Dachser enlarges branch in Öhringen

Expanding the transit terminal, creating 25 new jobs.

Kempten/Öhringen, November 19, 2019 – Construction work has begun to expand Dachser’s Öhringen branch. By summer 2020, the existing transit terminal will be 3,500 square meters larger. A new story will also be added to the office building, increasing its floor space by 600 square meters. Dachser is investing some EUR 9.5 million in the project.

Dachser’s Öhringen branch has been part of the Dachser European network since 2012, and is ideally located on Germany’s A6 motorway, near the Weinsberg junction at Heilbronn. The branch underwent its first major expansion in 2015 with the addition of a warehouse to the existing transit terminal; the new facility offered contract logistics customers roughly 22,000 pallet spaces across more than 15,000 square meters. Now, about four years later, it’s time for the next expansion. Marc-Oliver Bohlender, Branch Manager in Öhringen, explains: “Putting that warehouse into operation back then represented a major step forward. In the years that followed, our tonnage has grown by just under 10 percent annually, so it’s high time to expand our capacity once again.”

The transit terminal, which currently occupies 5,300 square meters, will gain another 3,500 square meters. It will also grow from 38 gates to a total of 87. At the same time, a new story will be added to the accompanying office building, increasing its floor space by some 600 square meters. Dachser Öhringen currently has about 230 employees who transport industrial goods all across Europe, processing approximately 57,400 shipments per month for a total of some 302,100 metric tons each year. The expansion of the Öhringen branch will create a total of 25 new jobs.

Dachser opens new logistics center in Freiburg – Thirty new jobs created at the Breisgau industrial park

Freiburg/Kempten, October 21, 2019 –This weekend, logistics provider Dachser held a ceremony to mark the opening of its new logistics center on the Breisgau industrial park in Freiburg, Germany. Covering a total area of 6,117 square meters, the new facility houses a transit terminal with 82 docking bays as well as a two-story office building. The company invested around EUR 22 million in the location, where it is also creating 30 new jobs.

Construction work on the approximately 65,000-square-meter plot of land on the Breisgau industrial park began in summer 2018. Now, a year later, Dachser can commence operations at the new logistics center. Dachser opened its first Freiburg branch in 1984. It was clear from the outset that, due to its proximity to several national borders, the city was the ideal location for a logistics hub to handle groupage transports to Switzerland, France, and southwestern Germany. The existing branch in Freiburg-Hochdorf grew steadily and has now reached the limit of its capacity. Sited to the southwest of Freiburg, the new logistics center offers ideal operating conditions as well as opportunities for expansion in the future.

The opening ceremony took place this weekend. Around hundreds guests accepted the invitation to attend the event in the Breisgau business park. “Located directly on the A5 highway, the new facility has excellent connections to three countries: Germany, France, and Switzerland. For Dachser, the new facility’s location, technical infrastructure, human resources, capacity, and expansion potential together form an important building block for growth in Europe and for further strengthening the network,” said Michael Schilling, COO Road Logistics at Dachser, in his speech on the outstanding strategic role that Freiburg plays for Dachser.

As things stand, the 160 Dachser employees in Freiburg handle 260,000 metric tons of industrial goods a year—and the volume is increasing. “When it comes to our continued growth in Freiburg, one thing is clear: good logistics needs good employees. That’s why, in addition to the 30 newly created roles, I’m delighted that nine new apprentices will be joining us as our new logistics center begins operations,” says Michael Gaudlitz, General Manager Dachser Logistics Centre Freiburg. The apprentices will be embarking on their training to become warehouse specialists, professional drivers, and forwarding and logistics specialists, while some will be completing the practical element of a dual-study program at Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) in Lörrach. “By deciding to pursue an apprenticeship in logistics, they’ve chosen an occupation with future prospects,” Gaudlitz says. Dachser is strongly committed to nurturing young talent and usually hires those who successfully complete their training at the company.

Dachser’s new logistics centre in the North of England is now operational

DACHSER UK’s key investment in the northwest of England is fully operational. After announcing the development of a new logistics centre at the beginning of the year, the logistics service provider, part of the international Dachser group, has moved rapidly to complete the newly built 5,175 square metre hub. Rochdale has been Dachser’s home in the region since 2010, the new unit replaces their existing distribution facility.

