Hof/Kempten, 27 January, 2020 – Logistics provider Dachser is stepping up its contract logistics activities in the Upper Franconia region of Germany and moving into a new warehouse in the town of Hof. The warehouse will provide space for around 39,000 pallets and have 47 docking bays. Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2020. 

The expansion also includes offices and communal areas covering a total area of 900 square meters. “Our new multi-user warehouse next to the existing logistics center will offer space for us to provide contract logistics services for a medium-sized customer from the DIY and gardening sector for example,” says Klaus Neubing, General Manager of the Hof logistics center, about the expansion of business at the location. The contract logistics services that Dachser offers in Hof combine transport solutions and warehousing with comprehensive value-added services such as picking and packaging. Following the expansion, Dachser will employ some 500 people in the town. In addition, around 300 people work regularly for Dachser through the independent transport companies or, for example, as seasonal workers.

Pan-European project developer and logistics specialist Verdion carries oit the construction work, and Dachser will be able to move into the building in fall 2020. “This expansion marks the next important step in our work with one of our major DIY customers in the region,” says Alexander Tonn, Managing Director European Logistics Germany, who is responsible for Dachser’s industrial goods business in Germany. “Together, we’re putting in place a sustainable, growth-oriented logistics concept in Hof.”

From a geographic perspective, Hof’s central location in Europe is perfect for the logistics center, since all the relevant European destinations and economic centers are within easy reach. Dachser’s logistics center in Nuremberg connects the Hof branch to the company’s worldwide air and sea freight network.

30 years in Upper Franconia

Dachser has been operating in Germany’s Upper Franconia region for over 30 years. Today’s logistics center, located on the outskirts of Hof since 2008, offers a 13,800-square-meter transit terminal and 11,800 square meters of warehouse space with 35,000 high-bay pallet spaces. This capacity has made the logistics provider a long-standing warehousing and transport partner in the region for customers from the industrial goods and food sectors.

In their joint grassroots projects, it is patience, perseverance, and establishing local and cultural roots that prove to be the recipe for success

Kempten, November 28, 2019. Dachser and the international children’s aid organization terre des hommes are expanding their long-standing partnership and commitment to social responsibility in the regions of South Asia, Southern Africa, and Latin America.

Based on the idea of “helping people to help themselves,” the grassroots projects focus on the fight against human rights violations—in particular all forms of violence against children and women—as well as on commitment to providing a healthy, clean environment, and on the education of young people—especially girls and young women—and supporting them on their way to finding gainful employment. Given that developing and emerging countries play a critical role in the fight against climate change, the partnership supports projects that center on climate protection and provision of the appropriate infrastructure. For each of the three project regions—South Asia, Southern Africa, and Latin America—Dachser is providing annual funding to the tune of EUR 200,000 for the next five years.

“For the development partnership to make a real difference, you need staying power and to make sure social responsibility is firmly rooted in the local communities,” says Bernhard Simon, CEO of Dachser. “That way, the issues that really need attention are the ones that get addressed. terre des hommes and its local partners ensure that youth and women’s groups have the opportunity to articulate their concerns and, with our support, take action to support the ongoing social and ecological development of their local community.”  

New projects in India and Nepal

Dachser and terre des hommes have been working together in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh since 2005, where they have achieved a great deal so far: almost 32,000 children have now been informed about their rights to live a life free of violence, child labor, and sexual exploitation. More than 18,000 children have been given support in preparation for regular school attendance, and 5,400 young people, mainly girls, have learned simple handicraft skills such as tailoring, sewing, or weaving in order to earn their own money and support their families financially. Some 5,000 young people got involved in street theater or other activities to raise awareness of social problems, such as alcoholism or violence against children and women, among their communities. And more than 4,000 young people have taken part in environmental protection workshops and planted almost 50,000 trees as part of reforestation campaigns.

Dachser and terre des hommes will continue to support two districts of Uttar Pradesh and two urban slums in New Delhi, and will be adding the following regions to their outreach projects for the 2020–2025 period:

• In the northern Indian state of Bihar, one in three people lives below the poverty line, i.e., without access to clean drinking water, sanitation, housing, education, or work. Violence, particularly against women and girls, is widespread: trafficking and abduction of girls for forced marriages are an everyday occurrence. In the districts of Katihar and Munger, where the problem is especially acute, Dachser will support two local organizations over the next five years to provide girls there with better protection.
• On the western edge of Nepal, the Bajura district is suffering increasingly from drought and food shortages; the people scrape by the best they can on subsistence agriculture. Access to education and career opportunities are virtually non-existent, often forcing young people to migrate to India to find work in the cities there. In a project set to run through 2025, Dachser will support a local organization in improving the education and living conditions of 600 families in the region.

The company will also continue with and expand its existing projects with terre des hommes in Southern Africa and Latin America.

Expanding the transit terminal, creating 25 new jobs.

Kempten/Öhringen, November 19, 2019 – Construction work has begun to expand Dachser’s Öhringen branch. By summer 2020, the existing transit terminal will be 3,500 square meters larger. A new story will also be added to the office building, increasing its floor space by 600 square meters. Dachser is investing some EUR 9.5 million in the project.

