adding value, to e-sourcing, collaborative logistics, supply chain optimisation, key performance indices (KPIs) and logistics data analytics.