The development of the 3.7 hectare (9.2 acre) site represents a EUR 16 million (GBP 14.4 million) investment by the company and is evidence of Dachser’s commitment to the UK market. In particular, it strengthens the company’s presence in the northern UK region and will further improve its transport and distribution services in one of British industry’s heartlands.

“We have an optimistic view on the future of both import and export trade with the rest of Europe and beyond,” commented Mark Rollinson, Managing Director, Dachser UK. “Since the company’s initial expansion into the area in 2010, our business has grown fivefold, necessitating the warehouse expansion to satisfy the demands of our customers’ global integrated supply chains.  We have also experienced a sustained increase in UK exports delivered through Dachser’s extensive European distribution network.”

The location is optimally situated from a logistics viewpoint, adjacent to the Trans-Pennine motorway, which is an important artery of the UK’s ‘Northern Powerhouse’. The new facility has 49 dock loading doors and an additional four level access doors, and the build is nearly 7,000 square metres, including office space.

“The Rochdale Logistics Centre is connected to the global Dachser network with daily direct freight services,” explains Gary Atkinson, Branch Manager at Rochdale. “With this new construction, our location in the North of England is evolving into an important hub within Dachser’s European network. Ensuring that the new facility remained within Rochdale was an important consideration in the interests of the company’s workforce,” he emphasised.

Edoardo Podestá takes the helm of Dachser Air & Sea Logistics

Dachser appoints Edoardo Podestá as the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the Air & Sea Logistics business field

The long-standing Managing Director of the Asia Pacific region now heads Dachser’s global air and sea freight business.

Kempten, October 10, 2019. Dachser appoints Edoardo Podestá as the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the Air & Sea Logistics business field. Podestá replaces Jochen Müller in this position.

Dachser and the current COO Air & Sea Logistics, Jochen Müller, have mutually agreed not to extend his contract when it expires in 2020. Jochen Müller will stop working for Dachser with immediate effect.

In recent years, Jochen Müller was responsible for developing the air and sea freight business into a network company with operations worldwide, thereby putting in place the foundations for globally integrated supply chain solutions for our customers. It is thanks to his commitment that the structures to support the future expansion of the air and sea freight business could be further cemented. Dachser is grateful to Jochen Müller for all his hard work over the years and for the mutual trust upon which it was based, and wishes him every success in his personal and professional life in the future.

The job of heading up the global air and sea freight business is going to Edoardo Podestá, a seasoned Dachser manager. The 57-year-old Italian joined Dachser back in 2003 as part of the management team for the Züst Ambrosetti Far East Ltd. joint venture after Dachser had taken full control. In recognition of his successful expansion of the air and sea freight business in Asia, he was appointed Managing Director of the Asia Pacific business unit in 2014.

“Edoardo Podestá combines his success as an entrepreneur and strong leadership skills with his profound knowledge of the Asian and global air and sea freight markets,” says Bernhard Simon, Dachser CEO. “As COO Air & Sea Logistics, he will continue to expand our intercontinental network for air and sea freight and link it even more closely with our European overland transport network.”

DACHSER focuses on training

Professional qualifications are also becoming more important

Kempten, September 23, 2019.

At the start of the new training year, 740 apprentices and students in Germany chose to start training at Dachser. In addition to trainees in commercial areas, Dachser also recruited many junior logistics operatives.

Dachser CEO Bernhard Simon firmly believes that “to provide excellent logistics, you need excellent employees—and at all levels.” “A company’s success is always determined by people as they’re the ones who deliver the quality.” The family-owned company has always placed great value on training its staff. At the start of the new training year, more than 740 future logistics specialists started working at Dachser’s German branches. They’ll be training either in commercial or in operational areas of the business and 34 of them are completing a dual work-study program with Dachser. Currently, Dachser has a total of more than 1,860 trainees and students across Germany. The company aims to employ the junior logistics specialists on a permanent basis once they have completed their training. It’s not uncommon for people to work at the company for a long time: in Germany, for example, out of around 16,300 employees, over 10 percent have been at the company for more than 20 years.