Dachser’s Öhringen branch has been part of the Dachser European network since 2012, and is ideally located on Germany’s A6 motorway, near the Weinsberg junction at Heilbronn. The branch underwent its first major expansion in 2015 with the addition of a warehouse to the existing transit terminal; the new facility offered contract logistics customers roughly 22,000 pallet spaces across more than 15,000 square meters. Now, about four years later, it’s time for the next expansion. Marc-Oliver Bohlender, Branch Manager in Öhringen, explains: “Putting that warehouse into operation back then represented a major step forward. In the years that followed, our tonnage has grown by just under 10 percent annually, so it’s high time to expand our capacity once again.”

The transit terminal, which currently occupies 5,300 square meters, will gain another 3,500 square meters. It will also grow from 38 gates to a total of 87. At the same time, a new story will be added to the accompanying office building, increasing its floor space by some 600 square meters. Dachser Öhringen currently has about 230 employees who transport industrial goods all across Europe, processing approximately 57,400 shipments per month for a total of some 302,100 metric tons each year. The expansion of the Öhringen branch will create a total of 25 new jobs.

Freiburg/Kempten, October 21, 2019 –This weekend, logistics provider Dachser held a ceremony to mark the opening of its new logistics center on the Breisgau industrial park in Freiburg, Germany. Covering a total area of 6,117 square meters, the new facility houses a transit terminal with 82 docking bays as well as a two-story office building. The company invested around EUR 22 million in the location, where it is also creating 30 new jobs.

Construction work on the approximately 65,000-square-meter plot of land on the Breisgau industrial park began in summer 2018. Now, a year later, Dachser can commence operations at the new logistics center. Dachser opened its first Freiburg branch in 1984. It was clear from the outset that, due to its proximity to several national borders, the city was the ideal location for a logistics hub to handle groupage transports to Switzerland, France, and southwestern Germany. The existing branch in Freiburg-Hochdorf grew steadily and has now reached the limit of its capacity. Sited to the southwest of Freiburg, the new logistics center offers ideal operating conditions as well as opportunities for expansion in the future.

The opening ceremony took place this weekend. Around hundreds guests accepted the invitation to attend the event in the Breisgau business park. “Located directly on the A5 highway, the new facility has excellent connections to three countries: Germany, France, and Switzerland. For Dachser, the new facility’s location, technical infrastructure, human resources, capacity, and expansion potential together form an important building block for growth in Europe and for further strengthening the network,” said Michael Schilling, COO Road Logistics at Dachser, in his speech on the outstanding strategic role that Freiburg plays for Dachser. 

As things stand, the 160 Dachser employees in Freiburg handle 260,000 metric tons of industrial goods a year—and the volume is increasing. “When it comes to our continued growth in Freiburg, one thing is clear: good logistics needs good employees. That’s why, in addition to the 30 newly created roles, I’m delighted that nine new apprentices will be joining us as our new logistics center begins operations,” says Michael Gaudlitz, General Manager Dachser Logistics Centre Freiburg. The apprentices will be embarking on their training to become warehouse specialists, professional drivers, and forwarding and logistics specialists, while some will be completing the practical element of a dual-study program at Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) in Lörrach. “By deciding to pursue an apprenticeship in logistics, they’ve chosen an occupation with future prospects,” Gaudlitz says. Dachser is strongly committed to nurturing young talent and usually hires those who successfully complete their training at the company.

DACHSER UK’s key investment in the northwest of England is fully operational. After announcing the development of a new logistics centre at the beginning of the year, the logistics service provider, part of the international Dachser group, has moved rapidly to complete the newly built 5,175 square metre hub. Rochdale has been Dachser’s home in the region since 2010, the new unit replaces their existing distribution facility. 

The development of the 3.7 hectare (9.2 acre) site represents a EUR 16 million (GBP 14.4 million) investment by the company and is evidence of Dachser’s commitment to the UK market. In particular, it strengthens the company’s presence in the northern UK region and will further improve its transport and distribution services in one of British industry’s heartlands.

“We have an optimistic view on the future of both import and export trade with the rest of Europe and beyond,” commented Mark Rollinson, Managing Director, Dachser UK. “Since the company’s initial expansion into the area in 2010, our business has grown fivefold, necessitating the warehouse expansion to satisfy the demands of our customers’ global integrated supply chains.  We have also experienced a sustained increase in UK exports delivered through Dachser’s extensive European distribution network.”

The location is optimally situated from a logistics viewpoint, adjacent to the Trans-Pennine motorway, which is an important artery of the UK’s ‘Northern Powerhouse’. The new facility has 49 dock loading doors and an additional four level access doors, and the build is nearly 7,000 square metres, including office space.

“The Rochdale Logistics Centre is connected to the global Dachser network with daily direct freight services,” explains Gary Atkinson, Branch Manager at Rochdale. “With this new construction, our location in the North of England is evolving into an important hub within Dachser’s European network. Ensuring that the new facility remained within Rochdale was an important consideration in the interests of the company’s workforce,” he emphasised.