One of the region’s largest IT employers

At Dachser’s head office in Kempten, 30 young people started their careers on September 1. As well as nine dual business administration students majoring in logistics, four freight forwarding and logistics specialists, and five office management specialists, twelve young people started training in corporate IT at Dachser in Kempten as apprentices or dual-study students. Among the seven students in IT, three come from the Game Engineering course at Kempten University of Applied Sciences for the first time. With 430 employees in Kempten, the logistics provider is one of the largest IT employers in the Allgäu region of Germany. Starting in 2020, Dachser IT will expand its range of training opportunities to include training for IT specialists in application development, IT specialists in systems integration and IT management assistants. More than 1,360 employees currently work at Dachser Head Office in Kempten. Over 730 Dachser employees worldwide are responsible for ensuring high-performance IT.

Focus on logistics operatives

Logistics operatives create at least half of Dachser’s value, which is why the family-owned company places a strong focus on this occupational group. “The logistics industry is struggling more and more to attract enough qualified workers,” says Simon. “It’s our duty to inspire people to work in this exciting industry, but also to retain them.” Dachser carried out an extensive project to develop a concept specifically aimed at logistics operatives. “First we held in-depth discussions with our colleagues in operational areas and asked them about their needs and expectations of us as an employer,” says Vera Weidemann, Head of Corporate Human Resources at Dachser. “The outcome is helping us to ensure that we attract the right employees, motivate them to stay with the company, and give them the appreciation they deserve.” Weidemann is therefore delighted that 335 apprentices have currently opted to pursue a career in operational roles at Dachser in Germany. They will train to work in warehouse logistics operatives, professional truck drivers, or warehouse clerks.

Hiring new drivers

Dachser is also working hard to attract new truck drivers. Although Dachser employs only a very small number of its own drivers, its subsidiary Dachser Service und Ausbildungs GmbH trains and develops truck drivers in collaboration with independent subcontractors, and supports them on their journey to becoming self-employed. As a new training year starts, 112 prospective drivers are starting out across Germany, where Dachser is training 251 professional drivers in total.

Dachser is building in Neumünster

(l-r)  Jan-Ferdinand Lühmann, Operations Manager European Logistics Dachser Neumünster; Paul Bartram, Bartram Bau-Systeme; Alexander Tonn, Managing Director European Logistics Germany bei Dachser and Dr, Olaf Tauras, Mayor of Neumünster.

Neumünster/Kempten, August 7, 2019. The logistics provider Dachser is starting the construction of a new branch in Neumünster in the far north of Germany. Dachser is building a transit terminal for industrial goods and food at Isarstrasse on the industrial estate south of Neumünster. This investment is worth some EUR 17.4 million. Construction is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2020. Around 30 employees will work in the new logistics center.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on the grounds at Isarstrasse and attended by Dr. Olaf Tauras, Mayor of Neumünster, and Alexander Tonn, Managing Director European Logistics Germany, on August 7, 2019. Tonn is responsible for the German branches of the European Logistics business line (overland transport and contract logistics for industrial goods).

Construction work on the 57,000-square-meter plot of land will start at the beginning of September. The total area of the terminal is 6,700 square meters. Of this floor space, 5,000 square meters will handle industrial goods, with the remaining 1,700 square meters cooled and devoted to food transit. The facility will have 76 docking bays for the loading and unloading of trucks. An office building of 1,000 square meters will complement the terminal.

“Neumünster will become another key terminal for Dachser in the far north of Germany. This new location will connect directly into our extensive European overland transport network,” Tonn says, adding that “the new construction complies with the latest standards and offers secure and sustainable jobs in logistics within the region.”

Dachser’s new terminal in Neumünster will replace its long-standing partner, 17111 Transit Transport & Logistik. In the future, this site will serve almost the whole of Schleswig-Holstein, but for now the collaboration will continue until the Dachser branch has been completed. The new location has good transport connections, situated directly on the B205 highway with direct access to the A7 highway.

Continued Growth Prompts Investment for Dachser UK

18th June, 2019:

2018 was a progressive year for Dachser UK with the appointment of a new UK Managing Director, Mark Rollinson, combined with the expansion of its operations and the opening of a second logistics centre in Northampton.  This confidence was based on a strong financial performance with UK sales turnover increasing by 9% to £84.1 million.  This is the result of increased export business and healthy growth in contract logistics services, the latter seeing a number of new customer contracts secured.

Investment for the future remains the theme this year as construction of a new 5,175 square metre logistics centre in Rochdale remains on track to open in September.  The development of the 3.7 hectare (9.2 acre) site represents a EUR 16 million (GBP 14.4 million) investment by the company.

Commenting on the company’s progression during 2018 and recent months, MD Mark Rollinson said, “Our significant investment is proof of Dachser’s commitment to the UK market and our optimistic view on the future import and export trade with the rest of Europe, which is evidenced by our strong growth figures last year. We will continue to leverage our pan-European road freight services and given the continued uncertainties surrounding Brexit, we will remain agile and responsive to our customers’ needs in light of possible changes to their European supply chains.”

The new Rochdale Logistics Centre will be connected to Dachser’s comprehensive branch network through daily direct freight services, providing extensive domestic and European distribution and warehousing services. In addition, Dachser’s established ‘Interlocking’ programme ensures further development of air freight, sea freight and international supply chain management services.

Bolstering the expansion of Dachser’s operations in the North of the country is the appointment of a new Sales Manager for the region, Marion Simpson. Since joining Dachser in a business development role in 2013, Marion has contributed significantly to the success and growth of the Rochdale branch.  Marion will also continue in her role as a Chem-Logistics specialist, Dachser’s network-wide corporate solution servicing the chemical industry.

Explaining the potential of her new role in facilitating customer access to these services, Marion Simpson commented, “With a new facility on the horizon and an exceptionally dedicated andenthusiastic team, I am very excited about the future of Dachser in the UK.  Dachser’s global supply chain management and strong reputation for professionalism, reliability and high quality service will support importers and exporters in the region to maintain their economic growth.”

Johnston Logistics to become Dachser Ireland

Rebranding will take effect in September

Kempten and Munich, Germany, June 4, 2019. Two years ago, Dachser acquired a majority share in Irish logistics company Johnston Logistics Ltd. The process of fully integrating it into the Dachser network is now nearing completion with the rebranding and associated name change to Dachser Ireland Ltd. Dachser made the official announcement today at the transport logistic trade fair in Munich.

Dachser and Johnston Logistics have been partners since 2007. In 2017, Dachser acquired a majority stake in the company, one of the most important logistics providers in the Irish market. Since then, the two companies have gradually become increasingly integrated. In September, Johnston Logistics Ltd. will change its name to Dachser Ireland Ltd. “The rebranding makes the full integration of Johnston Logistics into the Dachser network visible to the outside world. At the same time, the connection to all our systems ensures that the Irish country organization is secure and stable for the future,” explains Dachser CEO Bernhard Simon.

Operational integration complete

Dachser’s yellow and blue trucks are already on the road in Ireland. Operational integration, including the migration to DOMINO and MIKADO, Dachser’s proprietary IT systems for transport and warehouse management, took place back in February. Michael Schilling, COO Road Logistics at Dachser, says: “The integration of an experienced and capable partner such as Johnston Logistics is absolutely in line with one of Dachser’s main interests: we want our customers in Ireland to get the maximum benefit from uniform services and quality standards, fixed transit times, and the closely integrated network of Dachser branches throughout Europe.”

Albert Johnston, Managing Director of Johnston Logistics and soon of Dachser Ireland, adds: “With the integration into the Dachser network, we have found a good, sustainable path for future developments. Both family businesses stand for the same values. And both sides contribute expertise that will ensure further growth—in both our domestic and our export business.”

Johnston Logistics was founded in 1979. In addition to its headquarters in Rathcoole near Dublin, it has locations in Cork in the south and in Limerick on the west coast of Ireland. Its warehousing facilities offer 20,000 pallet spaces. In 2018, the company transported about 346,000 shipments with 120 daily departures. In addition to groupage, Johnston Logistics specializes in dangerous goods transportation and warehousing services for customers in the chemical, pharmaceutical, hardware, plastics and packaging industries. The company currently has direct 175 employees.
